Echoes of the Past, Waters of Rejuvenation

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of historical exploration and soothing relaxation. I ventured into the heart of Matsuyama, eager to uncover the stories etched into its ancient castle and to immerse myself in the legendary waters of Dogo Onsen. It was a day that reminded me why I love to travel solo – the freedom to explore at my own pace and to fully absorb the essence of a place.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Inonakanokawazu. Fuelled up, I made my way to Matsuyama Castle. The journey to the top of Mount Katsuyama, where the castle proudly stands, was an adventure in itself. I decided to take the ropeway, which offered stunning panoramic views of Matsuyama and the Seto Inland Sea. As the city unfolded beneath me, I couldn't help but reflect on the blend of modern life and ancient history that defines Japan. The ropeway was a unique experience, and I made a mental note to tell Aminata and Ibrahim about it; they would have loved the sensation of floating above the trees.

Emerging at the summit, I was immediately struck by the imposing presence of Matsuyama Castle. This is one of Japan's twelve original castles, having survived the post-feudal era intact. Built in the early 17th century, the castle has witnessed centuries of history, from feudal lords to the Meiji Restoration.

Exploring the castle grounds, I was impressed by the intricate defensive structures and the well-preserved main keep. The castle's history is rich and complex. Originally built by Kato Yoshiaki in 1603, the castle saw several changes in leadership and was even struck by lightning in 1784, leading to the construction of the current three-story keep in 1820. Walking through the main circle of defense, the Honmaru, I imagined what life must have been like for the soldiers and lords who once resided within these walls.

The views from the top were breathtaking, offering a complete panorama of Matsuyama. I spent a good hour simply soaking in the scenery, letting my mind wander back to the tales of samurai and feudal lords. The ascent to the castle was well worth the effort, providing not only a physical workout but also a deep dive into Japanese history. Before leaving, I took a moment to appreciate the Climbing Stone Wall, which connects the Ninomaru to the Honmaru; it's a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the castle's builders.

For lunch, I headed to Eki-mae Shokudo, a local eatery near the station. I savored a traditional Japanese meal, which gave me a taste of local flavors. It was simple, delicious, and exactly what I needed to recharge for the afternoon's adventures.

In the afternoon, I ventured to Dogo Onsen Main Building, one of Japan's oldest and most celebrated hot springs. The building itself is a sight to behold, a three-story wooden structure that exudes history and charm. Dogo Onsen boasts a history stretching back 3,000 years and is even mentioned in ancient texts and legends.

Before entering, I took a moment to admire the architecture. The Dogo Onsen Main Building was constructed in 1894 and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Inside, the atmosphere was magical. The scent of the hot spring water filled the air, and the sound of gentle chatter created a soothing ambiance. I opted for a traditional bathing experience, immersing myself in the warm, mineral-rich waters. It was incredibly relaxing, easing the aches from my morning trek around the castle.

The waters of Dogo Onsen are known for their therapeutic properties, said to be beneficial for everything from rheumatism to skin disorders. Whether that's true or not, I certainly felt rejuvenated after my soak. As I relaxed, I reflected on the history of this place. It is said that Prince Shotoku himself visited these springs in ancient times. It is also rumored that the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's animated film 'Spirited Away' was inspired by Dogo Onsen.

Emerging from the onsen, I felt like a new man. I strolled through Dogo Haikara Street, the main shopping street in the hot spring town. It was lined with souvenir shops and cafes, bustling with tourists and locals alike. I picked up a few small gifts for Fatoumata and the kids, tokens to remind them of my adventure.

As evening approached, I found myself at the Irish Pub Amontillado. It felt a little out of place in Japan but I was curious. The pub offered a wide selection of beers and cocktails, and I decided to try a local craft beer. It was a pleasant way to unwind and reflect on the day. While enjoying my drink, I thought about tomorrow's itinerary. I am looking forward to visiting the Otsuka Museum of Art and taking the Bizan Ropeway in Tokushima.

For dinner, I chose Dining Room Hibari, a local restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and relaxation. The flavors of the meal lingered as I walked back to my accommodation, the sounds of the city fading into a peaceful hum.
