Day 5: A Day of Serenity and Flavors in Kyoto
Discover Kyoto's serene shrines, lush gardens, and exquisite dining experiences, blending culture and cuisine in a perfect day.
Kyoto's Gentle Embrace
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a serene unfolding of Kyoto's beauty that resonated deeply with my soul. It's days like these, where the cultural tapestry of this city truly shines, that remind me why I love to travel. Hans and I, along with the kids, embarked on a journey that touched on the spiritual, the natural, and the culinary delights that Kyoto so generously offers.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta. I've always believed that a good day starts with a good meal, and Katsukura certainly delivered. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy, and the miso soup warmed us from the inside out. It was the ideal fuel for a day of exploration.

Heian Shrine: A Breath of Vermilion
Our first stop was the magnificent Heian Shrine. As we approached, the giant torii gate, standing tall and vermilion against the winter sky, was a sight to behold. The shrine, built to commemorate Kyoto's 1100th anniversary, is dedicated to Emperor Kammu and Emperor Komei. The architecture, a scaled-down replica of the original Heian Palace, transported us back in time. The vast courtyard offered a sense of peace, and we took our time wandering around, admiring the intricate details and soaking in the atmosphere. I found myself reflecting on the history and traditions that have shaped this city, a sentiment that always brings me closer to understanding different cultures.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its historical sites, but in the harmony it creates between the past and the present.
Although the famous weeping cherry trees weren't in bloom yet, I could imagine the stunning spectacle they would create in spring. I made a mental note to return during cherry blossom season someday. It is nice to visit Heian Shrine in February, as there are less tourists during this time of the year, which makes it a great experience.
Kyoto Botanical Gardens: A Winter Oasis
Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Despite it being February, the gardens were far from barren. The greenhouse was a tropical paradise, filled with exotic plants and flowers that thrived regardless of the outside temperature. We wandered through the different sections, marveling at the diversity of plant life. It was a refreshing escape from the winter chill, and the kids were fascinated by the vibrant colors and unusual shapes.

Even though it's winter, there was still beauty to be found. I noticed some plum blossoms beginning to bloom, signaling the arrival of spring. Plum blossoms are special because they bloom slightly longer and are usually visible from February through March. We also explored the Japanese Garden, appreciating the serene ponds and meticulously arranged landscapes. The gardens provided a tranquil space for reflection, a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature.
Oryori Menami: A Taste of Kyoto's Soul
For lunch, we ventured to Oryori Menami, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. It was founded in 1939, Ryori Menami is a long-established izakaya that offers a variety of seasonal Kyoto cuisine, focusing on obanzai. The restaurant had a Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand in 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2020. The moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff greeted us with genuine smiles, and we felt immediately at home. We decided to try the obanzai, a selection of small, seasonal dishes that showcased the flavors of Kyoto. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The gentle flavors of the dishes highlighted Kyoto vegetables and seasonal ingredients. This gentle introduction to Kyoto's culinary soul was exactly what we needed.

The experience at Oryori Menami was more than just a meal; it was a cultural exchange. I found myself chatting with the proprietress, learning about the history of the restaurant and the importance of using local ingredients. It's these personal connections that make travel so rewarding.
Higashiyama Jisho-ji (Ginkaku-ji): The Silver Pavilion's Subtle Charm
In the afternoon, we made our way to Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion. Modeled after Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Ginkaku-ji was initially planned as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. Unlike its golden counterpart, the Silver Pavilion is not covered in precious metals. However, its understated elegance and tranquil gardens exuded a subtle charm that resonated deeply with me.

We wandered through the meticulously maintained grounds, admiring the moss garden, the ponds, and the carefully raked sand formations. The Zen gardens offered a sense of peace and contemplation, inviting us to slow down and appreciate the present moment. I found myself drawn to the Kogetsudai (Moon Viewing Platform), a massive sand structure said to resemble Mount Fuji. It was a reminder of the beauty and simplicity that can be found in nature.
It was really calm when we came here in February, as there were not many tourists around. We followed the Philosopher's Path, a beautiful walking path along a canal, lined with cherry trees, which took me close to Higashiyama-Jisho-ji. I really recommend visiting this special place.
Daimaru Kyoto Store: A Touch of Retail Therapy
Before dinner, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at the Daimaru Kyoto Store. Daimaru Kyoto Store is a vibrant department store that combines an array of shops, including gift items, cosmetics, and gourmet grocery options, making it a one-stop shop for all your needs. The store's layout invites leisurely exploration, allowing visitors to discover unique souvenirs and high-quality local products that reflect the essence of Kyoto's rich culture.

The kids were excited to explore the toy section, while Hans and I browsed the local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for friends and family back in Berlin, wanting to share a piece of Kyoto with them. We also ventured into the gourmet grocery section, sampling local delicacies and admiring the beautifully packaged treats.
The Daimaru Kyoto Store provided a glimpse into the modern side of Kyoto, a contrast to the historical sites we had visited earlier in the day. It was a reminder that Kyoto is a city that seamlessly blends tradition and innovation.
French Dining Top of Kyoto: A Culinary Finale
For our final experience of the day, we had dinner at French Dining Top of Kyoto. Located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto, this revolving restaurant offered panoramic views of the city. We had a 5 course dinner here, and were amazed.
