Day 4: A Day of Tranquility and Reggae Rhythms in Chiang Mai
Discovering the peaceful Wat Umong and vibrant Royal Park Rajapruek, followed by reggae vibes at Roots Rock Reggae Chiangmai.
Finding Serenity Amidst Chiang Mai's Charms
Today was a beautiful blend of peaceful reflection and vibrant energy, a true testament to the diverse experiences Chiang Mai has to offer. It's days like these that remind me why I started this journey, seeking out the heart and soul of new places and sharing them with you all. I'm constantly amazed by how much a single day can hold, from ancient temples to blooming gardens and the infectious rhythm of reggae music.
My day started with a hearty breakfast at Nun's Restaurant. I had read reviews praising their Khao Soi, so I decided to try it. It was delicious, a rich and hearty dish that was the perfect way to start my day. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere was very relaxed. It was a great spot to fuel up before a day of exploring.
First on the agenda was Wat Umong Suan Putthatham, a temple unlike any I’ve ever seen. Nestled in a serene, forested area, it felt like stepping into another world. The air was thick with the scent of incense and the sounds of nature, creating an atmosphere of profound peace. As someone who finds solace in quiet contemplation, this temple immediately resonated with me. It reminded me a bit of the quiet spaces I used to seek out in Koumpentoum when I needed a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Wat Umong, meaning 'Tunnel Temple' in Thai, is renowned for its unique network of ancient tunnels. These tunnels, built in the 13th century, wind beneath a large chedi (a Buddhist monument), offering a cool, dark space for meditation. Walking through them, I felt a sense of connection to the monks who had walked these same paths centuries ago. The walls bore traces of ancient murals, adding to the mystique and historical significance of the site. It's incredible to think that King Mangrai, the founder of Chiang Mai, established this temple as a tranquil space for meditation. The tunnels provided a near-silent ambiance, perfect for deeper reflection.
The quieter you become, the more you can hear.
Emerging from the tunnels, I explored the surrounding gardens, where ancient Buddha images sat nestled among the trees. The grounds were scattered with stone inscriptions of Buddhist teachings, inviting contemplation and offering wisdom to those who sought it. I even spotted a black stone Buddha in the Burmese style. The temple's peaceful atmosphere made it easy to understand why it continues to attract monks and visitors seeking spiritual growth. It was easy to lose track of time as I wandered through the grounds, soaking in the tranquility and reflecting on the teachings.

After my visit to Wat Umong, I headed to Royal Park Rajapruek, a sprawling botanical garden created in 2006 to honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The park is a vibrant showcase of Thailand's diverse flora and fauna, as well as stunning architectural structures. The sheer scale of the place was impressive, with themed gardens, international exhibits, and breathtaking landscapes stretching as far as the eye could see. The park was originally known as the International Horticultural Exposition, Royal Flora Rajapruek 2006, and was designed to display the finest examples of Thai horticulture. Later, it was renamed Royal Park Rajapruek and established as a permanent attraction.
One of the highlights of the park was the Ho Kham Luang, a traditional Lanna-style pavilion that houses a royal throne and exhibits related to King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The intricate design, featuring gold leaf and ornate carvings, exemplified the beauty of Thai architecture. It was a testament to the deep connection between the Thai monarchy and the natural world. Wandering through the international gardens, I was struck by the diversity of plant life from around the world. Each garden represented a different country, showcasing unique flora and horticultural styles. It was like taking a trip around the world in a single afternoon!

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over Chiang Mai, I made my way to Roots Rock Reggae Chiangmai, a bar known for its lively music scene. I was ready to experience a different side of the city, one filled with vibrant energy and infectious rhythms. I must admit, I was a bit hesitant at first. I'm not always the most outgoing person, and the thought of diving into a crowded bar scene solo was a little daunting. But I remembered my promise to myself to embrace new experiences, to step outside my comfort zone and see where the journey takes me. And I'm so glad I did!
The bar was buzzing with energy, filled with both locals and travelers swaying to the music. The band was fantastic, playing classic reggae tunes with a unique Thai twist. It was impossible not to get caught up in the infectious rhythm, and soon I found myself tapping my feet and nodding my head along with the music. The atmosphere was laid-back and friendly, and I quickly struck up conversations with some of the other patrons. I met people from all over the world, each with their own stories and experiences to share. It was a reminder of the power of music to bring people together, to transcend cultural boundaries and create a sense of community.
