A Warm Florentine Embrace

Florence has always held a special place in my heart, even before I set foot on its cobblestone streets. As a Senegalese woman living in Germany, I've always been drawn to places where history whispers from every corner and art breathes life into the present. Today, that dream became a reality as my friends and I embarked on our Florentine adventure. It's a journey I'm excited to share, filled with the promise of Renaissance masterpieces, savory Tuscan flavors, and the simple joy of exploring a new world with cherished companions.

Our day began, as all good days should, with a hearty breakfast. We headed to Caffè Gilli, a historic establishment that exudes old-world charm. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sweet scent of pastries, creating an irresistible invitation. Sipping my cappuccino, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the artists and intellectuals who had frequented this very spot over the centuries. It's a delightful way to start the day, soaking in the Florentine atmosphere and preparing for the adventures ahead. The excellent service, competence, kindness and professionalism of the waiters made for an excellent experience.

Energized and ready to explore, we made our way to Piazza della Signoria, the heart of Florence's political and social life. The square was alive with activity, a vibrant tapestry of locals and tourists alike. The imposing Palazzo Vecchio stood proudly, its architecture a testament to the city's rich history. As I stood there, camera in hand, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer beauty and grandeur of it all. Luckily, we were here during the Settimana del Fiorentino, Florence's New Year celebration, so the city was buzzing with even more energy and excitement, with guided tours, events, music, and markets.

We decided to delve deeper into the Palazzo Vecchio, eager to uncover its secrets. From March 14 to June 11, 2025, the Palazzo Vecchio Museum is hosting an exhibition dedicated to Thomas J. Price, featuring sculptural works of varying scale set up within the permanent collection of the museum. Celebrated for his large-scale figurative sculptures, Thomas J Price draws our attention to the psychological embodiment of his fictional characters, foregrounding the intrinsic value of the individual and subverting structures of hierarchy. The museum itself is a masterpiece, each room adorned with intricate frescoes and sculptures that tell stories of power, intrigue, and artistic genius. Walking through its halls, I felt transported back in time, imagining the lives of the Medici family and the artists who shaped this city. I took a moment to appreciate the blend of traditional sculpture and intuitive digital technology that Price used in his work, a fascinating juxtaposition of the old and the new.

Florence is not just a city; it's a living museum where every stone has a story to tell.

Our next stop was the Uffizi Gallery, a treasure trove of Renaissance art. While the crowds were considerable, the experience was well worth the wait. To stand before Botticelli's *Birth of Venus* and Leonardo da Vinci's *Annunciation* is to witness the pinnacle of human creativity. I found myself lost in the details, marveling at the artists' skill and vision. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to immerse myself in different cultures and to witness the beauty that humanity is capable of creating. I made sure to check out the Uffizi's reframing operation of the Cranach masterpieces Adam and Eve, together in a single frame.

By late afternoon, our stomachs were rumbling, signaling the need for sustenance. Based on a recommendation from a local friend, we secured a table at Cantinetta delle Terme for lunch. This charming restaurant, tucked away on Via delle Terme, exuded a cozy and inviting atmosphere. We started with the seafood salad and then moved on to the pasta with raw shrimp and truffle, recommended by the restaurant. This was followed by fried fish and vegetables. It was the perfect midday meal, a delicious and authentic taste of Tuscany.

As evening approached, we decided to indulge in the Florentine tradition of *aperitivo*. We ventured to Locale Firenze, a bar known for its innovative cocktails and stylish ambiance. The bar is lodged along a darkened backstreet between via Ghibellina and via dei Pandolfini, and when you step over the threshold, you enter the thirteenth-century Palazzo Concini. The sense of past doesn't hit home at first due to the fabulously hefty backlit bar, lined every which way with bottles of liquor, and the vertical garden topped with a retractable glass ceiling for the promise of carefree summer nights. I opted for one of their signature drinks, a concoction of local herbs and spirits that awakened my senses. Sipping my cocktail, surrounded by the murmur of conversation and the clinking of glasses, I felt a sense of belonging, as if I were a part of this vibrant city. The bartender was happy to make anything, whether something bespoke or a tried-and-tested classic.

For dinner, we had reservations at Trattoria Sostanza, a Florentine institution famous for its traditional Tuscan cuisine. The trattoria has white-tiled walls hung with photographs and prints, and hard wooden benches and tables run along the perimeter, with more tables squeezed into the center. The menu is decidedly Tuscan with highlights like finocchiona (a fennel-flecked salami), slow-cooked beans, tortino di carciofi (artichoke in swirl of whipped eggs), and butter chicken, which is served sizzling in the pan. The restaurant was small and bustling, filled with locals and tourists eager to sample its legendary dishes. We ordered the butter chicken and the bistecca alla florentina with a side of beans and salad. Each bite was an explosion of flavor, a testament to the simple yet exquisite ingredients that define Tuscan cooking. The communal table was also a fun social experience.

As the day drew to a close, we strolled along the Arno River, the Ponte Vecchio shimmering in the moonlight. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the sounds of laughter and music from the nearby *osterias*. I paused for a moment, taking it all in, feeling grateful for this incredible experience. Florence had exceeded all my expectations, captivating me with its beauty, history, and culinary delights. I knew that this was just the beginning of our Florentine adventure, and I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto's Bell Tower, and the Baptistery of St. John. I am particularly excited to see the Duomo and climb to the top of the bell tower for a panoramic view of the city. I'm also looking forward to trying out Il Santo Bevitore for breakfast, Vini e Vecchi Sapori for lunch, and Osteria dell'Enoteca for dinner. And, of course, a little shopping at Rinascente Firenze is definitely on the agenda!

Back at La Casa del Garbo - Luxury Rooms & Suite, I reflected on the day's adventures with my friends. We shared stories, laughter, and the quiet satisfaction of experiencing something truly special together. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the days to come. Florence, with its timeless charm and vibrant energy, had already cast its spell on me, and I knew that this was a journey I would never forget.
