Solo Art Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 1: Art Immersion Begins: Naoshima's Masterpieces Unveiled
First day on Naoshima Island exploring world-class museums and art installations, a journey blending art, architecture, and nature.
Day 1: Diving into Naoshima's Art Scene
My arrival on Naoshima Island marked the beginning of an artistic pilgrimage I've been anticipating for months. Stepping off the ferry, I was immediately enveloped in the island's serene atmosphere, a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Berlin. Today was all about immersing myself in the contemporary art that defines Naoshima, and I couldn't wait to get started.
The journey from Berlin was long, but the thought of experiencing Naoshima's unique blend of art, architecture, and nature kept me going. Hans, bless his heart, was a bit worried about me traveling alone, but he knows how much this trip means to me. He even helped me pack, though I did forget my travel journal – a small oversight I'll have to remedy soon. The weather in June is pleasantly warm, though a bit humid, which reminds me a little of Vietnam during the rainy season.
My first stop was the Benesse House Museum. The museum itself is an architectural marvel, seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape. As I wandered through the exhibits, I was struck by the way the art interacted with the natural light and the serene views of the Seto Inland Sea. The collection is diverse, featuring works by renowned artists from around the world. I found myself particularly drawn to the pieces that explored themes of nature and humanity's relationship with it. It was more than just viewing art; it was an immersive experience that challenged my perceptions and stirred my emotions.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After spending a few hours at Chichu Art Museum, I made my way to the Chichu Art Museum. This museum is an underground marvel designed by Tadao Ando. The experience begins even before you enter, as you walk through meticulously designed spaces that prepare you for the art within. The museum houses works by James Turrell, Walter De Maria, and Claude Monet. Monet's Water Lilies were particularly captivating, displayed in a room that allows natural light to filter in, creating an ethereal atmosphere. The way Ando incorporated natural light into the underground spaces was simply breathtaking. It felt like I was in a futuristic cave, discovering relics from the past.

For lunch, I stopped by Cin.na.mon, a stylish restaurant near Miyanoura Port. I decided to try their famous curry and some fresh seafood. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect place to recharge before continuing my art exploration. I even grabbed a tapioca drink to go, a little treat to enjoy while walking around the island.

In the afternoon, I visited the Art House Project: Go'o Shrine. This project involves transforming abandoned houses, temples, and shrines into art installations. Go'o Shrine was particularly interesting, blending traditional Shinto architecture with contemporary art. The shrine itself has been restored with a modern makeover, and there's an underground chamber lit only by flashlight. It was a unique experience that blurred the lines between art, sacred space, and public place. The contrast between the traditional architecture and the modern art was both jarring and harmonious, a testament to the island's ability to blend the old and the new.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I made a quick stop at the Benesse House Shop. I wanted to find a small memento of my first day on the island. I ended up buying a beautiful postcard featuring one of the sculptures from the Benesse House Museum. It's a perfect reminder of the incredible art I experienced today.

For dinner, I decided to try Ebisukamo, a cozy izakaya in Honmura village. The owner was incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere felt like dining in a close friend's living room. I ordered a variety of seafood dishes, and everything was fresh and delicious. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with art and exploration. The sake menu was impressive, and the staff recommended a pairing that complemented my meal perfectly.

As I walked back to my lodge, I reflected on the incredible day I had. Naoshima Island is truly a special place, where art and nature come together in perfect harmony. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit the Lee Ufan Museum and explore the iconic Yellow Pumpkin. I also plan to check out Café Ippo for breakfast, Okonomiyaki Umikko for lunch and NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda for dinner. And perhaps end the day at Bar SARU. I'm also excited to see more of the island and discover hidden gems along the way.
The humidity, the art, the food - it all reminds me of the beauty and simplicity I miss from my hometown in Vietnam. Maybe that's why I feel so at peace here. Time to rest up and recharge for another day of art and adventure!
