A Day of Art and Island Wonders

Today was a day of complete immersion in the art and atmosphere of Naoshima. From thought-provoking museums to whimsical sculptures and delightful local flavors, the island unfolded its many layers, offering moments of both profound reflection and simple joy. It's amazing how much a small island can offer, and I'm already feeling so connected to this place.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo. Tucked away near the Art House Project area, this charming café felt like stepping into someone's home. The vegan fare was delicious, and the coffee was just what I needed to kickstart a day of exploring. The friendly couple running the place made me feel so welcome, a perfect start to my Naoshima adventures. It reminded me of the cozy cafes I used to frequent back in Buon Ma Thuot, where the sense of community was just as strong.

With renewed energy, I set off to the Lee Ufan Museum. The museum itself is a work of art, designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando. The minimalist concrete structure blends seamlessly with the surrounding nature, creating a serene space for contemplation. Inside, Lee Ufan's installations of stone, concrete, and iron evoked a sense of quiet power. The way the light played on the surfaces and the open spaces invited introspection. It was a far cry from the often-overcrowded museums in Berlin, offering a peaceful and intimate experience. The museum truly embodies the concept of symbiosis of nature, architecture and art.

Art is not about the object but about the space in between.

After the Lee Ufan Museum, I made my way towards the iconic Yellow Pumpkin. As I approached, the vibrant sculpture stood out against the backdrop of the Seto Inland Sea. It was a sunny day, and the polka dots seemed to dance in the light. Of course, I had to take the obligatory tourist photos, but beyond the photo op, there was something genuinely captivating about the pumpkin. It’s playful, yet thought-provoking, a perfect representation of Naoshima's unique blend of art and nature. I even saw a family from Germany excitedly taking pictures, a reminder of how art can transcend cultural boundaries. It’s amazing to think this piece was initially intended for temporary exhibition, but it resonated so strongly with the island's ethos that it became a permanent fixture.

Next, I strolled over to the Red Pumpkin at Miyanoura Port, a piece that greets everyone arriving by ferry. Unlike the Yellow Pumpkin, you can actually step inside this one. The experience was surreal, looking out through the polka-dot-shaped openings at the surrounding harbor. It felt like being inside a giant, playful womb, a unique perspective on the world. Thinking about Yayoi Kusama's journey, how she transforms her personal struggles into vibrant and accessible art, is truly inspiring.

For lunch, I ventured to Okonomiyaki Umikko, a charming family-run restaurant. The okonomiyaki was delicious, and the friendly owners made me feel like a regular. It was a comforting, home-style meal, a welcome change from the often-pretentious culinary experiences one finds in big cities. As I savored the flavors, I couldn't help but reflect on how food, like art, can be a powerful expression of culture and community. I overheard a couple speaking German, and I felt a pang of homesickness for Hans, but also gratitude for this solo adventure.

As evening approached, I decided to try NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda for dinner. This eatery is known for its fresh seafood set meals, and it didn't disappoint. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the side dishes were a delightful mix of local flavors. The restaurant is also connected to a small art gallery, adding to the island's artistic ambiance. I chose the grilled fish set, and every bite was a testament to the island's culinary heritage. It reminded me of the fresh seafood my mother used to cook in Buon Ma Thuot, simple yet bursting with flavor.

With the sun beginning to set, I headed to Bar SARU for a nightcap. This cozy bar had a laid-back atmosphere, and the reggae music created a relaxed vibe. I enjoyed a glass of Naoshima beer, a local brew that was surprisingly good. Chatting with the bartender, I learned more about the island's history and its thriving art scene. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration, soaking in the island's unique energy. The bar felt like a microcosm of Naoshima itself – small, intimate, and full of character.

As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, the island was bathed in the soft glow of the moonlight. The air was cool and still, and the only sound was the gentle lapping of the waves. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and contentment. Naoshima had worked its magic, offering a day of art, culture, and connection. It's a place that nourishes the soul, and I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Art House Project in more detail, visiting Minamidera, Kadoya, and Haisha. I'm particularly intrigued by the idea of abandoned houses transformed into art spaces, a testament to the island's creative spirit. I also hope to visit the Art Island Center to learn more about the local art scene.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a note to buy a travel journal tomorrow. I realized I should have packed one to better capture these experiences. Also, I need to find a power adapter; my phone is almost out of battery.

Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire me. It’s a place where art isn’t just something you observe; it’s something you live and breathe. And as I close my eyes tonight, I’m filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring.
