Solo Exploration of Naoshima Island's Art and Culture
Day 4: Discovering Honmura's Soul: Art, History, and Community on Naoshima
Immerse yourself in Naoshima's Honmura district, exploring art houses, local flavors, and the island's unique blend of tradition and modernity.
A Day of Artistic Immersion in Honmura
Today was all about diving deep into the heart of Naoshima's Honmura district, a place where art, history, and daily life intertwine in the most captivating ways. I was eager to explore the Art House Project, wander through the town's traditional streets, and soak in the unique atmosphere that makes this island so special.
My day started with a hearty breakfast at Naoshima Yokocho. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, which was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The restaurant had a cozy, local vibe, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the other patrons while savoring my meal.

With a full stomach, I made my way to the Honmura Lounge & Archive. This place is more than just a ticket office; it's a hub of information and a celebration of the island's artistic spirit. Designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa, the lounge itself is a work of art, blending seamlessly into the traditional townscape. I picked up my tickets for the Art House Project and spent some time browsing the archive, learning about the artists and the history of the project.

The Art House Project is a collection of renovated traditional houses transformed into art spaces. It’s an amazing concept: artists take empty houses scattered throughout the residential area and turn them into works of art, weaving in the history and memories of the buildings. It's a way of sustaining the island's past by reinventing it with art installations.
My first stop was Kadoya, the first house to be completed as part of the Art House Project. This 200-year-old house was restored to its original appearance, and the artwork inside, Tatsuo Miyajima's *Sea of Time '98*, is mesmerizing. The townspeople of Naoshima actually participated in the creation of the work, which I found particularly touching. The use of water and light to create immersive experiences was incredible.

Art isn't just something you look at; it's something you experience, something that becomes a part of you.
Walking through Honmura itself was an experience. The narrow lanes, old wooden houses, and small shrines offer a glimpse into the island's traditional charm. It's a unique atmosphere where contemporary art installations blend with the traditional townscape.
For lunch, I stopped by Tee's DELI GROCERY. This diner is known for its inviting atmosphere and delicious, fresh food. I had a falafel sandwich, which was absolutely delicious. The owner, Tee, is a cool guy who runs the place entirely himself. I took his recommendation and enjoyed the local craft beer with my sandwich.

After lunch, I continued my exploration of the Art House Project. I stumbled upon Walking Ark, an open-air museum showcasing sculptures harmoniously integrated into the natural landscape. The sculptures reflected themes of community, nature and culture.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, I decided to treat myself to a pre-dinner drink at Cin.na.mon. This stylish restaurant and bar near Miyanoura Port has a funky ambiance and serves delicious curried seafood. I enjoyed a refreshing cocktail while soaking in the laid-back atmosphere.

For dinner, I chose Chikurin, a cozy izakaya that perfectly encapsulates the essence of Japanese dining culture. The menu features traditional Japanese dishes made with local ingredients and seasonal flavors. I opted for a sashimi platter and some grilled fish, which were both incredibly fresh and flavorful. The restaurant was filled with locals, and I felt like I was getting an authentic taste of Naoshima.

Walking back to My Lodge Naoshima after dinner, I felt a sense of contentment. Today had been a perfect blend of art, culture, and local flavor. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, with plans to visit Shipyard Works By Shinro Otake, Seaside Gallery, and Miyanoura Gallery 6. I'm also looking forward to checking out Shimacoya, a local shop, and trying some new restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner: Yuunagi, EAT LOCAL 直島食堂, and Gumbo Hut Shioya.

Naoshima is more than just an island; it's an experience that engages all your senses. It's a place where art isn't confined to museums but spills out into the streets, blending seamlessly with daily life. And it’s a place that I am so grateful to experience.
As I prepare for another day of artistic exploration, I'm reminded of something Lena often says: The best journeys are those that challenge our perspectives and deepen our understanding of the world. Tonight, I'll be sure to call her and Sofia to tell them all about my day. I know Sofia would be fascinated by the art and the stories behind it.
