Discover Chefchaouen's natural beauty at Jebel Bouhachem and delve into history at the Kasbah. A day of family adventure and cultural immersion.
A Day of Discovery
Today was a day of contrasts, where the serene embrace of nature met the stoic whispers of history. Leaving behind the familiar blue hues of Chefchaouen's medina for a while, my family and I ventured into the surrounding landscapes and historical landmarks, creating memories that I know we will cherish for years to come. It was a day filled with exploration, a deeper connection with Morocco, and a reminder of the importance of balancing adventure with moments of quiet reflection.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah. The aroma of freshly baked bread mingled with the rich scent of Moroccan coffee, instantly energizing us for the day ahead. Aisha was particularly excited, her eyes sparkling as she devoured a

Fueled and ready, we set off towards Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. The drive itself was an experience, with the landscape transforming from the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen to the vibrant greens and browns of the countryside. As we approached the reserve, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and earth. The sheer scale of Jebel Bouhachem was impressive, its peak reaching towards the sky, a silent guardian of the region's biodiversity.

We decided to take a leisurely hike along one of the trails, eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the reserve. The path wound through forests of oak and maritime pines, the sunlight filtering through the leaves, creating a mesmerizing dance of light and shadow. Aisha was in her element, her curiosity piqued by every new sight and sound. She spotted colorful birds flitting through the trees and insisted on collecting fallen pinecones, each one a treasure in her eyes. I tried to capture the beauty of the forest through my lens, hoping to preserve the serene atmosphere and the vibrant colors.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
While hiking, we kept an eye out for the Barbary macaques that are known to inhabit the reserve. Although we didn't spot any, the possibility of encountering these playful creatures added an element of excitement to our hike. The reserve is home to over 30 species of mammals and almost 100 recorded birds, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The experience reminded me of the importance of preserving these natural habitats, not just for the animals that live there, but for the well-being of our planet.
After spending several hours exploring Jebel Bouhachem, we drove back towards Chefchaouen, our hearts full of the tranquility and beauty we had encountered. It was time to delve into the historical side of the city, and our next destination was the Kasbah.
Discover the captivating Kasbah of Chefchaouen, a historical landmark that showcases Morocco's rich heritage and stunning architectural beauty.
The Kasbah of Chefchaouen stands as a testament to the city's rich history and cultural significance. Built in the 15th century by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid, it was originally a fortress designed to protect the city from invaders. Today, it is a beautifully restored landmark that offers a glimpse into Chefchaouen's past. As we walked through its imposing walls, I couldn't help but imagine the lives of those who had once sought refuge within them.
The Kasbah houses a museum that showcases artifacts reflecting the region's history, culture, and traditions. We spent a considerable amount of time exploring the exhibits, learning about the Berber culture and the influences that have shaped Chefchaouen over the centuries. Aisha was fascinated by the displays of traditional musical instruments and pottery, her imagination ignited by the stories of the past.
The architecture of the Kasbah is a blend of Moroccan and Andalusian styles, reflecting the city's diverse cultural heritage. The tranquil courtyards and intricately designed doorways were a feast for the eyes. From the top of the Kasbah, we were treated to a panoramic view of Chefchaouen and the surrounding mountains. The iconic blue-painted buildings stretched out before us, a breathtaking sight that reminded me of why this city is known as the Blue Pearl of Morocco. I made sure to capture a few photographs of the view so I could share it with my blog readers.
Following our exploration of the Kasbah, it was time for a late lunch. We decided to try Restaurant Triana, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine and its charming atmosphere. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with the chatter of tourists and locals alike. We ordered a variety of dishes, including tagine, couscous, and pastilla, each one bursting with flavor. The lamb tagine was particularly memorable, the meat tender and succulent, infused with aromatic spices. Aisha surprised us all by trying and enjoying the couscous, a testament to the deliciousness of the dish.

As we savored our meal, we were serenaded by live musicians, their melodies adding to the vibrant ambiance of the restaurant. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome and ensuring that we had everything we needed. It was a truly delightful culinary experience, one that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Chefchaouen.
After lunch, we strolled through the medina, soaking in the sights and sounds of the city. We passed by Jabir shop chefchaouen. The shop was filled with an array of colorful goods, from traditional Moroccan clothing to handmade crafts and souvenirs. I couldn't resist purchasing a few items, including a beautiful handwoven rug and a set of intricately designed tea glasses. These items would serve as reminders of our time in Chefchaouen, tangible connections to the culture and the people we had encountered.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Casa Andaluz for dinner. The restaurant offered a stunning view of the city, the blue buildings shimmering in the soft evening light. We ordered a selection of Moroccan dishes, including the pastille, a traditional pigeon pie that was both savory and sweet. The meal was a perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.

It was a day of contrasts, where the tranquility of nature met the vibrancy of the city, where the whispers of the past mingled with the energy of the present. As we prepare for our final day in Chefchaouen, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the memories we have created and the experiences we have shared. Perhaps we'll even stop by Bar Oum Rabie for a relaxing drink to celebrate the end of our Moroccan adventure. I'm also grateful that I remembered to pack my traditional Senegalese outfits, as I hope to wear them tomorrow for some memorable photos in this beautiful blue city.
As we walked back to Hotel Dar Mounir, Aisha held my hand tightly, her eyes filled with wonder. Mommy, I love Chefchaouen, she said, her voice filled with sincerity. Her words warmed my heart, a reminder of why I love to travel and share these experiences with my family. It's not just about seeing new places, but about creating lasting memories and fostering a deeper understanding of the world around us.
