Whispers of Water and Stone

Today was a symphony of natural beauty and quaint village life. Leaving behind the familiar paths, I ventured deeper into the heart of Mount Pelion, seeking out hidden gems and stories etched in stone. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and fallen leaves, a reminder that even in this idyllic setting, autumn was gently laying its claim. I was eager to discover the secrets that Katarráktes Kissou and Makrinitsa held, ready to be enchanted by their unique allure.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at cardamo OINOMAGEIREIO. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air, a comforting embrace against the cool morning. I savored every bite, knowing I needed the energy for the adventures that lay ahead. After all, chasing waterfalls is no easy feat! I opted for a traditional Greek breakfast, complete with local honey and yogurt, a delicious start to a day steeped in Pelion's natural beauty.

With renewed vigor, I set off towards Katarráktes Kissou. The drive itself was a scenic masterpiece, winding roads carving through forests painted in hues of gold and crimson. As I approached Kissos, the sound of rushing water grew louder, a tantalizing prelude to the cascade I was about to witness. Parking the car, I followed a narrow path that led me deeper into the woods. The air grew cooler, the sunlight dappled as it filtered through the dense canopy. And then, there it was – a breathtaking waterfall cascading down moss-covered rocks, its water crystal clear and inviting. I spent what felt like hours simply mesmerized by the sight, the sound of the water a soothing balm to my soul.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet whispers of nature.

After soaking in the tranquility of Katarráktes Kissou, I made my way to Makrinitsa, a village perched high on the mountainside, offering panoramic views of Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf. The village is known as the Balcony of Pelion, and as I ascended the winding roads, I understood why. The views were simply stunning, a tapestry of blue sea and terracotta rooftops stretching as far as the eye could see. I parked near the central square and began to explore the village on foot. The cobblestone streets were narrow and winding, lined with traditional stone houses adorned with colorful flowers. Every corner seemed to reveal a new vista, a new photo opportunity.

The central square of Makrinitsa was bustling with activity. Locals and tourists alike gathered to enjoy the views, sip coffee at the cafes, and browse the local shops. I found a charming taverna called To Katofli tis Ketis for lunch, drawn in by the promise of authentic Pelion cuisine. I indulged in a plate of *spetzofai*, a hearty sausage stew that's a local specialty. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect complement to the crisp mountain air. While enjoying my meal, I couldn't help but marvel at the sense of community that permeated the village. People greeted each other with warm smiles and friendly banter, a testament to the enduring spirit of Greek hospitality.

After lunch, I took some time to simply wander through the village, soaking in the atmosphere. I visited the Church of Agia Triada, a beautiful Byzantine church with intricate frescoes and a serene courtyard. I also stopped by a local shop to purchase some traditional Pelion crafts, a reminder of my time in this enchanting village. I was hoping to find some local events but it seemed like it was a quiet Saturday afternoon in Makrinitsa.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the Pagasetic Gulf, I made my way down to Chorefto, a coastal village where I planned to have dinner. The drive was breathtaking, the winding road offering stunning views of the coastline. By the time I arrived in Chorefto, the sky was ablaze with color, a fiery sunset painting the sea in hues of orange, pink, and purple.

I chose to dine at To Kima • Seaside Family Restaurant, drawn in by its idyllic location right on the beach. The sound of the waves lapping against the shore, combined with the delicious aroma of grilled seafood, created an irresistible ambiance. I ordered a plate of grilled octopus, a local delicacy, and savored every bite as I watched the stars begin to twinkle in the night sky. The octopus was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, a true testament to the restaurant's commitment to fresh, local ingredients.

After dinner, I decided to check out Minelska bar in Kala Nera, a short drive from Chorefto. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying drinks. I ordered a glass of *tsipouro*, a traditional Greek spirit, and joined in the conversation. I learned about the history of the region, the local customs, and the best places to visit. It was a wonderful way to end the day, connecting with the local community and gaining a deeper understanding of Pelion's rich culture.

As I drove back to my accommodation, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the cascading waterfalls of Kissos to the panoramic views of Makrinitsa and the coastal charm of Chorefto, it had been a day filled with beauty, discovery, and connection. Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Pelion's hidden gems, including the Bench with wonderful view and the Stream at Poros. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at Pelion Plaza Εστιατόριο - Πιτσαρία και Ενοικιαζόμενα Δωμάτια for breakfast, Dovas Home Cooking for lunch and Armonia Restaurant for dinner. I might even pop into Mediterraneo Art Store to pick up a souvenir.

This solo journey to Mount Pelion has been exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, immerse myself in a new culture, and discover the hidden beauty that lies within. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, why I love to explore, and why I love to share my experiences with all of you.

Goodnight from Pelion! The whispers of the wind and the distant sound of the waves are already lulling me to sleep, promising sweet dreams of tomorrow's adventures.
