Day 11: Saturday in Chefchaouen: Exploring Hidden Gems and Local Flavors
Discover the heart of Chefchaouen with visits to El Mellah, Darb Limoun, local shops, and savoring traditional Moroccan cuisine.
Wandering Through Chefchaouen's Soul
Today was all about getting lost in the true essence of Chefchaouen, beyond the picture-perfect facades. It's about those hidden corners and the little details that really make a place come alive. With my friends by my side, I dove headfirst into the heart of this blue city, eager to uncover its secrets.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant populaire. It was bustling with locals, and the aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering tagines filled the air. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast – crusty bread, honey, and a pot of mint tea. It's funny, I remember when Hans and I first started dating, he couldn't understand my love for strong, sweet tea. Now, he brews a pot himself every morning! Fuelled up, we set off to explore El Mellah.

El Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, holds so much history within its walls. The narrow streets whispered stories of a community that once thrived here, adding another layer to Chefchaouen's already rich cultural tapestry. It's fascinating how the Jewish community has influenced the city; I read somewhere that the blue color, which is so iconic to Chefchaouen, was originally more prominent in the Mellah. Wandering through, I couldn't help but reflect on the blend of cultures that have shaped this city over centuries. I thought about my own background, growing up in Vietnam and now living in Germany, and how cultures intertwine and enrich our lives.
The soul of a city is found not in its landmarks, but in the stories whispered within its oldest quarters.
Next on our list was Darb Limoun.

This area is a vibrant maze of alleyways, each corner offering a new photo opportunity. The vibrant blue hues of the buildings were simply mesmerizing, and the play of light and shadow created an almost surreal atmosphere. It felt like stepping into a painting! We stumbled upon little cafes tucked away in quiet corners, the air filled with the aroma of spices and brewing coffee.
Lunch at BILMOS was a real treat.

The restaurant had a separate vegan menu, which made choosing easy. I decided on a vegetable tagine, while my friends opted for some traditional Moroccan dishes. The food was bursting with flavor, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. It reminded me of cooking with my grandmother back in Buon Ma Thuot – the same care and attention to detail in every dish.
After lunch, we ventured into Bazar Sahara.

I was on the hunt for some unique souvenirs, and this place did not disappoint. From colorful textiles to intricately designed ceramics, the shop was a treasure trove of Moroccan crafts. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven rug and a set of ceramic bowls, perfect for serving Vietnamese dishes back in Berlin. Bargaining is definitely part of the fun! I remembered some tips I'd read about engaging with the shopkeepers and asking about the stories behind the items. It made the experience so much more personal and enriching.
As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to dinner at Restaurant blue dream.

The cozy atmosphere and stunning views of the city made it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. I savored every bite of the shrimp tagine, while my friends enjoyed the vegetable couscous. We shared stories and laughter, reminiscing about our adventures throughout the day.
I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary. We're planning to visit Khandak Semmar and Bab el Mahrouk, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Mandala. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems Chefchaouen has in store for us! It's moments like these, shared with friends in a beautiful corner of the world, that make all the hard work as a geriatric nurse back in Berlin worthwhile. These experiences fuel my soul and remind me of the importance of cultural exchange and connection. The world is so vast and diverse, and I feel incredibly grateful to be able to explore it, one blue alleyway at a time.
Chefchaouen has truly captured my heart. It's more than just a pretty blue city; it's a place with a soul, a history, and a vibrant culture that I feel so privileged to experience. It's a place that reminds me of the importance of slowing down, connecting with others, and appreciating the simple joys of life. And as I reflect on today's adventures, I can't help but smile, knowing that there are still so many more stories to uncover in this enchanting blue jewel of Morocco.
And as I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I’m reminded of a quote I once read:
Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
