Day 10: A Day of Vermilion and Serenity: Exploring Kyoto's Spiritual Heart
Discover the vibrant Fushimi Inari Shrine & serene Tōji Temple, indulging in Kyoto's culinary delights and captivating bar scene.
Whispers of the Past
Today was a journey through the heart of Kyoto, a day filled with vibrant colors, ancient whispers, and the quiet serenity that only centuries of history can provide. It was a day of contrasts, from the bustling pathways of a thousand torii gates to the hushed halls of a temple guarding ancient secrets. It's remarkable how a single day can encapsulate so much of a city's spirit.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Nakamura. The traditional Japanese breakfast was exactly what I needed to prepare for a day of exploration. The delicate flavors and artful presentation were a perfect start to a day steeped in culture.
Fueled and ready, I set off to Fushimi Inari Shrine. I had read so much about the seemingly endless path of vermilion torii gates snaking up the mountainside, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. As I approached the entrance, the sheer scale of the shrine was breathtaking. Thousands of vibrant gates stood in silent formation, each one a testament to the enduring faith of generations.

The climb was invigorating, both physically and spiritually. The air was crisp and cool, carrying the scent of pine and the faint echoes of ancient prayers. Sunlight filtered through the gaps between the gates, casting dancing shadows on the path ahead. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to absorb the profound sense of peace that permeated the air. I found myself reflecting on my own life, my journey, and the path that lay ahead. It was a meditative experience, a chance to connect with something larger than myself.
I was also reflecting on Hans, and how much he would have loved this place. He always appreciated the craftsmanship and the spiritual significance of places like this. I made a mental note to bring him here someday. Sophie, too, would have been captivated by the vibrant colors and the sense of mystery. Perhaps a family trip next time?
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and shrines, but in the way it invites you to reflect on your own journey through life.
After descending from Fushimi Inari, I made my way to Tōji Temple, a stark contrast to the vibrant energy of the shrine. Here, the atmosphere was one of quiet contemplation. The temple's towering five-story pagoda, the tallest wooden structure in Japan, dominated the skyline, a testament to the enduring power of faith and architectural ingenuity. I wandered through the temple grounds, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and the serene beauty of the gardens. The pagoda was especially impressive, and I learned that during special openings, visitors are allowed to enter the first story, something I sadly missed today.

Inside the temple, I was struck by the sense of history that permeated every corner. Ancient statues and artifacts whispered stories of emperors and monks, of wars and peace, of the ebb and flow of time. I felt a deep connection to the past, a sense of being part of a long and unbroken chain of human experience. It was a humbling and awe-inspiring feeling.
For lunch, I had made a reservation at Nishikawa, a Kaiseki restaurant. The meal was an exquisite journey through the seasons, a symphony of flavors and textures that delighted my senses. Each dish was a work of art, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. The presentation was as important as the taste, with delicate arrangements of seasonal ingredients that evoked the beauty of the natural world. The service was impeccable, attentive without being intrusive. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

As the afternoon waned, I found myself drawn to the Kyoto Star Bar. I'd heard whispers of its legendary cocktails and sophisticated atmosphere, and I was eager to experience it for myself. Stepping inside was like entering another world, a dimly lit sanctuary of polished wood and gleaming glassware. The bartender, a kimono clad master of his craft, greeted me with a warm smile and a knowing nod. I ordered a Ki No Bi Negroni, a concoction that was as beautiful to look at as it was delicious to drink. The combination of flavors was complex and intriguing, a perfect blend of tradition and innovation.

I savored each sip, enjoying the quiet hum of conversation and the gentle clinking of glasses. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, a chance to relax and reflect on all that I had seen and experienced. I even struck up a conversation with a local who recommended a small, family-run restaurant for dinner, Yoshikawa. According to him, it was famous for its tempura, so I decided to give it a try.

Yoshikawa turned out to be a hidden gem. The tempura was light and crispy, the ingredients fresh and flavorful. I sat at the counter, watching the chef work his magic, transforming simple ingredients into culinary masterpieces. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and I felt like I was part of a family, sharing a meal with old friends. I decided to try the sake as well, and it paired perfectly with the tempura. I felt so relaxed and content.
As I walked back to my hotel, the Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Kyoto Premier, the city was bathed in the soft glow of twilight. The Kamo River flowed gently beside me, its waters reflecting the twinkling lights of the city. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this magical place, to immerse myself in its history and culture, and to connect with its people. It was a day that I would cherish forever.

Tomorrow, I'm planning a day trip to Osaka. I've heard so much about Osaka Castle, and I'm eager to explore this iconic landmark. I'm also looking forward to trying some of Osaka's famous street food, especially the okonomiyaki. I've made a reservation for lunch at Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha. I will be having breakfast at Sakuragawa, and dinner at The Cellar Kyoto. I'm also planning to do some shopping at Takashimaya Kyoto S.C. and enjoy a drink at Bar Cordon Noir. It sounds like another exciting day awaits!
As I prepare for my final day in Japan, I realize how much this solo journey has meant to me. It has been a time for reflection, for personal growth, and for connecting with a culture that is both ancient and vibrant. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the beauty and serenity of Kyoto, and I look forward to sharing my adventures with Hans and Sophie when I return home.
I'm also grateful for the small reminders of home. The silver pendant necklace I wear is a constant reminder of my travels, and it brings me comfort to know that I am always connected to the people I love. I am also grateful for the small birthmark just below my left ear, shaped like a crescent moon, a unique and easily recognizable feature that makes me feel like I am always carrying a piece of myself with me.
I am also grateful for the fact that I was able to improve my Japanese skills during this trip. While I still have a long way to go, I am proud of the progress I have made. It has been a rewarding experience to be able to communicate with the locals and to learn more about their culture. I am looking forward to continuing to improve my Japanese skills when I return home.
As I drift off to sleep, I am filled with a sense of peace and contentment. I am grateful for all that I have experienced in Kyoto, and I am excited for what the future holds.
