A Day of Artistic Pilgrimage on Teshima
Today was a day dedicated to Teshima, an island known for its serene landscapes and profound art experiences. Leaving the familiar shores of Naoshima, we embarked on a short ferry ride, eager to explore what this haven had to offer. Teshima promised a slower pace and a deeper connection with art and nature, and it certainly delivered.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. It's a quaint little spot that focuses on healthy and nutritious meals. I opted for the chickpea spicy curry set. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Amara loved the cranberry and coconut scones. The owner, a registered dietician, clearly puts a lot of thought into the ingredients, and it showed in the delicious, wholesome flavors.

After breakfast, we hopped on a bus headed towards the Teshima Art Museum. The journey itself was part of the experience, winding through verdant rice paddies and past traditional Japanese houses. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the bustling cities we had previously visited. I couldn't help but think of my hometown in Sri Lanka, Gampola, with its own lush landscapes and tranquil atmosphere. It’s amazing how these seemingly disparate places can evoke similar feelings of peace and connection.

The Teshima Art Museum is an architectural marvel. Designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito, the museum is shaped like a water droplet about to hit the ground. The concrete structure blends seamlessly into the landscape, creating a sense of harmony between art and nature. As we approached, I felt a sense of anticipation building, a feeling that this was going to be more than just a museum visit.
Stepping inside the Teshima Art Museum was like entering another world. The space is minimalist, with two large oval openings in the ceiling that allow natural light, sounds, and breezes to filter in. The main exhibit, 'Matrix' by Rei Naito, consists of water droplets that emerge from tiny holes in the floor, moving and merging across the concrete surface. It's a mesmerizing display of simplicity and beauty, inviting contemplation and introspection. Maximilian, with his architect's eye, was fascinated by the structure's engineering, while Amara was captivated by the dancing water droplets. I found myself lost in the moment, feeling a sense of calm wash over me. It was a truly unique and inspiring experience.
The Teshima Art Museum is not just about the building and the artwork within it; it guides visitors through a unique experience of nature, which should be treasured and respected by humankind.
After spending a good hour at the museum, we decided to have lunch at Ebisukamo. This cozy restaurant is known for its incredible food and friendly staff. We tried a variety of dishes, including their famous seafood, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. Maximilian particularly enjoyed the local sake selection, while Amara was thrilled with her perfectly cooked udon noodles. The owner even went above and beyond by running to the bus station to return a phone that someone had forgotten. It's these small acts of kindness that truly make a place memorable.

Our next stop was the Teshima 8 Million Lab. This unique art installation, conceived by artist Sputniko!, explores the concept of 'Yaoyorozu,' which means '8 million' in Japanese and refers to the belief that gods exist in everything. The lab features interactive exhibits that blend science and mythology, creating a thought-provoking experience. Amara was particularly intrigued by the displays, asking endless questions about the intersection of art and science. It was wonderful to see her curiosity sparked in such a creative way.

Before heading to dinner, we stopped by Cafe Salon Nakaoku for a quick drink. This charming cafe is located in a traditional Japanese building, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. We sipped on refreshing iced teas while enjoying the tranquil surroundings. The cafe is known for its curry omelet rice. It's the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to the port, feeling grateful for the experiences Teshima had offered. The island’s blend of art, nature, and tranquility had left a lasting impression on all of us. It was a day of discovery, connection, and inspiration, a reminder of the power of art to transform and uplift.
Tomorrow, we'll be heading back to Naoshima to explore Naoshima Hall and Benesse House Park. I'm particularly excited to visit Benesse House Park , which I hear is an amazing outdoor sculpture park. I'm also looking forward to trying Little Plum for breakfast. I've heard they have great coffee and a relaxed atmosphere. It's hard to believe that our trip is almost over, but I'm determined to make the most of our last few days in this artistic paradise.
Reflecting on today, I’m reminded of something my grandmother used to say:
“To truly see, you must first be still.”
Teshima taught me the importance of slowing down, of appreciating the simple moments, and of finding beauty in the unexpected. It was a day that nourished my soul and renewed my spirit, a reminder of the transformative power of art and nature.
The Setouchi Triennale is held every three years on a dozen islands in the Seto Inland Sea, and aims to revitalize the region through contemporary art and tourism. I’m already looking forward to the next one. Perhaps we’ll plan our visit around the Teshima Island Birthday Party , and celebrate with the locals! Until then, I’ll cherish the memories of this tranquil island and the lessons it taught me. We even forgot our umbrella for unexpected rain and a sketchbook for art inspiration. I guess there's always something to remember for next time! I’m so glad we decided to come during the spring session. The weather has been perfect, and the art has been truly inspiring.
