Whispers of Bamboo and Ancient Echoes

Today was a day of tranquil exploration in Arashiyama, a district on the outskirts of Kyoto known for its stunning natural beauty and historic temples. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of the Ace Hotel Kyoto, I ventured into a world where the whispers of bamboo mingle with the echoes of ancient prayers. Today was a journey for the soul, and I couldn't wait to share it with you all.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. It might seem odd to start a day of traditional Japanese sightseeing with pizza, but I'd read so many good things about this place, and I was craving something familiar. It was a small, cozy spot, and the pizza was indeed delicious, providing the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. I enjoyed the crispy, chewy crust and the flavorful toppings, a delightful change of pace before diving into the day's adventures.

With a satisfied stomach, I made my way to Arashiyama. The train ride itself was a treat, offering glimpses of the Kyoto countryside dusted with the last vestiges of winter. Arriving in Arashiyama, I was immediately struck by the serene atmosphere. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city, and the surrounding mountains provided a stunning backdrop.

First on my list was the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. As I stepped into the grove, I was immediately enveloped by the towering stalks of bamboo, their green hues a stark contrast to the pale winter sky. The forest was surprisingly quiet, save for the gentle rustling of the bamboo in the breeze. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, creating an ethereal, almost magical atmosphere. I wandered along the winding path, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. It was a truly immersive experience, and I found myself lost in the beauty of nature.

Emerging from the bamboo forest, I made my way to Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This Zen temple is renowned for its exquisite gardens, and I was eager to explore them. The Sogenchi Garden, designed by Muso Soseki, was a masterpiece of landscape architecture. A central pond reflected the surrounding mountains, creating a sense of depth and tranquility. I spent a good hour wandering through the gardens, admiring the carefully placed rocks, the meticulously manicured trees, and the serene beauty of the pond. Even in winter, the garden possessed a quiet charm, its stark simplicity accentuated by the season's muted colors.

Inside the main hall of Tenryu-ji, I was captivated by the large painting of a cloud dragon on the ceiling. The dragon's eyes were rendered in such a way that, no matter where I stood in the building, it seemed to be looking directly at me. This effect, known as happo-nirami, symbolizes the all-seeing eyes with which the dragon protects Buddhism. It was a truly impressive work of art, and I found myself marveling at the skill of the painter.

For lunch, I chose Oryori Menami, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. I wanted to experience the local flavors, and this place seemed like the perfect choice. The restaurant had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I opted for a set menu that included a variety of small dishes, each one a work of art in itself. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful simmered vegetables, every bite was a delight. It was a truly authentic culinary experience, and I left feeling satisfied and content.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to a drink at L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its creative cocktails and whimsical atmosphere. I had heard it described as stepping into another world, and I was curious to experience it for myself. The bar was indeed unique, with a quirky decor and a playful vibe. The bartender was a true mixologist, crafting inventive cocktails with flair and showmanship. I enjoyed a delicious concoction that was both visually stunning and incredibly tasty. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and reflection.

Before heading back to the hotel, I had dinner at Gion Nanba. Tucked away in a Kyoto-like alley near Yasaka Shrine, this Michelin Guide one-star kaiseki restaurant offers high-quality food and nihonshu in a calm and quiet atmosphere. The restaurant uses seasonal ingredients that change with the season, and each dish is known for being really delicious. The chef came out to greet me, which made the experience even more special.

As I write this, back in the comfort of my room at the Ace Hotel Kyoto, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Arashiyama is a truly special place, a sanctuary of natural beauty and ancient history. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, Tofuku-ji Temple and Sanjusangendo Temple, and I can't wait to see what wonders await me.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” This trip, each day, each moment, is a step further into a world of discovery, and I am so glad to be sharing it with you all. Goodnight from Kyoto!
