Family Cultural Exploration in Kyoto
Day 1: A Day of Art and Serenity in Kyoto
Discover Kyoto's blend of modern art and ancient temples. A day of cultural immersion with family, creating memories that will last.
Kyoto's Cultural Embrace
Our first day in Kyoto was nothing short of magical. Stepping off the train, the crisp February air felt like a welcome embrace, a stark contrast to the familiar Berlin chill. The blend of anticipation and excitement bubbled within me as we set out to explore this ancient city with my husband, Hans. I was particularly excited to dive into the art scene, something I've been looking forward to since we boarded our flight from Berlin.
Our Kyoto adventure began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Kizahashi. The restaurant was cozy, filled with the aroma of freshly made miso soup and grilled fish. It was the perfect start to a day dedicated to exploring Kyoto's cultural treasures. Though Kizahashi seems to be more known in Kanazawa, the breakfast here in Kyoto was still amazing!

Fueled and ready, we headed to the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art (MoMAK). Nestled in Okazaki Park, the museum itself was a haven of tranquility [I was glad I did not forget my comfortable walking shoes!]. The building's architecture was a beautiful blend of modern design and traditional Japanese aesthetics. Inside, we were immediately drawn into the world of Japanese modern art. I found myself captivated by the way the artists blended traditional techniques with contemporary themes. Hans, with his engineering mind, was fascinated by the structural elements and the use of space within the exhibits. I was particularly drawn to the works of the Kyoto School, whose paintings beautifully captured the essence of Japanese landscapes and culture. The museum shop was a delight, offering everything from postcards to exquisite glass crafts. It was tempting to buy everything, but I settled on a small print of a Kyoto landscape to remind me of this day.
"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see."
After immersing ourselves in the modern art scene, we sought a traditional culinary experience at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura for lunch. This restaurant offered a unique opportunity to savor authentic Kyoto cuisine. We opted for a set meal featuring fresh fish and seasonal local vegetables. The restaurant is known for it's Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option, with six to seven kinds of Obanzai that match well with rice such as pumpkin, taro root, bean curd lees, hijiki seaweed. The delicate flavors and meticulous presentation of each dish were a testament to the chef's dedication to preserving Kyoto's culinary heritage. The atmosphere was serene, with the gentle sound of the koto playing in the background, enhancing the overall dining experience. I was particularly impressed by the all-you-can-eat Obanzai, a selection of traditional Kyoto-style side dishes. It was a wonderful way to sample a variety of local flavors.

Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring the Chion-in Temple, the headquarters of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Sect). As we approached the temple, the colossal Sanmon gate, the largest of its kind in Japan, left us in awe. The sheer scale and intricate design of the gate were a testament to the power and influence of the Tokugawa shogunate, who supported the temple's reconstruction in the 17th century. The temple grounds were vast, encompassing serene gardens, imposing halls, and historic structures. We wandered through the Mieido Hall, which houses an image of Hōnen, the founder of the Pure Land Sect, and marveled at the intricate details of the architecture. The nightingale floors, designed to squeak underfoot to alert residents of intruders, added a unique and fascinating element to our visit. Learning about the history of the temple, founded in 1234 by Hōnen's disciple Genchi, gave us a deeper appreciation for its significance as a center of Buddhist learning and practice. The temple bell, the largest in Japan, was a sight to behold. I could only imagine the sound it would make when rung by a team of seventeen monks. It was fascinating to learn that the temple was built on the very site where Hōnen settled to disseminate his teachings and where he eventually died. It added a layer of reverence to the entire experience. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I found it inspiring to see how the temple has preserved its traditions and architectural heritage over centuries.

Before dinner, we took a detour to the Kyoto Crafts Store, hoping to find a special memento of our trip. The store was a treasure trove of traditional Japanese arts and crafts, from delicate pottery to intricate lacquerware. I was particularly drawn to the Kyo Zogan (Damascene) necklaces, each one a unique piece of art with a history spanning over 1200 years. Hans, on the other hand, was fascinated by the craftsmanship of the Japanese swords, marveling at the skill and precision required to create such intricate weapons. We eventually settled on a small piece of Nishijin brocade, a type of silk fabric woven in Kyoto, as a reminder of our visit.

For dinner, we chose Hafuu, a restaurant renowned for its Wagyu beef dishes. Securing a reservation was a challenge, but it was well worth the effort. The restaurant's ambiance was a delightful blend of traditional and contemporary, with wooden walls and beautiful art adorning the space. We opted for the sirloin set meal, and the Wagyu beef was simply divine. The meat was tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. The owner was incredibly welcoming, speaking fluent English and making us feel right at home. I was particularly impressed by the chef's ability to showcase beef in so many different ways without compromising its flavor. It was a truly memorable dining experience, and I would highly recommend Hafuu to anyone visiting Kyoto.
