A Day of Exploration in Kaziranga

Today was a day of venturing beyond the well-trodden paths of Kaziranga, seeking out experiences that offered a deeper connection to the land and its history. It was a day filled with physical challenges, historical insights, and of course, delicious food. I was eager to see what hidden corners this incredible place had to offer.

My day began with an early start, fueled by excitement and a strong cup of masala chai. First on the agenda was the Jambili Trekking Trail. I had heard whispers of its challenging terrain and rewarding views, and as someone who enjoys a good hike, I couldn't resist. After a quick but fortifying breakfast at Patkai Dhaba Cum Restaurant, I set off towards the trail, my trusty hiking boots laced up tight.

The Patkai Dhaba Cum Restaurant was a great place to start the day. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the staff were very welcoming. For breakfast, I had some delicious parathas with a side of spicy potato curry. It was the perfect fuel for a day of trekking.

Jambili Trekking Trail

The Jambili Trekking Trail proved to be every bit as challenging as I had anticipated. The path wound its way steeply uphill, through dense vegetation that occasionally opened up to reveal breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. The air was thick with the sounds of the forest – the chirping of unseen birds, the rustling of leaves, and the occasional call of a monkey.

The climb was strenuous, and I found myself pausing frequently to catch my breath and take in the scenery. As I ascended, the temperature gradually dropped, and a cool breeze swept through the trees, providing welcome relief from the exertion. I passed other hikers along the way, exchanging smiles and words of encouragement. There was a sense of camaraderie among us, a shared understanding of the challenge we were undertaking and the reward that awaited us at the summit.

Reaching the top of the Jambili Trekking Trail was an exhilarating experience. The view was simply stunning – a panorama of rolling hills, lush forests, and distant villages stretching as far as the eye could see. I spent a few moments simply soaking it all in, feeling a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. I could see the Kaziranga National Park from up there. The park looked so serene and peaceful from above.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Forest Heritage IB

After descending from the Jambili Trail, I decided to visit the Forest Heritage IB. It was a short drive from the trekking trail and I was curious to see what it had to offer. The Forest Heritage IB is located in a serene and tranquil environment. As I walked around, I noticed the diverse flora and fauna that call this place home. It was a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy areas of Kaziranga.

I learned that Forest Heritage IB is one of the inspection bungalows in Kaziranga and is primarily meant for accommodating forest officers. However, it is sometimes open to other visitors as well. The building had a rustic charm about it, and I could imagine forest officers staying there, immersed in the heart of nature.

Deoparbat Ruins

Next on my itinerary was Deoparbat, an archaeological site a bit further removed from the central area of Kaziranga. After grabbing a quick and tasty lunch at Hornbill Kaziranga, I set off towards the ruins, eager to explore this historical site. It was built in a traditional Assamese style dhaba. I decided to try the Assamese thali. It had a variety of traditional Assamese dishes, including rice, aloo pitika, goroi maas pitika, and bamboo shoot curry. It was a flavorful and satisfying meal.

The drive to Deoparbat was scenic, passing through tea gardens and small villages. As I approached the site, I could see the ruins perched atop a hill, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Deoparbat, also known as Deopahar, means The God's Hill. The ruins are believed to be the remains of an ancient stone temple and fortress, dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries.

I climbed the hill, taking in the panoramic views of the Numaligarh tea estate and the Karbi Anglong hills. The ruins themselves were fascinating, with scattered sculptures, coins, and bricks hinting at the site's rich history. I learned that Deoparbat is also linked to mythology, with stories of King Jarasandha of Magadha Kingdom camping at the hill. The primary shrine at Deoparbat Ruins venerates Lord Shiva.

The temple was damaged by the Assam earthquake of 1897. Despite being in ruins, the grandeur and beauty of the place were still evident. I spent some time exploring the site, imagining what it must have been like in its prime.

Diphlu River Lodge

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to the Diphlu River Lodge for dinner. I was looking forward to a relaxing evening and a delicious meal after a day of hiking and exploring.

Diphlu River Lodge is nestled on the banks of the Diphlu River, offering a serene and picturesque setting. The lodge combines modern comforts with the thrill of the wild, with cottages overlooking the river, park, or verdant farmland. The architecture embodies the spirit of Assamese culture, with cane furniture and bamboo fittings.

I enjoyed a fusion of Indian and Assamese cuisine at the Machan, the lodge's dining area. The Machan is an air-conditioned sitting and dining area that opens onto a large verandah overlooking the Diphlu River and the national park. I savored every bite as I reflected on the day's adventures.

The staff at Diphlu River Lodge were well-trained and polite. The service was excellent, and I felt well taken care of. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration in Kaziranga.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Eastern Range of Kaziranga, visit the Kathpora tower, and hopefully catch a glimpse of the Bhalukjuri Waterfall. I am also planning to visit the Blue Waves Bar cum Restaurant for a relaxing evening.

Today was a reminder that Kaziranga is more than just its rhinos and tigers. It's a land of diverse landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore its hidden gems and connect with its unique character.
