Day 2: Marrakech's Heartbeat

Today was a deep dive into the historical and cultural heart of Marrakech. It’s amazing how much history is packed into this city, and I’m so excited to share my experiences wandering through its vibrant marketplaces, opulent palaces, and solemn tombs. It felt like stepping back in time, and I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate details and rich stories woven into every corner.

Our day began, as it should, with breakfast at the TUI BLUE Medina Gardens – Adults Only – All Inclusive. The buffet was a delightful spread of Moroccan and continental options, fueling us up for a day of exploration. I made sure to grab an extra bottle of water, remembering my oversight with the sunglasses yesterday – hydration is key in this climate!

First up was the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa. Even though I knew it was a must-see, nothing could have prepared me for the sheer sensory overload. As we approached, the sounds of snake charmers' flutes, the rhythmic drumming, and the calls of food vendors grew louder, creating an electrifying atmosphere. The square was a kaleidoscope of colors, smells, and activity. Lena was immediately captivated by the henna artists, while our friends were drawn to the storytellers, their animated gestures and booming voices drawing in crowds. I, myself, was fascinated by the Gnawa musicians, their hypnotic music and vibrant costumes creating a mesmerizing spectacle. It was a whirlwind of an experience, a true immersion into the heart of Marrakech. Apparently there's a Spring Equinox Trek happening in Marrakech this week, which probably adds to the excitement!

The soul of Marrakech is not found in its monuments, but in the vibrant pulse of its people and their traditions.

Next, we escaped the frenzy of the square for the serene beauty of Bahia Palace. This palace, built in the late 19th century, is a stunning example of Moroccan architecture and artistry. As we wandered through the maze of courtyards, gardens, and intricately decorated rooms, I was struck by the sheer opulence and attention to detail. The zellij tilework was exquisite, the cedarwood ceilings were intricately carved, and the stucco patterns were simply breathtaking. I learned that the palace was built by Si Moussa, the grand vizier of the Sultan, and later expanded by his son, Ba Ahmed. The name 'Bahia,' meaning 'brilliance,' perfectly captures the essence of this architectural masterpiece. It's fascinating to think that this palace, once a royal residence, is now open to the public, allowing us to glimpse into Morocco's rich history and cultural heritage. It's amazing to see how the palace showcases a blend of Islamic and Moroccan architectural styles, featuring intricate marquetry, stunning zellij, and ornate ceilings. The design includes several riads, a harem section, and a grand courtyard, which was used for entertaining distinguished guests.

After the Bahia Palace, we ventured to the Saadian Tombs, a hidden gem that remained lost for centuries until their rediscovery in 1917. Stepping into the tombs felt like entering a different world, a world of solemnity and reverence. The tombs, dating back to the 16th century, are the final resting place of members of the Saadian dynasty. The intricate carvings, the vibrant tilework, and the serene atmosphere created a powerful sense of history and spirituality. I learned that the tombs were commissioned by Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur, who wanted to create a final resting place for his family that would reflect the dynasty's power and wealth. The Chamber of the Twelve Columns was particularly impressive, with its twelve marble columns supporting the high ceiling and its walls adorned with intricate carvings and colorful zellij tiles. It's incredible to think that these tombs were hidden for so long, and that they now stand as a testament to Morocco's rich cultural heritage. It was very interesting to know that the Saadian Tombs are the final resting place of 66 princes and over 100 chancellors and wives from the Saadian dynasty and that they showcase the pinnacle of Moroccan architectural excellence from the 16th century.

For lunch, we sought refuge from the afternoon heat at Dar Cherifa, a charming café-restaurant nestled in the heart of the Medina. This beautifully restored 16th-century house offered a tranquil escape from the bustling streets outside. The atmosphere was incredibly peaceful, with a central courtyard, tall columns, and ancient stucco work. The menu was a delightful blend of Moroccan and international flavors. I opted for the ginger chicken skewers with aromatic couscous, while Lena chose the vegetable briouattes. Both dishes were delicious, and the setting was simply magical. It felt like stepping back in time, savoring the flavors of Morocco in a truly authentic setting. I was very happy to discover that Dar Cherifa is now a charming literary cafe with Art Exhibitions and Cultural events and small restaurant.

In the late afternoon, we indulged in some retail therapy at Marrakech Artisan Jewellery. I was on the hunt for a special souvenir, something that would remind me of my time in this enchanting city. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted jewelry, blending traditional Moroccan designs with modern aesthetics. I found a beautiful silver bracelet with intricate Berber patterns, a perfect reminder of our adventures. Lena picked up a delicate necklace with a tiny tagine pendant, a whimsical nod to our culinary experiences. It's nice to know that the jewelry blends traditional know-how with modern design and that each unique piece embodies the elegance and authenticity of Moroccan craftsmanship.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Churchill Bar for a pre-dinner drink. Located in the legendary La Mamounia hotel, this bar exudes an air of old-world sophistication. The atmosphere was intimate and refined, with plush leather seating, soft lighting, and live jazz music. I ordered a classic Negroni, while Lena opted for a refreshing Mojito. Sipping our drinks, we soaked in the ambiance and imagined ourselves transported back to the days when Winston Churchill himself frequented this iconic establishment. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I was amazed to find out that the Churchill Bar is styled after a vintage Pullman railway carriage, where guests can hear staff tell tales of the hotel's celebrated guests, ranging from Churchill and Franklin D Roosevelt to Charlie Chaplin and the Rolling Stones.

Our culinary journey continued with dinner at Dar Yacout, a renowned restaurant that promised an unforgettable Moroccan dining experience. And it certainly delivered! The restaurant was a feast for the senses, with opulent décor, intricate tilework, and a mesmerizing ambiance. We were greeted with warm hospitality and led to a rooftop terrace, where we enjoyed panoramic views of the city as the sun set. The meal was a multi-course extravaganza, showcasing the best of Moroccan cuisine. From the flavorful salads to the succulent tagines and the delicate pastries, every dish was a work of art. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was simply magical. It was a truly unforgettable evening, a perfect culmination of our day of exploration. I also found out that the location is not easy to find and getting a taxi is recommended and that the riad is stunning, with attention to every corner is evident.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can still feel the vibrant energy of Jemaa el-Fnaa, the serenity of Bahia Palace, and the solemnity of the Saadian Tombs. Marrakech has a way of captivating your senses and leaving an indelible mark on your soul. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we'll explore the enchanting Le Jardin Secret and the historic Madrasa Ben Youssef. And, of course, sample more of Marrakech's culinary delights, with lunch at Cafe Restaurant Dar L'hssira and dinner at Le Foundouk. I think I'll also check out Pointbar Marrakech and the 33 RUE MAJORELLE shop.

Until then, good night from Marrakech!
