Whispers of the Past in Iya Valley

Today marked another incredible chapter in my solo exploration of Shikoku Island. I ventured deep into the heart of Iya Valley, a region steeped in history and folklore. From encountering mischievous Yokai to delving into the tales of the Heike clan, it was a day filled with cultural immersion and breathtaking scenery. The mountains seemed to whisper stories of ancient times, and I felt a profound connection to the island's rich heritage.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Munagin in Nankoku. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Munagin seems to be popular for their eel dishes. I made a mental note to try that next time I am in the area.

With a full stomach, I set off towards the Yokai House, located at the Oboke Roadside Station. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through narrow mountain roads with stunning views of the Iya Valley. As I approached the roadside station, I was greeted by peculiar sculptures of dragons and other mythical creatures. It was clear that I was entering a realm where folklore and fantasy intertwined.

The Yokai House is dedicated to the Yokai, which are legendary monsters and spirits in Japanese folklore. As someone fascinated by different cultures, I was intrigued to learn more about these supernatural beings. The museum showcased a variety of Yokai characters, each with its own unique story and powers. Though I wasn’t familiar with many of the characters, the exhibits were well-explained, and I enjoyed immersing myself in this whimsical world. It's fascinating how these stories have been passed down through generations, shaping the cultural identity of the region. I even picked up a small Konaki-Jiji figurine, one of the most famous Yokai from Oboke, as a souvenir.

Leaving the Yokai House, I continued my journey to the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore. This museum is located in a traditional thatched-roof house that once belonged to the descendants of Horikawa Naiki, a doctor who served the young Emperor Antoku after the downfall of the Heike clan. The Heike clan was once a powerful ruling family who fled into these mountains to escape their enemies.

Walking through the Heike Yashiki was like stepping back in time. The house, built in 1867, is beautifully preserved and filled with antiques and relics that offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who lived here centuries ago. I was particularly fascinated by the armor, flags, and ancient documents on display. Wandering through the rooms, I could almost hear the echoes of the past, imagining the Heike warriors seeking refuge in this remote valley. The museum also boasts an 800 year old tree in its garden.

After immersing myself in history, it was time for lunch. I stopped at Restaurant&Cafe Riina in Shikokuchuo. This charming cafe is known for its delicious and healthy dishes, with an Italian and French influence. I savored a delightful pasta dish made with locally sourced vegetables. The fresh flavors were a testament to the region's rich agricultural heritage. It reminded me a bit of the meals Fatoumata prepares back home, always emphasizing fresh, local ingredients. The cafe had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff, who shared some local insights and recommendations.

My final stop for the day was the Mountain bookshop. While I enjoy reading, I didn't find the shop to be particularly interesting. I decided to instead take a walk and enjoy the scenery.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Amekaze Shokudo for dinner. This restaurant is located amidst picturesque rice fields, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Amekaze Shokudo is a charming restaurant located in Nankoku, Kochi. The restaurant has a library inside, with a wide array of genres. I enjoyed a flavorful curry dish while watching the sunset over the rice paddies. The peaceful ambiance and delicious food made for a perfect ending to a day of exploration.

Reflecting on my experiences today, I am struck by the unique blend of history, folklore, and natural beauty that defines Iya Valley. It's a place where ancient traditions are still alive, and where the past and present seamlessly intertwine. I am grateful for the opportunity to have immersed myself in this captivating region, and I look forward to discovering more hidden gems in Shikoku.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Kochi Sunday Market, and the Kurushima Strait Observatory. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me!

The evening is drawing to a close, and I find myself eager to see what tomorrow holds.
