Finding Magic in the Mountains

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the whimsical artistry of Anima (André Heller Garden), a place that can only be described as a living dream. As we stepped through the entrance, we were immediately transported into a world where vibrant sculptures peeked out from lush foliage, and the air hummed with the quiet energy of creativity. It was like walking into a painting, each corner revealing a new surprise, a new perspective.

The garden was conceived by multimedia artist André Heller, and it's clear that every detail was carefully considered. There were pieces that made me laugh, others that made me think, and some that simply took my breath away. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was initially skeptical, but even he couldn't deny the magic of the place. We wandered hand-in-hand through the winding paths, discovering hidden fountains, exotic plants, and sculptures that seemed to have a life of their own.

Art doesn't reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see.

One of the most striking aspects of Anima Garden was its ability to blend international themes with the local landscape. It wasn't just a collection of art; it was a conversation between cultures, a celebration of human creativity in all its forms. We enjoyed fresh fruit juices and Moroccan pastries made with ingredients sourced directly from the garden itself at the on-site cafe, which was a welcome tonic after our enriching tour through the lavish, colourful garden.

Leaving Anima Garden, we felt invigorated and inspired, ready to delve into the more traditional aspects of Ourika Valley. Our next destination was the Maison du meunier berbère, a Berber mill house. This was a chance to step back in time and witness a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The mill was simple, but its purpose was profound: to grind grain and provide sustenance for the community.

We met the miller, a kind-faced man with eyes that held the wisdom of generations. He showed us how the mill worked, explaining the intricate process of harnessing the power of the river to turn the grinding stones. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the ingenuity and resilience of the Berber people. I was struck by the simplicity of their lives, their deep connection to the land, and their unwavering sense of community.

After our visit to the mill, we were ready for a late lunch. We stopped at La muraille de l'ourika, a restaurant that offered a mix of international and local cuisine. Hans, craving something familiar, opted for a pizza, while I decided to try a traditional chicken tagine. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming.

As we ate, we reflected on the day's adventures. From the whimsical artistry of Anima Garden to the grounded traditions of the Berber mill, we had experienced the full spectrum of Ourika Valley's charm. It was a day of contrasts, but also a day of connection, a reminder that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places.

In the evening, we decided to try a local bar, Café restaurant elJawhara vert. It was a cozy little place with a relaxed atmosphere. We sat outside, sipping mint tea and watching the locals chat and laugh. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we enjoyed a hearty dinner at Agdal Ourika. The restaurant is nestled in the valley, offering stunning views of the Atlas Mountains. I savored a flavorful tagine while Hans enjoyed grilled meats. Although some online reviews mention mixed experiences, we found the service to be friendly and the food satisfying. It was the perfect way to cap off a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion.

As I write this, nestled in our cozy room, I am already excited for tomorrow. We plan to visit Paradis du Safran Maroc, a saffron farm, and then hike to the Ourika Valley Waterfalls. I've packed my hiking boots and am eager to see what other wonders this valley holds. Good night from Ourika Valley!

I am so glad that we decided to stay in local guesthouses rather than book a hotel. We are really experiencing the local culture, and the people have been so welcoming.

It's funny, though, I realized today that I forgot to pack my sunglasses! The sun here is quite strong, and I definitely miss them. Hans keeps teasing me about my packing skills, but I think he secretly enjoys having a reason to buy me a new pair from Ourika shop tomorrow!
