A Day of Cultural Immersion in Hoi An

Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Hoi An, a town that whispers stories from every corner. Leaving the comforts of Betel Garden Villas, my family and I set out to explore the cultural gems that make this place so special. As someone who grew up in Vietnam, returning always feels like piecing together fragments of a past I cherish. Today, I wanted to share that feeling with Hans and the kids, letting them experience the soul of this ancient town.

Our first stop was the Orivy Hoi An Local Food Restaurant for breakfast, where we enjoyed a hearty meal of *Cao lầu*, a local noodle dish. It's fascinating how food can be such a strong connection to culture, and this was a perfect start to our day of exploration. Energized, we began our walk through the town, instantly drawn to the iconic Hoi An Yellow Wall. It wasn't just a wall; it was a canvas telling tales of history and resilience.

The warm yellow hue, seemingly ubiquitous, has deep roots. I remember my grandmother telling me that yellow symbolizes prosperity and nobility in Vietnamese culture. Seeing it splashed across nearly every building here, I felt a sense of pride in my heritage. We took some family photos, trying to capture the essence of this bewitching town, as the BBC once called it. The kids were fascinated, and even Hans, who usually prefers modern architecture, was impressed by the uniformity and charm of the town's color scheme.

From there, we ventured to the Museum of Folk Culture. Located in a large, exceptionally well-preserved wooden house, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and cultural heritage of the locals. The museum is housed in a 150-year-old Chinese trading house, offering a glimpse into traditional Hoi An architecture. As we wandered through the exhibits, I found myself explaining the significance of various artifacts to my family, from traditional handicrafts to tools used in agriculture. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect them with the traditions that have shaped generations of Vietnamese people.

Hoi An is more than just a city; it's a living museum where every street and building tells a story of the past.

After immersing ourselves in the exhibits, we headed to Pho Xua for lunch. The aroma of traditional Vietnamese soup filled the air as we savored each spoonful. It was a simple yet satisfying meal, providing us with the energy we needed for our next adventure: the Old House of Tan Ky. This remarkably preserved house, built in 1741, has been home to seven generations of the Le family.

Stepping inside was like stepping back in time. The house is a unique blend of Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese architectural styles, reflecting Hoi An's history as a bustling trading port. The intricate carvings and antique furniture offered a glimpse into the lives of the merchants who once thrived here. I was particularly struck by the fact that the house was constructed without using a single nail. It's a testament to the skill and ingenuity of the artisans who built it.

Tan Ky Old House has two doors, one facing the bustling Nguyen Thai Hoc Street and the other opening to the Thu Bon River. This design was perfect for merchants who needed easy access to both land and water routes. The house served as both a shop and a residence, a common arrangement in Hoi An's trading days.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Tan Ky Old House is its history of surviving floods. Despite the frequent flooding in Hoi An, the house has remained remarkably intact. In fact, there are flood markers inside the house, showing just how high the water has risen over the years. It's a reminder of the resilience of the people of Hoi An and their ability to adapt to the challenges of their environment.

As we explored the house, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to my ancestors. This was the kind of house they might have lived in, the kind of life they might have led. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage for future generations.

After the Old House of Tan Ky, we spent some time wandering through Hoi An Old Town (Shopping Street), soaking in the atmosphere and browsing the local shops. The kids were excited to pick out souvenirs, and Hans found a beautiful silk scarf for me. It was a perfect way to end our day of cultural immersion.

For dinner, we chose Lim Dining Room, enticed by its tranquil ambiance and delectable menu. The restaurant was a delightful fusion of traditional and modern Vietnamese cuisine. We enjoyed fresh spring rolls, savory *bánh xèo* (crispy pancakes), and fragrant seafood dishes. It was the perfect way to celebrate a day filled with cultural exploration and family bonding.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on all that we had experienced. We had delved into the heart of Hoi An, exploring its museums, ancient houses, and vibrant streets. We had learned about the history and culture of this fascinating town, and we had created memories that would last a lifetime. As we walked back to our villa, hand in hand, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share my heritage with my family.

Tomorrow, we are planning to take a Lantern Making Class, which I am very excited about. I've always admired the beautiful lanterns that adorn the streets of Hoi An, and I can't wait to learn how to make them myself. We are also planning to take a boat trip on the Thu Bồn River and discover a Hidden Hammock Spot, so it promises to be a day of relaxation and creativity. Before that, we will have breakfast at the Flower Restaurant, and lunch at Firefly Hoi An | Restaurant & Bar. In the evening, after dinner at Vy's Market Restaurant, Hans and I might sneak out for a cocktail at KoFi Hoi An - Cocktail bar. It’s important to have some alone time as well!

Hoi An continues to enchant me. Each visit reveals new layers of its rich tapestry. As a nurse in Berlin, I often care for those who have lived long, full lives. Their stories remind me of the importance of cherishing our heritage and making the most of every moment. This trip is not just a vacation; it's a pilgrimage to my roots, a chance to share the beauty of Vietnam with my loved ones. And as the lanterns glow softly outside our villa, I know that the memories we create here will illuminate our lives for years to come.
