Nathalie's Solo Cultural Exploration in Kyoto
Day 1: Glimmers of Gold and Whispers of Emperors: A Day of Historical Immersion in Kyoto
Step back in time exploring Kyoto's golden Kinkaku-ji and the serene Kyoto Imperial Palace, savoring exquisite cuisine along the way.
Kyoto's Golden Embrace
Today marked the beginning of my solo journey through Kyoto, and what a start it was! I immersed myself in the city's rich tapestry of history and culture. From the shimmering Kinkaku-ji to the serene Kyoto Imperial Palace, every moment felt like stepping back in time. The anticipation I had been feeling since leaving Sarnen was more than justified.
The day began with a delightful breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. Nestled in a quiet corner, the restaurant exuded a traditional charm that immediately put me at ease. The set meal featured an array of seasonal ingredients, each dish meticulously prepared and bursting with flavor. The Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option was a particular treat, allowing me to sample a variety of local delicacies like pumpkin, taro root, and hijiki seaweed. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. It reminded me a bit of the simple, hearty meals Hans prepares after a long day of woodworking, though with a distinctly Japanese flair.
My first stop was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As I approached, the sight of the temple shimmering in the morning sun took my breath away. The gold leaf exterior reflected the surrounding landscape, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. I walked through the meticulously manicured gardens, each step revealing a new angle of the pavilion's beauty. Though it was February, the weather was surprisingly mild, with a slight chill in the air that added to the serene atmosphere. I could almost imagine Sophie sketching the scene, capturing the interplay of light and shadow with her artistic eye. I took a moment to sit by the pond, listening to the gentle lapping of the water against the shore. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The temple was quite busy, even in the off-season, and I had to wait a few minutes to get to the front for a picture, but it was well worth it.

To see Kinkaku-ji is to witness a golden dream, a shimmering testament to Kyoto's enduring beauty and spiritual heart.
Next on the itinerary was the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The palace, once the residence of the Emperor of Japan, offered a fascinating glimpse into the country's imperial history. The vast complex was a stark contrast to the glittering Kinkaku-ji, with its understated elegance and sprawling gardens. I wandered through the various halls and courtyards, imagining the emperors and empresses who once walked these very grounds. The plum blossoms were just beginning to bloom, adding a touch of color to the otherwise muted landscape. I learned that a special spring opening would be held at the Kyoto Imperial Palace from February 26th to March 2nd, exhibiting paintings and other works for the first time. I felt a connection to the past, a sense of continuity that resonated deeply with my work as a librarian. It was as if the echoes of history were whispering through the corridors, sharing stories of power, tradition, and resilience. I thought of my husband, Hans, and how he would appreciate the craftsmanship and the dedication to preserving history, much like he does with his woodworking.

For lunch, I ventured to Hafuu, a restaurant renowned for its carefully selected meat dishes. The calm and modern Japanese interior created a warm and inviting atmosphere. I opted for the beef cutlet sandwich, a popular choice that lived up to its reputation. The meat was tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by the crispy breading. It was a delightful culinary experience, a testament to Kyoto's diverse gastronomic offerings. It was quite a change from the traditional Swiss dishes I often prepare at home, but I embraced the opportunity to try something new and exciting.

In the afternoon, I indulged in some retail therapy at the Kyoto Crafts Store. The store was a treasure trove of traditional Japanese crafts, from delicate ceramics to intricate textiles. I admired the skill and artistry that went into each piece, marveling at the dedication to preserving these ancient techniques. I ended up purchasing a small, hand-painted teacup as a memento of my trip. I could picture Sophie using it for her tea, a reminder of my adventures in Kyoto. It reminded me of the local craft shops in Sarnen, where Hans and I often browse for unique and handcrafted items.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Kikunoi Roan, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its exquisite Kaiseki cuisine. The multi-course meal was a culinary journey, each dish a work of art that showcased the season's finest ingredients. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. The attentive service and elegant ambiance added to the overall experience. It was a fitting end to a day of historical and cultural immersion, a celebration of Kyoto's rich heritage. The dessert was a particular highlight – caramel ice cream with buckwheat flour sponge cake. The dessert was a nice way to end the meal, and I felt nurtured by the food, hospitality and atmosphere of Kikunoi Roan.
