Day 1: Diving into the Art of Naoshima
Today marked the beginning of my solo adventure on Naoshima Island, a place I've long dreamt of visiting. The ferry ride from the mainland was smooth, the sea air invigorating, and the anticipation palpable. This island, known for its unique blend of art, architecture, and natural beauty, promised a journey of reflection and inspiration. As a software engineer deeply invested in sustainable solutions, I was particularly eager to witness how art and nature coexist in such harmony here.
My first stop was the renowned Chichu Art Museum, a place where art and architecture intertwine seamlessly. Designed by Tadao Ando, the museum is largely built underground to minimize its impact on the landscape, a concept that immediately resonated with my passion for sustainability. The museum's use of natural light is simply masterful; it transforms the artworks throughout the day, offering a different perspective with each visit.

Art challenges our relationship with nature.
The Chichu Art Museum houses a small but impressive collection. Monet's Water Lilies were breathtaking, displayed in a room designed to allow natural light to filter in, making the colors dance and shift. It felt as though the paintings were alive, breathing with the rhythm of the island. I spent a considerable amount of time simply sitting in the room, letting the art wash over me, contemplating the interplay between Monet's vision and Ando's architectural genius.
Next, I ventured into the James Turrell exhibit, where light itself is the medium. His installations played with my perception, challenging my understanding of space and form. It was an almost spiritual experience, a meditation on the nature of light and reality. The Walter De Maria installation was equally captivating, a large sphere in a minimalist setting that evoked a sense of timelessness and wonder. It's fascinating how the museum limits visitor numbers, ensuring a more intimate and contemplative experience.
Leaving Chichu, I made my way to the Benesse House Museum, another architectural marvel by Tadao Ando. This museum, which also functions as a hotel, embodies the concept of art, nature, and architecture coexisting in perfect harmony. The views of the Seto Inland Sea from the museum are simply stunning, and the outdoor sculptures scattered around the grounds invite exploration and contemplation.

Inside, the Benesse House Museum boasts a diverse collection of contemporary art. I was particularly drawn to the works that incorporated natural elements, blurring the lines between the art and the environment. The museum's integration of art into every corner of the building, even the guest rooms, creates a fully immersive experience. I spent a good hour wandering through the galleries and outdoor spaces, sketchbook in hand, capturing the essence of each piece and its surroundings.
Of course, no visit to Naoshima would be complete without seeing Yayoi Kusama's Yellow Pumpkin. As I approached the iconic sculpture, perched at the end of a pier, I couldn't help but smile. Its vibrant yellow color and whimsical polka dots stood out against the blue sea and sky, a symbol of the island's playful and innovative spirit. It was a popular spot, with people lining up to take photos, but I managed to find a quiet moment to appreciate its simple beauty and the way it interacts with the surrounding landscape.

Before diving into the art scene, I had a delightful breakfast at APRON CAFE. The cafe's commitment to using local ingredients was evident in every bite, and the cozy atmosphere made it the perfect place to start my day. For lunch, I chose maimai, a charming hamburger cafe known for its delicious burgers made with fresh, local ingredients. The cozy interior, adorned with local artwork, provided a perfect backdrop for a relaxed meal. It was a great spot to recharge after a morning of exploring.

Naoshima is hosting the Setouchi Triennale 2025, adding to the island's vibrant art scene. This festival, held every three years, transforms the Seto Inland Sea into a massive open-air museum. It's an incredible opportunity to experience contemporary art in a unique and breathtaking setting.
Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by how seamlessly Naoshima blends art and nature. The museums are not just spaces to display art; they are works of art in themselves, designed to enhance the visitor's experience and connect them with the surrounding environment. The outdoor sculptures, like the Yellow Pumpkin, become part of the landscape, inviting contemplation and interaction. It's a truly unique and inspiring place, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Art House Project in the Honmura district, visit the Lee Ufan Museum, and see the Red Pumpkin. I might even treat myself to a drink at Bar SARU in the evening. Good night from Naoshima!
