Art, Temples, and Thai Flavors: A Perfect Chiang Mai Sunday

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a soothing balm for the soul as my trip nears its end. I decided to immerse myself in the local culture, visiting an artistic village and a serene temple, all while savoring the tastes of Northern Thailand. It was a day of quiet discovery, a reminder of why I love to travel solo – the freedom to wander and discover at my own pace.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Parc Thai Eatery. The restaurant's name, I learned, translates to ladle in the Northern Thai dialect, a tribute to the culinary traditions passed down through generations. The ambiance was delightful, and the food was even better. I opted for the *pla too yat sai hor mok*, a stuffed mackerel dish recommended by the friendly staff. The mackerel was deboned with incredible precision and then stuffed with marinated fish meat before being steamed and fried. The flavors were rich and complex, a delightful start to my day. It reminded me of the flavorful dishes my mother used to cook back in Koumpentoum, Senegal, filling our home with warmth and delicious aromas.

After breakfast, I made my way to Baan Kang Wat, a charming artist village nestled near the university. As I wandered through the village, I was struck by its unique atmosphere. The traditional teak houses and communal spaces exuded a sense of calm and creativity. It felt like stepping into a different world, a haven away from the bustling city. I explored the small galleries, each showcasing unique and interesting art. I also found a cozy café where I sipped on a refreshing lime soda. The village was so green and peaceful, a perfect spot for slow travelers like myself who appreciate sustainable and eco-friendly experiences.

Next on my list was Wat Suan Dok, also known as the Flower Garden Temple. Founded in the 14th century, this temple has a rich history and is an important site for the local people. As I entered the temple grounds, I was immediately struck by the serene atmosphere. The temple was originally a royal flower garden, and you can still see remnants of the ancient walls that surrounded the settlement. According to legend, a monk from the Sukhothai Kingdom had a vision that led him to discover a relic of the Buddha, which was then housed in Chiang Mai. The temple was built to house this relic, making it a significant pilgrimage site.

One of the most striking features of Wat Suan Dok is the grouping of white reliquaries in the northwestern quarter of the temple grounds. These mausoleums contain the ashes of the rulers of Chiang Mai of the Chet Ton Dynasty. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the temple and its connection to the royal family. The main chedi, a gilded, bell-shaped structure, is believed to house a relic of the Buddha. The temple also houses the Chiang Mai campus of the Buddhist Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, adding to its significance as a center of learning.

For lunch, I ventured to Its Good Kitchen, a local restaurant known for its authentic Thai food and gluten-free options. As someone who appreciates diverse culinary experiences, I was excited to try their *khao soi*, a Northern Thai specialty. The restaurant was small and unassuming, but the food was bursting with flavor. The staff was incredibly warm and attentive, making me feel right at home. They even offered gluten-free sauces and alternatives, ensuring that the flavors remained rich and delicious. I also tried their mango sticky rice, which was out of this world. It was the perfect meal to fuel my afternoon explorations.

In the evening, I had dinner at LINK Cuisine, a restaurant that blends international flavors with a modern twist. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, with live music adding to the ambiance. I ordered the coconut soup and fried prawns, a delicious combination of Thai and international cuisine. The service was excellent, and the staff was friendly and attentive. It was a wonderful way to end a day of cultural immersion.

As the day wound down, I decided to check out Boy Blues Bar for some live music. The bar is located in the Kalare Night Market, making it a convenient spot to visit after dinner. The music was soulful, and the musicians were incredibly talented. The bar had a lively atmosphere, and I enjoyed sipping on a refreshing drink while listening to the bluesy rhythms. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my Chiang Mai adventure. I plan to visit the Chiang Mai Gate Market and the Museum of World Insects and Natural Wonders, followed by some last-minute souvenir shopping at the San Kamphaeng Saturday Walking Street. I also plan to have lunch at Madame Koh Fun Dining and a farewell dinner at Tong Tem Toh. I'm looking forward to soaking in the last moments of this incredible journey before heading back to Heidelberg.
