A Day of Lanterns and Leisure

Today was one of those days where Hoi An truly felt like a dream. It was a blend of cultural immersion, tranquil exploration, and the simple joy of discovering hidden gems. I couldn't wait to share all the details with you, especially since Hans and the kids were just as enchanted as I was.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Flower Restaurant. The morning in Hoi An is always so peaceful, and enjoying a traditional Vietnamese breakfast set the perfect tone. Afterwards, we set off for our lantern making class.

The workshop was a vibrant space filled with colorful silks and bamboo frames. The kids were immediately captivated, choosing their favorite colors and shapes. I opted for a classic lotus shape, reminiscent of the lotus flower tattoo on my wrist, a little piece of home that I carry with me. The instructor, a master lantern maker, guided us through each step with patience and humor. Even Hans, who usually isn't the craftiest, got into the spirit, carefully stretching the silk over the frame. The air was filled with laughter and the gentle rustling of silk, a truly immersive experience.

Sometimes, the most beautiful souvenirs are those you create with your own hands.

With our handmade lanterns safely packed, we were ready for our next adventure: a boat trip on the Thu Bồn River.

The river is the lifeblood of Hoi An, and seeing the town from this vantage point offered a fresh perspective. We boarded a traditional wooden boat and set off, the gentle rocking of the water a soothing rhythm. The riverbanks were dotted with scenes of daily life – fishermen casting their nets, children playing by the water's edge, and vibrant markets bustling with activity.

As we floated along, I couldn't help but think about my childhood in Buon Ma Thuot. Rivers have always held a special significance for me, a connection to my roots. Sharing this experience with my family, showing them a different side of Vietnam, filled me with a sense of pride and joy. We passed by the Hoi An Night Market, Thanh Ha Pottery Village, and Cam Thanh Coconut Village, each offering a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

The restaurant's ambiance was as inviting as its menu, and we savored local specialties while overlooking the river. The kids were particularly fond of the fresh spring rolls, while Hans and I enjoyed some expertly prepared seafood.

The kids immediately claimed their hammocks, while Hans and I found a cozy spot to relax and soak in the serene atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind, read a book, or simply enjoy the sounds of nature. I closed my eyes, listening to the gentle breeze rustling through the trees, and felt a sense of peace wash over me. It was a welcome escape from the tourist crowds, a chance to reconnect with ourselves and each other.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we made our way back to Hoi An, ready for dinner at Vy's Market Restaurant.

This place is a culinary institution, and for good reason. The restaurant is set up like a traditional Vietnamese market, with different stalls offering a wide array of street foods and specialties.

We ordered a variety of dishes to share, embracing the Vietnamese way of dining. From noodles to wraps, grilled meats to seafood, there was something for everyone. The flavors were bold and authentic, a true celebration of Vietnamese cuisine. I even tried pigs ear, a dish I wouldn't normally go for, but I figured, when in Vietnam! Hans was brave enough to sample the silkworm salad, but I think I drew the line there.

To cap off our evening, we ventured to KoFi Hoi An - Cocktail bar.

Tucked away in a small alley, this charming bar offered a perfect retreat from the bustling streets. The atmosphere was cozy and artsy, with a fairy tale-like ambiance. The kids enjoyed some refreshing juices, while Hans and I savored expertly crafted cocktails. I had one of the best margaritas I've ever tasted, a perfect blend of sweet and sour.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can still feel the magic of today. Hoi An has a way of weaving its spell around you, captivating your senses and leaving you with a sense of wonder. Sharing these experiences with my family makes it all the more special. I am so glad that we decided to come here for our family vacation.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Sunset View Point, explore the Hoi An Ecotour, and visit the Diep Dong Nguyen House. I am looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery. Good night from Hoi An!
