A Solo Cultural Journey Through Kyoto
Day 9: Golden Reflections and Zen Gardens: A Day of Kyoto's Spiritual Beauty
Discover Kyoto's serene temples and vibrant gardens, immersing yourself in the city's spiritual beauty and cultural richness.
Kyoto's Golden Embrace
Today was a day of exploring Kyoto's serene and spiritual side, a journey that took me through meticulously designed gardens, golden temples, and moments of quiet reflection. It's amazing how a single day can encapsulate so much of what makes Kyoto special. I was excited to delve deeper into the city's cultural and natural beauty.
My day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Hyoto Shijo Karasuma. I found the restaurant easily enough, and was ready for a delicious meal. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and I used Google Translate to communicate a few times. It was a perfect way to start the day, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead.

First on the itinerary was Daitoku-ji Temple, a sprawling Zen temple complex. Wandering through the grounds, I was struck by the sheer size and the sense of history that permeated the air. The free public grounds were beautiful, showcasing classic Japanese architecture. While the main buildings were impressive, the real treasures of Daitoku-ji are its sub-temples. Each sub-temple offers a unique perspective on Zen Buddhism and Japanese garden design. I chose to visit a few of the sub-temples, each requiring a separate admission fee. The rock gardens were particularly captivating, with their carefully placed stones and raked gravel creating miniature landscapes that invited contemplation. It was easy to lose myself in the peaceful atmosphere, a welcome escape from the bustling city.

Next, I made my way to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As I approached, the sight of the shimmering golden temple reflected in the surrounding pond was truly breathtaking. The temple, with its top two floors covered in gold leaf, stood in stark contrast to the winter landscape. It was a beautiful day, and the sun made the temple shine brilliantly. The crowds were considerable, but it didn't diminish the awe-inspiring effect of the Golden Pavilion. I walked along the designated path, taking in the views from different angles and trying to capture the perfect photograph. The gardens surrounding the temple were equally beautiful, with meticulously pruned trees and carefully placed stones creating a harmonious landscape. I can see why it’s one of the most visited sites in Kyoto. I even struck up a conversation with a few students from Fukuoka, learning about their hometown and sharing a few laughs.

For lunch, I had made a reservation at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION, eager to experience the world-renowned Kobe beef. The restaurant exuded an air of understated elegance, with a skilled chef preparing the meal right in front of me on a teppanyaki grill. I opted for a set menu that included a selection of appetizers, grilled vegetables, and, of course, the star of the show – Kobe beef. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, practically melting in my mouth. It was definitely a culinary highlight of my trip, a testament to the quality and craftsmanship that goes into producing Kobe beef. Maximilian would have loved this, he is such a steak connoisseur, I will have to bring him here someday.

After lunch, I decided to immerse myself in nature at the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Despite it being February, the gardens were still full of life and color. I spent a leisurely afternoon strolling through the various sections, admiring the diverse collection of plants from around the world. The conservatory was particularly impressive, housing a wide range of tropical and subtropical species. I enjoyed wandering through the flower beds, even though the cherry blossoms were not yet in full bloom. I learned that plum blossoms are visible from February through March, and I did see some of these cheerful flowers.

Before dinner, I stopped by Souvenir Kyoto to pick up a few mementos of my trip. The shop had a wide selection of traditional crafts, local snacks, and other souvenirs. I found a beautiful silk scarf for Amara, hoping she would like the vibrant colors, and a set of sake cups for Maximilian. I always enjoy bringing back a little piece of the places I visit to share with my family.

My day concluded with a dinner at Chihana, a renowned restaurant known for its exquisite Japanese cuisine. The restaurant had a serene and intimate atmosphere, with only a handful of tables and a counter overlooking the kitchen. I opted for the omakase menu, trusting the chef to create a culinary journey that showcased the best of seasonal ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef's attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the meal, from the carefully selected ingredients to the delicate balance of flavors. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a fitting end to a day of exploring Kyoto's cultural and natural treasures.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the incredible diversity of experiences that Kyoto has to offer. From the serenity of the Zen gardens to the opulence of the Golden Pavilion, from the culinary delights of Kobe beef to the natural beauty of the botanical gardens, Kyoto has something to captivate every traveler. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, my final day in this enchanting city. I plan to visit Kodaiji Temple, Maruyama Park, and Gion Corner, and perhaps enjoy a drink at the Turquoise Bar. I am soaking up every last moment of this solo journey, cherishing the memories I'm making in this beautiful and culturally rich city.
I’m also looking forward to seeing Maximilian and Amara soon, and I'm already planning how to incorporate some of the flavors and traditions I've experienced here into our life in Heidelberg. Perhaps a Sri Lankan curry with Japanese vegetables? The possibilities are endless!
