A Golden Start to a Kyoto Pilgrimage

My first day in Kyoto was nothing short of magical. After a long journey, the city welcomed me with open arms, and I couldn't wait to dive into its cultural heart. Today was all about exploring the serene beauty of Kyoto's famed temples and gardens, a perfect introduction to the city's spiritual side.

The day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. It's always a delight to find a place that caters so wonderfully to plant-based diets. I opted for their famous Heavenly Vegan Pancakes, and they truly lived up to the name. Fluffy, light, and utterly divine, they were the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. As someone who enjoys cooking, I always appreciate seeing how different cultures adapt and innovate vegan cuisine. Maximilian would have loved this place, he is always curious about vegan restaurants!

With a spring in my step and a camera in hand, I set off to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. The temple shimmered in the morning light, its reflection dancing on the surface of the pond. It was a sight that truly took my breath away. I remember reading about it in history books, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer beauty of seeing it in person. The intricate details, the way the gold leaf caught the sun – it was mesmerizing. I learned that Kinkaku-ji was originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397 and was later converted into a Zen Buddhist temple after his death. The temple has burned down a few times throughout history, including once in 1950 when it was set on fire by a fanatic monk. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955. Each floor has a different architectural style. It's a designated World Heritage Site since 1994. It was crowded, of course, but the energy of the place was palpable.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples, but in the peaceful moments of reflection they inspire.

Next on the itinerary was Ryoan-ji, famous for its enigmatic Zen garden. This was an experience of a different kind altogether. The garden is a rectangle of 248 square meters, consisting of fifteen stones of different sizes, carefully composed in five groups. The stones are surrounded by white gravel, which is carefully raked each day by the monks. The only vegetation in the garden is some moss around the stones. As I sat on the veranda, gazing at the meticulously arranged stones, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. It's said that no matter where you stand, you can never see all fifteen stones at once, which adds to the garden's mystique. I contemplated the meaning of the garden, its simplicity and complexity, and the way it invites introspection. The bareness of the garden, with its carefully raked gravel and strategically placed stones, felt like a metaphor for clearing the mind and finding clarity within.

Before heading to the next temple, I took a moment to explore the temple grounds, including a relatively spacious park area with a pond, dating back to the time when the site still served as an aristocrat's villa. I found a small shrine on one of its three little islands that can be accessed over a bridge.

My final temple visit for the day was Ninna-ji Temple, founded in AD 888 by Emperor Uda. This temple offered yet another unique perspective on Kyoto's rich history. Originally serving as a summer villa for the Imperial Family, known as Omuro Palace, the site was transformed into a temple complex of great importance. The temple was destroyed by fire and fighting in the Ōnin War in 1467, but it was rebuilt roughly 150 year later. From 888 to 1869 it was traditional for reigning Emperors to send a son to the temple to take over as head priest when a vacancy arose. The vast grounds and the five-story pagoda were impressive, but what struck me most was the sense of tranquility that permeated the air. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the emperors and priests who once walked these paths. I wandered through the gardens, admiring the traditional architecture and the serene atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of temple hopping.

Before dinner, I made a stop at Noren by Corazon, a charming shop known for its contemporary and beautifully designed souvenirs. I wanted to find something special to bring back home, a little piece of Kyoto to remind me of this incredible journey. I ended up buying a beautiful *noren* (Japanese fabric divider) with a delicate floral pattern. It felt like the perfect embodiment of Kyoto's blend of tradition and artistry. I thought it would be nice to get something for Amara, but I couldn't find anything that I thought she would like.

As evening approached, I was ready for a culinary experience. I had made a reservation at Kikunoi Roan, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant known for its exquisite Kaiseki cuisine. The restaurant was founded approximately 100 years ago and was named after the Zen saying “Meirekireki rododo (to be clear and transparent)”. From the moment I stepped inside, I knew I was in for something special. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the staff greeted me with warm hospitality. The Kaiseki dinner was a work of art, each course meticulously crafted with seasonal ingredients and presented with impeccable attention to detail. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a harmonious blend of textures and aromas. It was a true feast for the senses, and I savored every moment.

One of the highlights of the meal was the presentation. Each dish was like a miniature landscape, a testament to the chef's artistry and creativity. I remember one course in particular, a delicate arrangement of sashimi with edible flowers and intricate garnishes. It was almost too beautiful to eat, but of course, I couldn't resist. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. The experience was more than just a meal; it was a journey through the seasons, a celebration of Japanese culinary traditions. I chose the 10,000Y menu, since I wanted to experience the best that was on offer. I was seated at the counter, which meant an interactive kaiseki experience, with the chefs adding finishing touches to most of the dishes.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Arashiyama and its famed Bamboo Forest, along with the Tenryu-ji Temple. I'm also looking forward to trying Goichi Pizza for breakfast, Oryori Menami for lunch, and Gion Nanba for dinner. And perhaps a nightcap at L'Escamoteur, a bar I've heard great things about.

Before heading back to the Ace Hotel Kyoto, I took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Kyoto, soaking in the city's atmosphere. The air was crisp and cool, and the lanterns cast a warm glow on the traditional buildings. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect ending to a day filled with wonder and discovery. I felt a deep connection to this city, a sense of belonging that I hadn't expected. Kyoto had captured my heart, and I knew that this was just the beginning of an unforgettable journey.

As I reflect on my first day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and serenity of Kyoto. It's a city that nourishes the soul, a place where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern life. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, and I'm excited to share my adventures with you all. I am already looking forward to sharing my discoveries with Maximilian and Amara when I return to Heidelberg. Perhaps we can even try to recreate some of the dishes I've tasted here, bringing a little piece of Kyoto into our home.
