Kochi's Charms: A Day of Markets, Views, and Flavors

Today was a day of embracing the local culture and natural beauty of Kochi. From the bustling Kochi Sunday Market to the stunning views at Kurushima Strait Observatory, and the delightful culinary experiences in between, it was a day that truly immersed me in the heart of Shikoku. These are the days I travel for, the ones that make me feel alive and connected to the world around me.

My day began with an early start to visit the famed Kochi Sunday Market. I remember similar markets from my childhood in Goundam, though perhaps not quite as extensive! The market stretches for over a kilometer, starting near the Kochi Castle. The energy was infectious, with vendors selling everything from fresh produce to local crafts.

I had a delightful breakfast at Kohanyu, a charming spot known for its serene ambiance. The Asian-style breakfast was a perfect start to the day, fueling me for the adventures ahead. The hotel is located near the Monobe River, offering beautiful views. As someone who appreciates a connection to nature, I found the setting incredibly peaceful. It reminded me of mornings back home in Montreal, though the cuisine was decidedly different.

Navigating the market was an experience in itself. There were hundreds of stalls, each offering something unique. I sampled some *inaka-sushi*, a local style of sushi made with preserved vegetables. The flavors were new to me, a delightful mix of savory and tangy. I also couldn't resist trying *aisukurin*, a local version of sorbet. It was the perfect treat on a warm day.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you never thought to ask.

After immersing myself in the market's vibrant atmosphere, I made my way to the Kurushima Strait Observatory. The journey itself was scenic, offering glimpses of the Shikoku countryside. The observatory provides a panoramic view of the Kurushima Strait and its impressive suspension bridge.

I spent a good hour at the observatory, simply taking in the view. The turbulent waters of the Seto Inland Sea, the islands dotting the horizon, and the engineering marvel of the bridge created a stunning vista. I could see why this spot is so highly recommended. It was a perfect opportunity to reflect on my journey so far and appreciate the natural beauty of Shikoku.

For lunch, I chose Yuzuan Restaurant, known for its quirky decor and delicious Kochi-style cuisine. The restaurant is filled with interesting objects, including statues of local heroes and even a Cat Bus from the Ghibli movie *My Neighbor Totoro*. It was an eclectic mix that added to the charm of the place.

I opted for their signature *omuraisu*, a Japanese-style omelet filled with rice and covered in demi-glace sauce. It was a comforting and flavorful dish, a perfect example of Japanese comfort food. I also had to try the *katsuo no tataki* (seared tuna), a local specialty. The tuna was perfectly seared, with a delicate smoky flavor that I absolutely loved. The restaurant even has a katsuo sundae, but I was not brave enough to try it.

In the evening, I decided to try some local *katsuo no tataki* at Tataki Kobo. This restaurant is known for searing the bonito with straw, which they say gives it a unique flavor.

The preparation of the *tataki* was a spectacle in itself. The chefs use fresh bonito and sear it over a hot straw fire. The flames leaped high, creating a dramatic display as the fish was cooked to perfection. The straw imparted a smoky flavor to the *tataki*, which was unlike anything I’ve tasted before. It was served with a variety of local sauces and condiments, allowing me to customize each bite to my liking. I must admit, the straw-seared method made a big difference. It was a culinary experience I won't soon forget.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out Bar Salvador. This cozy bar is known for its inviting atmosphere and local vibe. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. I enjoyed a refreshing cocktail, chatted with some locals, and soaked in the ambiance. The bar had a great selection of drinks, including some signature cocktails that incorporated local flavors. It was a great way to end the day, experiencing Kochi's nightlife and connecting with the community.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore Shikoku. The blend of cultural experiences, natural beauty, and culinary delights has been truly enriching. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Dainichi Temple and Shoryuji Temple, continuing my exploration of Shikoku's cultural heritage. I'm also looking forward to visiting Island Mishima, a local shop that I hope will offer some unique souvenirs. For breakfast, I'm planning on trying Osusowake Shokudo Mado, and for lunch, Eki-mae Shokudo. Dinner will be at Dining Room Hibari. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Until then, *bonne nuit* from Kochi!

It's funny how travel can sometimes bring you closer to yourself. Being alone here, exploring these new places, it reminds me of why I started traveling in the first place – to learn, to grow, and to connect with the world. Maybe I'll bring Fatoumata and the kids here next time. I think they'd really enjoy it.
