Embracing Tranquility: A Day Away from the Crowds

Today, I decided to venture off the beaten path and explore some of Naoshima's lesser-known treasures. While the museums are undoubtedly the stars of this island, I was eager to discover the quieter corners and see what unexpected delights they held. It turned out to be a day of serene landscapes, quirky art, and a deeper connection with the island's natural beauty.

The forecast predicted another hot day, with temperatures hovering around 30°C. I made sure to apply sunscreen and grab my trusty reusable water bottle before setting off. My first stop was Danyama, an observation deck offering panoramic views of the island and the Seto Inland Sea.

Danyama: A Breathtaking Start

The walk to Danyama was a pleasant surprise. Leaving the main road, I found myself on a narrow path winding through lush greenery. The air was filled with the chirping of cicadas, and the sunlight filtered through the trees, creating dappled patterns on the ground. As I climbed higher, glimpses of the sea peeked through the foliage, building anticipation for the view ahead.

Reaching the observation deck, I was immediately rewarded with a vista that stretched across the sparkling waters to neighboring islands. The coastline curved gently, dotted with small fishing boats and the occasional ferry gliding across the horizon. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of pine and sea salt.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

I spent a good while simply soaking in the scenery, sketching in my notebook, and letting the tranquility wash over me. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a world away from the bustling crowds at the museums. As I sat there, I thought about Lena and Sofia back in Heidelberg, and how much they would have loved this view. I made a mental note to bring them here someday.

Next on my list was Yokobou Park, described as a serene retreat for relaxation and nature exploration. After Danyama's panoramic grandeur, I was curious to see what this more intimate natural space had to offer.

Yokobou Park turned out to be a delightful contrast. Tucked away in a valley, it felt like a hidden sanctuary. The park featured a network of walking trails that meandered through a dense forest of bamboo and Japanese maple trees. Sunlight streamed through the canopy, casting a soft, ethereal glow on the moss-covered ground.

I followed one of the trails, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the sounds of nature. Small streams trickled through the park, their gentle murmur adding to the sense of serenity. I found a secluded bench overlooking a small pond and sat for a while, simply observing the dragonflies flitting across the water's surface.

The park was virtually empty, save for a few locals taking their morning stroll. It was a welcome change from the more crowded attractions on the island, a place where I could truly connect with nature and find a sense of inner peace.

Before venturing further, I decided to have breakfast at Café Ippo. Located near Minamidera, this charming café is also a guesthouse, radiating a cozy, traditional Japanese vibe. It felt like stepping into someone's home, greeted by a friendly couple who made me feel instantly welcome.

I ordered the breakfast set, a simple yet delicious meal of grilled fish, rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. The ingredients were fresh and locally sourced, and the flavors were comforting and authentic. As I ate, I chatted with the owners, who shared stories about the island and its art scene. They recommended a few hidden spots to explore, which I added to my list.

Café Ippo was more than just a place to eat; it was a cultural hub where I could immerse myself in the local lifestyle. It's these small, authentic experiences that make traveling so rewarding.

For lunch, I headed to Ishii Shouten, a charming udon noodle shop known for its authentic handmade noodles. The aroma of freshly made udon filled the air as I stepped inside, creating an inviting atmosphere. I ordered a bowl of their classic hot broth udon, and it was a true delight.

The noodles were perfectly chewy, and the broth was rich and flavorful. It was a satisfying and reasonably priced meal, a welcome break from exploring the island's art installations.

In the afternoon, I decided to take a short ferry trip to Uno Port to see Chinu – The Black Sea Bream of Uno. This unique art installation, created by the Yodogawa Technique, uses recycled materials to construct a giant fish sculpture.

The sculpture is made from all sorts of discarded items, from plastic bottles and toys to fishing nets and other marine debris. It's a powerful statement about the impact of waste on the ocean and the importance of recycling and conservation.

As I walked around the sculpture, I was struck by the creativity and ingenuity of the artists. They had transformed trash into a beautiful and thought-provoking work of art, raising awareness about environmental issues in a visually compelling way.

The menu featured dishes that showcased the flavors of the Setouchi region, with an emphasis on fresh seafood and locally grown produce. I opted for the Setouchi slow-cooked set course, a multi-course meal that highlighted the culinary traditions of the area.

Each dish was a work of art in itself, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef had masterfully combined French techniques with Japanese ingredients, creating a harmonious blend of tastes and textures. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was elegant yet relaxed. It was the perfect way to end my day of exploration on Naoshima.

As I savored the last bite of my dessert, I reflected on the day's experiences. I had discovered a different side of Naoshima, one that was quieter, more intimate, and deeply connected to nature. I had found serenity in the landscapes, inspiration in the art, and warmth in the local community.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Art Island Center and the Naoshima Tourism Association to gather more information about the island's cultural initiatives. I'm also hoping to explore Tsunosaki, a coastal area known for its rugged beauty. And, if time permits, I might just squeeze in a visit to BAR Queen's-Q Naoshima for a nightcap.

Naoshima continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It's a place where art and life intertwine, where beauty can be found in the most unexpected places, and where the simple act of exploration can lead to profound discoveries.
