A Fond Farewell to Naoshima

As our time on Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the unique blend of art, architecture, and nature that defines this enchanting place. Today was about soaking in the last moments, revisiting favorite spots, and discovering hidden gems before we prepare to leave tomorrow. It’s hard to believe our 13-day adventure in Japan is nearing its end, but Naoshima has certainly left an indelible mark on our hearts.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Little Plum. This charming café-bar, housed in a renovated marine container, offered a cozy and open atmosphere. I opted for their homemade dry curry, while Maximilian enjoyed a hearty plate of eggs and toast. Amara, of course, chose the pancakes. The friendly service and delicious food made it a perfect start to our final day on the island. It's amazing to find such quality Mediterranean-style food in a back street restaurant on an island in Japan ! It felt like a little slice of home away from home, especially knowing they use fresh, local ingredients.

After breakfast, we decided to immerse ourselves in the serene ambiance of Naoshima Hall. Designed by Hiroshi Sambuichi, this building is more than just a community center; it’s a work of art that embodies the island's history and its connection to nature. As an architect, Maximilian was particularly fascinated by the building's nuanced design and its integration with the surrounding landscape. The roof, made from Japanese cypress, was especially impressive, blending traditional aesthetics with modern architectural techniques. Amara enjoyed exploring the moss garden and pond, while I appreciated the hall's open-plan space, designed to accommodate various activities, including bunraku puppetry.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to Benesse House Park. This part of the Benesse House complex offers a more relaxed and nature-integrated experience. Designed by Tadao Ando, the Park building is one of his rare wooden structures, which sets it apart from his usual concrete designs. We strolled through the lush greenery, admiring the outdoor art installations that seamlessly blend with the natural surroundings. The sea and sky provided a stunning backdrop, enhancing the beauty of the sculptures and site-specific works. Amara was thrilled to spot Yayoi Kusama's iconic Pumpkin sculpture, which has become a symbol of Naoshima. Maximilian and I enjoyed discussing the various art pieces, each uniquely inspired by the island's environment and architecture.

For lunch, we chose Chikurin, an Izakaya-style tavern. This cozy spot offered a taste of local cuisine, and we savored traditional Japanese dishes. I tried the local seafood, while Maximilian opted for a hearty meat dish. Amara enjoyed a kid-friendly bento box, complete with rice, vegetables, and small portions of fish and chicken. The friendly atmosphere and authentic flavors made it a memorable dining experience. It was a great way to connect with the local culture and enjoy a relaxing midday meal.

In the afternoon, I couldn't resist a bit of shopping at kokochi. This charming shop offers a delightful selection of local crafts, sweets, and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for friends back home and a special Naoshima-themed memento for Amara. It’s always nice to support local artisans and find unique treasures that capture the essence of a place. Plus, I couldn't resist trying one of their delicious cakes, made with locally sourced ingredients.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Luke's Table. Known for its exquisite pizza and grill dishes, this restaurant uses rich local ingredients to create culinary masterpieces. We started with a selection of appetizers, including fresh seafood and locally grown vegetables. For the main course, Maximilian and I shared a crispy thin-crust pizza, while Amara enjoyed a simple pasta dish. The melt-in-your-mouth desserts were the perfect ending to our meal, leaving us feeling completely satisfied. The modern interior and warm atmosphere made it a perfect setting for our farewell dinner.

Tomorrow, we will be heading back to the mainland, taking with us memories that will last a lifetime. While I am sad to leave this artistic haven, I am also excited to see what adventures await us in the next leg of our journey. I know that the spirit of Naoshima, with its harmonious blend of art, nature, and community, will stay with me always.

As we prepare to leave, I am reminded of the words of Tadao Ando, the architect behind many of Naoshima's iconic structures:

To create architecture is to create a world.

Naoshima has indeed created a world of its own, one that invites exploration, reflection, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. It’s a place where art comes alive, where nature inspires, and where community thrives. I am so grateful to have shared this experience with my family, and I look forward to carrying the lessons and memories of Naoshima with me on our future travels. Good bye for now, Naoshima. It's been a pleasure.

Looking ahead, our trip concludes as we head back home, filled with memories of Japan's art and beauty. It's been an incredible journey, and I can't wait to share more stories from our adventures soon.
