Ascending to the Heart of Florence

Today was nothing short of breathtaking, a complete immersion into the heart of Florence. I've always been fascinated by the Renaissance, and to walk in the footsteps of masters like Brunelleschi and Giotto, surrounded by the art and architecture they created, was an experience I will treasure forever. I'm so excited to share the details of my day, from the awe-inspiring Duomo to the delicious Tuscan meals that fueled our explorations.

Our Florentine adventure began with a delightful breakfast at Il Santo Bevitore. It was the perfect way to start a day filled with exploration. The ambiance was warm and inviting, much like the people of Florence themselves. Aisha would have loved the pastries; I must remember to try and recreate some of them when I get back to Heidelberg. I had a cappuccino and a pastry, and it set me up for a day of climbing and exploring.

First on our list was the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or the Duomo as it's affectionately known. The sheer scale of the Duomo is astounding. Construction began in 1296, and it structurally was not completed until 1436. The exterior, with its geometric patterns of green, pink, and white marble, is a feast for the eyes. It's a testament to the ambition and artistry of the Florentines.

The beauty of Florence is not just in its art and architecture, but in the way it invites you to step back in time and experience the Renaissance firsthand.

Of course, the highlight was climbing Brunelleschi's Dome. The climb itself is an adventure, a winding ascent between the inner and outer shells of the dome. It's a bit claustrophobic in places, and the steps are uneven, but the views from the top are more than worth the effort. From up there, Florence unfolds before you, a tapestry of red-tiled roofs, winding streets, and rolling hills in the distance. It's a view that truly captures the essence of this beautiful city.

Next, we tackled Giotto's Bell Tower. Giotto's Campanile, as it's known, stands tall as part of the Duomo complex on the Piazza del Duomo. Giotto, a painter, was nominated to be the master of the works of the cathedral, and the first stone was laid in 1334. It stands 84.7 meters tall, and the slender structure is a square. Climbing Giotto's Bell Tower offered a different perspective of Florence. The tower is a masterpiece of Florentine Gothic architecture, and each level offers a new vantage point to admire the city. The climb to the top was quite the workout, with 414 steps winding upwards. But reaching the summit and gazing out at the panoramic views of Florence was incredibly rewarding. From this height, the Duomo's dome looked even more impressive, and I could appreciate the intricate details of the surrounding buildings.

After descending, we stepped into the Baptistery of St. John. It is believed that the Baptistery was built over the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to Mars. The origins of the Baptistery date back to the 4th-5th century. The Baptistery is one of Florence's oldest religious monuments. The interior is adorned with stunning Byzantine-style mosaics, especially the dome. The mosaics depict scenes from the Bible, and the golden light reflecting off the tiny tiles creates a mesmerizing effect. I found myself lost in the intricate details, marveling at the skill and artistry of the mosaicists.

For lunch, we ventured to Vini e Vecchi Sapori, a charming osteria known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. It was tucked away behind the Piazza della Signoria. The menu changes daily, and everything is made fresh. I decided to try the pappardelle al sugo d'antare, a pasta dish with duck ragu. It was an absolute showstopper. The menu had a few warnings, including no pizza, ice, spritz, cappuccino, or ketchup. Vini e Vecchi Sapori is an experience! I made sure to follow their rules.

After lunch, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Rinascente Firenze. It is called the Store of Craft. The poet Gabriele D'Annunzio invented the name Rinascente in 1917. It means she who is reborn. The store emphasizes for the city, with the city, in the city. It's a department store that offers a curated selection of Italian fashion, accessories, and homewares. I was particularly impressed by the craftsmanship on display, from the hand-stitched leather goods to the delicate ceramics. I picked up a few souvenirs for Aisha and Hans, hoping to bring a piece of Florence back home with me.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Osteria dell'Enoteca for dinner. It's located in the Oltrarno neighborhood. It's known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine and extensive wine list. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. I ordered the Florentine steak, a local specialty. It was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful. The staff was friendly and attentive, providing excellent service and making personalized recommendations for each patron. To finish, I ordered the tiramisu with wine sauce instead of coffee. It was delicious and unique.

Today was also the Florentine New Year, which made the day even more special. From March 21 to 23, Piazza Santa Maria Novella is hosting the “Arti e Mestieri” fair, featuring Tuscan crafts and local gourmet products. There are over 200 events from March 21-30 to mark Capodanno Fiorentino.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Oltrarno district, crossing the Ponte Vecchio and visiting the Palazzo Pitti. I'm particularly excited to see the Basilica di Santo Spirito and to sample some local wines at Bitter Bar in the evening with my friends. It’s hard to believe we are already on Day 2 of our trip; time really does fly when you're having fun.

Florence continues to captivate me with its beauty, history, and culture. Each day brings new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds!

It's moments like these, surrounded by beauty and history, that remind me why I love to travel. And it's a joy to share these experiences with you, hoping to inspire your own adventures.
