Day 8: A Kyoto Evening: Geishas, Shrines, and Culinary Delights
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's enchanting Gion district, explore ancient shrines, savor diverse cuisines, and experience the city's vibrant culture.
Kyoto's Timeless Charms: Gion and Beyond
Today was a day of wandering through Kyoto's most iconic locales, a blend of ancient traditions and modern delights. From the enchanting Gion district to the serene Yasaka Shrine and the bustling Pontocho alley, every corner of Kyoto held a new experience. It’s amazing how a city can feel both deeply rooted in history and vibrantly alive at the same time.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Hanasaki Nishikiten. Located near Nishiki Market, the restaurant exuded the charm of an old townhouse, providing a tranquil space amidst the bustling city. The reviews I had read highlighted the restaurant's commitment to using seasonal Kyoto vegetables and high-quality ingredients, which piqued my interest. It was indeed a delightful experience, offering a taste of authentic Kyoto cuisine. The delicate flavors and artful presentation of each dish truly showcased the essence of Japanese culinary artistry.
With a full stomach, I set out to explore Gion, Kyoto's famed geisha district. The narrow, lantern-lit streets were captivating, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of stepping back in time. The traditional wooden machiya houses, with their intricate latticework and understated elegance, created an atmosphere of serene beauty. I kept my eyes peeled, hoping for a glimpse of a geiko or maiko gracefully making their way to an appointment. Although I didn't spot any, the allure of the district was undeniable. I learned that Gion is particularly enchanting at night, when the lanterns are lit and the streets come alive with a magical ambiance.

Next on my itinerary was Yasaka Shrine, a vibrant Shinto shrine located at the eastern end of Gion. Founded in 656, Yasaka Shrine is known for its lively festivals, especially the Gion Matsuri in July. Although February is a quieter time, the shrine still held a sense of spiritual energy and historical significance. I took my time wandering through the grounds, admiring the intricate architecture and the peaceful atmosphere. I discovered that Yasaka Shrine is closely tied to the Gion district, serving as its patron shrine. It was fascinating to learn about the shrine's seasonal events, which are deeply connected to the lives of Kyotoites.

After immersing myself in the serene ambiance of Yasaka Shrine, I headed to Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street for a bit of retail therapy. This bustling covered arcade was a stark contrast to the tranquility of Gion, offering a vibrant mix of shops selling everything from traditional crafts to trendy fashion items. I enjoyed browsing through the various stores, sampling local street food, and soaking up the lively atmosphere. The reviews I had read mentioned the street's convenient location and diverse offerings, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. It was the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs and experience Kyoto's modern side.

As lunchtime approached, I found myself craving something different, and Mezopotamia Kebab House caught my eye. It may seem unusual to have kebab in Japan, but I was intrigued by the positive reviews and the promise of a quick and tasty meal. Located near Nishiki Market, the kebab house was small but inviting, with a friendly staff fluent in multiple languages. I ordered a chicken kebab roll, which was freshly made and bursting with flavor. It was a delightful change of pace from traditional Japanese cuisine, and I appreciated the affordable price and the friendly service.

With my hunger satisfied, I ventured into Pontocho, a narrow alley running along the Kamogawa River. This atmospheric district is known for its high concentration of restaurants and bars, offering a wide range of dining options. I strolled along the cobblestone street, admiring the traditional wooden buildings and the red lanterns that lined the way. Although it was still daytime, I could imagine the alley coming alive at night, with the sounds of laughter and music filling the air. Pontocho is famous for its riverside dining platforms, known as kawayuka, which are set up during the warmer months. Unfortunately, they weren't open in February, but I could still appreciate the beauty of the river and the charming atmosphere of the alley.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO, a vegan restaurant that had garnered rave reviews for its plant-based cuisine. As someone who is increasingly conscious of sustainable living and dietary choices, I was eager to try their innovative dishes. The restaurant's cozy and warmly lit interior created a welcoming ambiance, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. I ordered their signature vegan pancakes, which were light, fluffy, and topped with generous portions of soy ice cream and whipped cream. It was a truly decadent and satisfying meal, proving that vegan food can be both delicious and indulgent.

From the traditional charm of Gion to the spiritual serenity of Yasaka Shrine, the bustling energy of Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, and the culinary delights of Hanasaki Nishikiten, Mezopotamia Kebab House and AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO, every moment had been a feast for the senses. I am looking forward to tomorrow, my last day in Kyoto, where I plan to visit the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Kamigamo Shrine, and Shimogamo Shrine. I might even try to find Bar K6 for a nightcap before heading back to Heidelberg. Kyoto has truly captured my heart, and I know I will carry its timeless charms with me wherever I go.
The temperature in Kyoto in February can be quite chilly, with average temperatures ranging from 41°F to 48°F. It's important to pack warm clothes, including a wool or down coat, gloves, and a scarf. While snow is not uncommon, it rarely accumulates on the ground. The weather is generally cloudy, with occasional rain or snow showers. Despite the cold, Kyoto in February offers a unique charm, with fewer crowds and a chance to experience the city's winter beauty.
Tomorrow marks the final day of my Kyoto adventure. I'm planning a tranquil escape to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, followed by visits to the serene Kamigamo and Shimogamo Shrines. Perhaps I'll cap off the trip with a visit to Bar K6, a highly-regarded spot known for its sophisticated atmosphere. It's bittersweet to think about leaving, but I'm also excited to return home and share my experiences with Lena and Sofia. I'm sure Sofia will be especially thrilled to see the souvenirs I picked up for her at the Shinkyogoku Shopping Street.
