A Fond Farewell

As my solo journey on Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the harmonious blend of art, architecture, and nature that defines this unique destination. Today was a day of tying up loose ends, revisiting favorite spots, and soaking in the serene atmosphere one last time before heading back to the mainland. It's amazing how a small island can leave such a lasting impression, and I'm eager to share the final moments of my Naoshima adventure with you.

My day began with a comforting breakfast at Akaito Coffee. Just a short walk from Miyanoura Port, this cozy café has become a cherished spot for both visitors and locals. The warm red-brick exterior and nostalgic interior create an inviting atmosphere, and the hand-roasted coffee is the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a slice of their gateau chocolat with a cup of their signature Akaito Blend, savoring the quiet morning before the day's explorations.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Art Island Center. This center serves as a hub for art and research, showcasing the identity and resilience of the islands in the Setouchi region. The Art Island Center's projects, programs, and exhibitions explore the identity and resilience of the islands of the Setouchi region, while using Naoshima's status as an international destination to facilitate conversations about globally significant topics. I spent some time browsing the gallery and bookshop, appreciating the center's commitment to fostering conversations about contemporary society.

Next on my list was the Naoshima Tourism Association. Located a short walk from Miyanoura Port, the association provides valuable information and resources for exploring the island. I picked up a few brochures and maps, double-checking details for my departure and gathering information about future events on the island. The staff were incredibly helpful, offering insights into local culture and hidden gems that I might have missed.

With the morning activities complete, I ventured towards Tsunosaki, a serene scenic spot on the island. This picturesque location is perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in the natural beauty that Japan has to offer. As I wandered along the coastal paths, I was greeted by the gentle sounds of waves lapping against the shore and the refreshing scent of sea air. The artistic spirit of Naoshima is also palpable here, with various installations and sculptures dotting the landscape, inviting contemplation and reflection. I found a peaceful spot to sit and sketch, capturing the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding landscapes.

For lunch, I decided to try Shimacoya, a unique café and guesthouse known for its retro Japanese atmosphere. This charming establishment is more than just a place to grab a coffee; it serves as a guest house, a used book store, and a variety store, making it a unique destination for tourists. I enjoyed a light meal of locally sourced treats while browsing the collection of books, soaking in the cozy and creative ambiance.

In the evening, I chose Nagomi for my final dinner on Naoshima. Located within the Naoshima welfare center, Nagomi offers a taste of community with its hearty Japanese meals and welcoming atmosphere. The communal canteen-like environment encourages social interactions and makes it easy for travelers to connect with locals over shared tables. I savored a delicious set meal, appreciating the fresh, local ingredients and the warm hospitality of the staff.

To cap off my Naoshima adventure, I decided to visit BAR Queen's-Q Naoshima for a nightcap. This intimate bar is known for its exceptional cocktails and cozy atmosphere. The bartender crafts cocktails with pure passion, incorporating Japanese ingredients and unique touches. I enjoyed a superb espresso martini, savoring the jazz music and the friendly ambiance. It was the perfect way to celebrate the end of an incredible journey.

As I prepare to leave Naoshima tomorrow, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences and insights gained during my solo exploration. The island's art, nature, and serene atmosphere have provided a much-needed respite from the demands of my daily life. As a software engineer passionate about sustainable solutions, I am particularly inspired by how Naoshima has harmoniously integrated art and nature, creating a model for sustainable tourism and cultural preservation.

Naoshima has not only enriched my understanding of art and architecture but also deepened my appreciation for the importance of community and environmental stewardship. I leave with a renewed sense of purpose, eager to apply the lessons learned on this enchanting island to my work and personal life.

Thank you for joining me on this incredible journey. Until next time, keep exploring, keep creating, and keep seeking inspiration in the world around you. Tomorrow, I head back to the mainland, carrying with me the memories and lessons of Naoshima Island.

The island’s blend of art, tranquility, and community spirit has left an indelible mark on my soul. It’s a place I know I’ll return to someday, perhaps with Lena and Sofia in tow, to share the magic of Naoshima with my family. For now, though, it’s time to pack my bags and prepare for the journey back to Heidelberg, carrying with me the inspiration and serenity I found on this remarkable art island. I'll certainly miss the sunsets over the Seto Inland Sea, the quiet mornings with a cup of Akaito coffee, and the friendly faces I encountered along the way. But I also know that the spirit of Naoshima will stay with me, guiding my work and inspiring my creativity in the days and weeks to come. Farewell, Naoshima, until we meet again.
