Day 8: A Sunday of Serenity and Flavors in Ourika Valley
Discover the hidden gems of Ourika Valley with local cuisine, stunning views, and unforgettable moments in Morocco's serene paradise.
A Day of Valley Delights
Today was a day of embracing the simple joys of Ourika Valley. After a week of adventurous hikes and bustling markets, Hans and I decided to slow down and savor the local flavors and serene landscapes. It was a day filled with delicious food, stunning views, and moments of pure relaxation.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Timalizen. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of freshly baked bread and mint tea. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast – msemen (pancakes) with honey and a steaming glass of mint tea. The msemen was perfectly flaky and the honey added just the right amount of sweetness. Hans, ever the adventurous eater, tried the tagine for breakfast, which was surprisingly delicious and hearty. Fuelled up, we set out to explore the local area around Dar Soulaimane Ourika Marrakech.

The views from Dar Soulaimane were simply breathtaking. Perched high on a hill, it offered a panoramic vista of the valley below. The vibrant colors of the Berber villages dotted the landscape, contrasting beautifully with the lush greenery of the surrounding fields. We spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, feeling grateful for the peace and tranquility of this place. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, offering us tips on where to explore and making us feel right at home.
Around midday, our stomachs started to rumble again, so we headed to Café Restaurant Azaghar Ourika for lunch. This charming café is known for its tagines made from local ingredients. I decided on the lamb tagine with prunes and almonds, while Hans chose the vegetable tagine. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, the lamb tender and succulent, and the vegetables fresh and vibrant. The tagines were served with warm, crusty bread, perfect for mopping up the delicious sauce. The café itself had a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, with friendly staff and a mix of locals and tourists. It was the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a leisurely lunch.

“Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from simply slowing down and savoring the everyday moments.”
After lunch, we decided to visit Ourika Lodge. Although we weren't staying there, we had heard wonderful things about its beautiful gardens and stunning views. We strolled through the grounds, admiring the vibrant flowers and aromatic herbs. The lodge exuded a sense of rustic elegance, blending traditional Moroccan architecture with modern comforts. We imagined spending a few nights here, waking up to the sound of birdsong and the scent of orange blossoms. It’s definitely on our list for a return visit!

As the afternoon wore on, we found ourselves drawn to the Churchill Bar for a pre-dinner drink. Now, I know what you might be thinking – a British-themed bar in the heart of Morocco? But the Churchill Bar is more than just a bar; it's an institution. Named after Sir Winston Churchill, who famously loved to spend his winters in Marrakech, the bar exudes an air of old-world glamour and sophistication. We sipped on expertly crafted cocktails, surrounded by plush furnishings and the soft glow of candlelight. Hans, ever the history buff, regaled me with stories of Churchill's visits to Marrakech and his fondness for the Mamounia Hotel, where the bar is located. It was a delightful way to end the afternoon, feeling transported back in time to a bygone era.

For our final meal of the day, we chose Chez Larbi Ourika Restaurant Maison d'hôtes. This charming guesthouse and restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm hospitality. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening air and the twinkling lights of the valley below. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel like part of their family. We ordered a selection of traditional dishes, including tagine (of course!), couscous, and grilled meats. Everything was cooked to perfection, the flavors rich and complex, and the portions generous. It was the perfect way to end our day of culinary exploration, feeling full, content, and deeply grateful for the experiences we had shared.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that sometimes the most memorable travel experiences are not about ticking off famous landmarks or engaging in adrenaline-pumping activities. Sometimes, it's about slowing down, immersing yourself in the local culture, and savoring the simple pleasures of life. Today was a perfect example of that, a day of serenity, flavors, and unforgettable moments in the heart of Ourika Valley.
As I write this, Hans is already fast asleep, dreaming of tomorrow's adventures. We plan to explore the Moroccan Nature Trail and Azrou Melloul West Bank. I am excited to see what the final day of our trip brings. Good night from Ourika Valley!
I'm so grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you all. Until tomorrow!
