Naoshima's Artistic Heart: A Day in Miyanoura

Today was a day of wandering through the heart of Naoshima, specifically the Miyanoura district, and letting the art and atmosphere seep into my soul. It's amazing how a place can feel both intensely creative and deeply peaceful at the same time. I set out with my camera and sketchbook, ready to capture the essence of this unique island.

The day began, as all good days should, with a hearty breakfast at Yuunagi. It's conveniently located near the ferry terminal, and I was eager to try the local flounder, a Naoshima specialty. It was a simple, satisfying meal that fueled me for the day's adventures. The owner was very kind and the atmosphere was peaceful, a perfect way to start the day.

My first stop was the Shipyard Works by Shinro Otake. This installation is a testament to Otake's genius, transforming remnants of the island's industrial past into captivating works of art. The way he repurposes materials and integrates them into the landscape is truly inspiring. As a software engineer passionate about sustainability, I found myself particularly drawn to the innovative use of discarded objects. The structures against the backdrop of the sea and sky made for some amazing photos. I spent a good hour wandering through the site, sketchbook in hand, trying to capture the textures and forms that resonated with me. It was a powerful reminder of how art can breathe new life into forgotten spaces.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on my list was the Seaside Gallery. Designed by Tadao Ando, the gallery itself is a work of art, seamlessly blending with the coastal landscape. The long, narrow space is flooded with natural light, creating a serene environment for viewing the art. The exhibits, themed around the sea and wind, perfectly complement the surroundings. As I strolled from the Benesse House Museum, I took in the beautiful views of the Seto Inland Sea. The sea breeze was refreshing, and the sound of the waves added to the tranquil atmosphere. The gallery's minimalist design allows the art to speak for itself, encouraging contemplation and reflection. I found myself drawn to the pieces that explored the relationship between nature and human creativity.

After immersing myself in the outdoor works, I decided to grab a quick lunch. I headed to EAT LOCAL 直島食堂, a restaurant that prides itself on using local ingredients. I opted for a seafood dish, eager to taste the flavors of the Seto Inland Sea. The food was fresh and delicious, and the cozy atmosphere made it a perfect spot to recharge before continuing my exploration.

My final stop for the day was Miyanoura Gallery 6. This gallery is housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, a former amusement arcade that was once a popular gathering place for locals. The transformation of this space into an art gallery is a testament to Naoshima's commitment to revitalizing its community through art. Architect Taira Nishizawa has done an amazing job of preserving the original facade while creating a modern exhibition space. Inside, the gallery features rotating exhibits that document various aspects of the region's history and culture. The natural sunlight that filters through the ceiling louvers creates a unique viewing experience. I spent a long time browsing the exhibits, learning about the island's past and present. It was fascinating to see how art can be used to preserve and celebrate local heritage.

Before dinner, I decided to do some shopping. I stopped by Shimacoya, a charming book cafe housed in a 130-year-old traditional Japanese house. It's more than just a cafe; it's also a guest house, a used bookstore, and a variety store. I browsed the shelves, admiring the selection of books on DIY, nature, travel, and design. The cafe also sells local crafts and souvenirs, making it a perfect place to find a unique memento of my trip. I ended up buying a small, handcrafted ceramic piece to remind me of my time on Naoshima. It was so relaxing to sit there and enjoy a coffee while reading about new architecture and sustainable living options. It reminded me of Lena and Sofia and the importance of the work we do.

For dinner, I ventured to Gumbo Hut Shioya. This Cajun restaurant seems like an anomaly on a Japanese art island, but it's a testament to the island's quirky and unexpected nature. The owner, Buddy, is passionate about Southern culture and cuisine, and he's created a warm and welcoming space that feels like a little piece of New Orleans. I ordered the gumbo, of course, and it was delicious – a perfect blend of spice, smokiness, and heat. The walls are adorned with portraits of blues legends, and the music adds to the authentic atmosphere. It was a fun and unexpected culinary experience that perfectly captured the spirit of Naoshima.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to My Lodge Naoshima, my cozy and budget-friendly home base for this solo adventure. The sky was ablaze with color, casting a golden glow over the island. I reflected on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in Naoshima's art and culture. It's a place that challenges you to see the world in new ways, to appreciate the beauty in unexpected places, and to connect with the spirit of creativity that permeates every corner of the island. I am so glad I decided to come alone, as it has given me time to think and reflect on life and the future.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Naoshima's artistic treasures, including the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima, George Rickey's Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, and La forêt des murmures. I'm also looking forward to trying out Cafe Salon Nakaoku for breakfast, Nagomi for lunch, and Restaurant EN for dinner. And perhaps I'll end the day with a drink at Naoshima Hall. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
Naoshima is more than just an island; it's an experience. It's a place where art, nature, and community come together to create something truly special. It's a place that will stay with me long after I've left its shores.
