A Day of Reflection and Renewal

As my journey through Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of gratitude and nostalgia. Today was all about soaking in the last moments of tranquility and beauty this city has to offer, from the serene landscapes of the botanical gardens to the spiritual solace of ancient shrines. It's hard to believe my solo exploration is already coming to an end, but I'm determined to make the most of every last second.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. I know, I know, pizza in Japan? But after days of traditional Japanese cuisine, I was craving something familiar with a local twist. It was a delightful change of pace. The pizza was delicious, with a perfectly chewy crust and fresh toppings. Apparently, it's quite popular among locals and travelers alike, and I can see why. It was a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Despite it being February, there was still plenty to see. The greenhouse was a tropical paradise, filled with vibrant colors and exotic plants. I wandered through the serene pathways, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beauty of nature. It was a refreshing escape from the bustling city.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its iconic landmarks, but in the quiet moments of reflection found in its gardens and shrines.

After the gardens, I made my way to Kamigamo Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest Shinto shrines and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The shrine is known for its beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere. As I walked through the grounds, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The history and spirituality of the place were palpable.

I learned that Kamigamo Shrine, along with Shimogamo Shrine, undertakes restorations every twenty-one years, a tradition called shikinen sengū, symbolizing renewal. Although I missed the Kigen-sai festival held earlier this month on February 11th, commemorating Japan's foundation with martial arts and ancient games, the shrine's serene ambiance was captivating enough. The thought of performers in elaborate robes offering prayers for the nation's prosperity painted a vivid picture in my mind.

Next on my itinerary was Shimogamo Shrine, located at the junction of two rivers. This ancient shrine, dating back to the 6th century, is dedicated to Tamayori-hime and her father, Kamo Taketsunomi, figures from Japanese mythology. The shrine grounds were quiet and peaceful. I wandered through the urban forest surrounding the shrine, enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings.

It's fascinating to learn about the shrine's history, with legends dating back to Emperor Jimmu's reign in 658 BC. The deity of Shimogamo Shrine, Kamo Taketsunumi no Mikoto, is even known for transforming into the Yatagarasu, a three-legged bird that guided Emperor Jimmu. It’s amazing to think about the traditions of the shrine lasting for thousands of years.

For lunch, I decided to try Fujiya, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Japanese cuisine. I was eager to immerse myself in the local flavors one last time before leaving Kyoto. The restaurant did not disappoint. The food was exquisite, with delicate flavors and beautiful presentation. It was a culinary experience that I will not soon forget.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to a farewell dinner at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO|Restaurant. The restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored traditional building, once the residence of a famous Japanese painter. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, the perfect setting for a special occasion.

The Italian cuisine was exceptional, with a focus on seasonal ingredients from Kyoto. I opted for the vegan set menu and was blown away by the delicate flavors and creative presentation of each dish. The service was impeccable, and the staff made me feel welcome and pampered.

After dinner, I decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife at Bar K6. Tucked away in a quiet corner, this bar is renowned for its master bartenders and exquisite cocktails. The ambiance was sophisticated and inviting, with a touch of old-world charm. I savored a perfectly crafted cocktail, reflecting on my journey through Kyoto.

I chatted with the bartender, who shared stories about the bar's history and its loyal clientele. It was a delightful way to end my last night in Kyoto, surrounded by good company and expertly mixed drinks. Apparently, the owner also runs a pastry shop called Ghost, known for its liquor-infused cakes. I'll have to check that out next time I'm in town.

As I walked back to Hotel Gimmond Kyoto, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. I had successfully navigated Kyoto as a solo traveler, immersing myself in its culture, history, and cuisine. I had discovered hidden gems, made new friends, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

This trip reminded me of something my grandfather used to say:

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.

I am so happy to have added another rich chapter to my own book, and I hope to inspire you to do the same.
