A Final Bow to Kyoto

As my enchanting solo journey through Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the profound experiences and serene moments that have filled my days. Today marked not just the end of my stay, but a transition from the tranquil gardens and historic temples of Kyoto to the vibrant energy of Osaka. With a heart full of memories and a camera roll bursting with images, I embarked on a day of exploration, delicious food, and a final toast to this captivating city.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Sakuragawa. I savored a traditional Japanese breakfast, the flavors both comforting and invigorating. The delicate balance of savory and umami notes set the perfect tone for my last day in Kyoto. I made a mental note to try to recreate some of these dishes back home in Sarnen, perhaps with a Swiss twist.

With a satisfied stomach and a spring in my step, I set out for Osaka. The train journey itself was an experience, watching the landscape transform from the serene outskirts of Kyoto to the bustling cityscape of Osaka. My destination: the iconic Osaka Castle. As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I was eager to explore this landmark, a testament to Japan's rich and turbulent past.

Stepping onto the grounds of Osaka Castle felt like stepping back in time. The castle's imposing structure, with its impressive stone walls and elegant architecture, stood as a symbol of power and resilience. I learned that Osaka Castle was originally built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, playing a crucial role in the unification of Japan during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The castle has been reconstructed multiple times throughout history, including a major reconstruction in 1931. The main keep, which houses a museum, is a concrete reproduction, including elevators, of the original and the interior is intended as a modern, functioning museum.

The stones of Osaka Castle whisper tales of battles fought, power gained, and history etched in every crevice.

Wandering through the castle grounds, I imagined the samurai warriors who once defended its walls, the political intrigues that unfolded within its halls, and the countless stories that have shaped its legacy. The castle's architecture exemplified the pinnacle of Japanese castle design during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The castle complex is built on two raised platforms of landfill supported by sheer walls of cut rock, a technique known as burdock piling. I spent hours exploring the castle museum, marveling at the exhibits showcasing artifacts from the Toyotomi and Tokugawa periods. The panoramic views from the top of the keep were breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of Osaka's modern skyline juxtaposed against the historical backdrop of the castle grounds.

After immersing myself in the history of Osaka Castle, my stomach began to rumble, reminding me that it was time for lunch. I ventured into the city in search of Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha, a restaurant known for its authentic Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. Finding the restaurant, tucked away in a narrow alley, felt like discovering a hidden gem. The aroma of sizzling okonomiyaki filled the air, whetting my appetite as I stepped inside.

I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff, who spoke fluent English, making me feel welcome and comfortable. I took a seat at the counter, where I could watch the chefs prepare the okonomiyaki with passion and skill. The okonomiyaki was delicious, with crispy edges and a soft center. The flavors were rich and balanced, a testament to the chef's expertise. I opted for the set meal which included an omelette and beef. It was one of the best meals I had in Japan. The staff were very welcoming and the meal was worth every yen.

With my belly full and my spirits high, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Takashimaya Kyoto S.C.. This department store offered a wide selection of goods, from traditional handicrafts to the latest trends in Japanese fashion. I was particularly drawn to the T8 floor, a specialty store zone featuring unique art, records, and fashion items. I picked up a few souvenirs for Hans and Sophie, wanting to bring a piece of Kyoto back to them.

As the day drew to a close, I sought out a cozy spot for a final drink in Kyoto. Bar Cordon Noir, a small bar located on the 3rd floor of an office building, proved to be the perfect choice. The atmosphere was intimate and inviting, with a friendly bartender who made me feel right at home. I savored a glass of Japanese whisky, reflecting on my incredible journey through Kyoto. The bartender called the elevator for me and wished me a lovely evening. It was the perfect way to end my last day in Kyoto.

For my final dinner, I chose The Cellar Kyoto, a restaurant known for its creative cuisine and fine wine. The restaurant was located just minutes away from Kyoto City Hall Station and offered a cozy atmosphere. The chef prepared seasonal ingredients with care, creating beautifully presented dishes that were as pleasing to the eye as they were to the palate. I paired my meal with a glass of wine selected by the sommelier, savoring the moment and cherishing the memories I had made in Kyoto. The Cellar Kyoto was a perfect place to reflect on the whole trip.

As I prepare to leave Kyoto tomorrow, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I have had, the people I have met, and the beauty I have witnessed. This solo journey has been a transformative experience, allowing me to connect with myself and the world around me in a profound way. I know that the memories of Kyoto will stay with me long after I return to Sarnen, inspiring me to continue exploring, learning, and growing. I am looking forward to seeing Hans and Sophie again, and sharing my experiences with them. Until next time, Kyoto, farewell, and thank you for the memories.

I am excited to be going home, but I will never forget my time in Kyoto. The memories I have made here will last a lifetime.
