Escape to the Highlands

Today was a day of escaping the city bustle and embracing the serene highlands surrounding Chiang Mai. It's amazing how a short drive can transport you to a completely different world, one filled with lush greenery, crisp mountain air, and the promise of relaxation. I was particularly excited to explore Mae Kampong Village and soak in the therapeutic waters of San Kamphaeng Hot Springs. It felt like a perfect way to recharge before diving back into the city's cultural sites tomorrow.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hummus Chiang Mai. I know, I know, Middle Eastern food in Thailand? But hear me out! After several days of indulging in the incredible local cuisine, I was craving something a little different. And let me tell you, this place did not disappoint! The hummus was incredibly creamy and flavorful, and the falafel was perfectly crispy. It was a delightful start to the day, and the friendly staff even offered a complimentary pink lemonade, a refreshing touch that I truly appreciated. I made a mental note to bring Hans and Aisha here when we return; they would absolutely love it.

Fuelled and ready, I set off for Mae Kampong Village. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through scenic mountain roads that offered breathtaking views. As I climbed higher, the air grew cooler and fresher, a welcome change from the city's humidity. The landscape transformed into a tapestry of green, with dense forests blanketing the hillsides. It was a feast for the eyes, and I couldn't resist stopping several times to capture the beauty with my camera.

Finally, I arrived at Mae Kampong, a charming village nestled in the mountains. It felt like stepping back in time, with its traditional wooden houses, quaint coffee shops, and a palpable sense of tranquility. Unlike the sweeping rice paddies often associated with Thailand, Mae Kampong is enveloped in a canopy of green, with misty mornings and crisp mountain air. I decided to simply wander through the village, soaking in the atmosphere and observing the local way of life. I passed by tea plantations, where locals were diligently harvesting the leaves, and small shops selling handmade crafts and local produce. The village is known for its community-run homestays, and I could see why so many people choose to stay here, immersing themselves in the authentic Thai culture and hospitality.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand expeditions, but in the quiet corners of the world, where the simple rhythms of life offer a profound sense of peace.

One of the highlights of Mae Kampong was the Mae Kampong Waterfall. After a short hike through the forest, I reached the cascading waters, which plunged into a refreshing pool below. The sound of the waterfall was incredibly soothing, and I spent some time simply sitting by the water, enjoying the tranquility and the cool spray on my face. It was the perfect spot to reconnect with nature and escape the stresses of everyday life. I could imagine Aisha would have loved splashing around in the shallow pools, her laughter echoing through the trees.

For lunch, I stopped at Jen Moy, a local Thai restaurant that came highly recommended. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting ambiance, and the aroma of traditional Thai dishes filled the air. I decided to try their signature Pad Thai and Green Curry, both of which were bursting with flavor and spice. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, and I could tell that the chefs took great pride in their craft. It was a truly authentic Thai culinary experience, and I savored every bite. It was interesting to note that Jen Moy also operates as a cannabis store, a unique combination that reflects the evolving landscape of Chiang Mai. While I didn't partake, it was fascinating to see how the restaurant integrates this aspect into its offerings.

After a satisfying lunch, I continued my journey to San Kamphaeng Hot Springs. The springs are located about 40 kilometers east of Chiang Mai, and the drive took me through more stunning scenery. As I approached the hot springs, I could see steam rising from the ground, a sign of the geothermal activity beneath the surface. It was quite a sight to behold, and I was eager to experience the therapeutic benefits of the mineral-rich waters.

The San Kamphaeng Hot Springs are a popular destination for both locals and tourists, and there were quite a few people enjoying the various pools and facilities. I started by exploring the source of the hot springs, where geothermal fountains spurted into the air. The water was incredibly hot, and I watched as people boiled eggs in the water, a popular activity at the springs. I then made my way down through the park, following a little hot river where people could sit and dip their feet in the geothermal water. The gardens were beautifully landscaped, filled with colorful tropical plants that added to the relaxing atmosphere.

I decided to indulge in a private mineral bath, which cost around 300 baht. The bath was in a small, secluded room, and the water was wonderfully warm and soothing. I soaked in the mineral-rich water for about an hour, letting the heat penetrate my muscles and ease any tension. It was incredibly relaxing, and I felt my stress melt away with each passing minute. I've heard that the hot springs are known for their therapeutic benefits, helping to relieve muscle pain, improve circulation, and detoxify the body. Whether or not those claims are true, I certainly felt rejuvenated and refreshed after my soak.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Chiang Mai, feeling incredibly relaxed and content. The day had been a perfect blend of nature, culture, and relaxation, and I was grateful for the opportunity to escape the city and explore the beautiful highlands. Before heading back to Cozy Inn Chiang Mai, I decided to check out THC Rooftop Bar for a nightcap. Perched high above the city, the bar offered stunning panoramic views of Chiang Mai's skyline. The atmosphere was lively and vibrant, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the music and the drinks. I ordered a cocktail and soaked in the ambiance, reflecting on the day's adventures.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Chiang Mai's cultural treasures, including Wat Lok Moli and Art in Paradise. I'm also looking forward to trying Alice's Restaurant for breakfast, The Chef for lunch, and Favola Chiang Mai for dinner. And perhaps a bit of shopping at Mainiji.Everyday Craft Shop. But for now, I'm content to relax and recharge, knowing that tomorrow will bring new adventures and discoveries.

As I sipped my drink, I couldn't help but think about how much I've grown to love Chiang Mai. It's a city that seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern amenities, offering something for everyone. And the surrounding highlands are simply breathtaking, a testament to the natural beauty of Thailand. I'm already looking forward to returning with Hans and Aisha, sharing these incredible experiences with them, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Before heading back to the hotel, I savored one last look at the city lights, feeling grateful for the day's adventures and excited for what tomorrow would bring. Chiang Mai, you've truly captured my heart.

Tomorrow is the penultimate day of my trip, and I plan to make the most of it! I'm excited to delve deeper into the city's artistic side at Art in Paradise, and I'm also looking forward to exploring the serene beauty of Wat Lok Moli. And of course, I'll be sure to sample some more of Chiang Mai's culinary delights, including Alice's Restaurant for breakfast, The Chef for lunch and Favola Chiang Mai for dinner. I might even pick up a souvenir or two at Mainiji.Everyday Craft Shop.
