Cultural Immersion in Kyoto: A Journey Through Tradition and Modernity
Day 3: Kyoto's Royal Roots: Exploring Palaces and Gardens
Wander through Nijō Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Gyoen Garden, uncovering centuries of history and serene beauty with Oliver and Greta.
A Day Immersed in Kyoto's Imperial History
Today, Greta and I dove deep into the heart of Kyoto's imperial past. It's amazing how much history is packed into this one city, and we were excited to explore some of its most significant landmarks. From majestic castles to serene gardens, today was a true feast for the senses and a journey back in time.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. It was a great way to fuel up before a day of exploring. I went with a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Greta opted for something a little more familiar. The service was impeccable, and the food was delicious. It set a perfect tone for the adventures that lay ahead.
Stepping Back in Time at Nijō Castle
Our first stop was Nijō Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as the Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa shoguns. As we approached the castle, the sheer scale of the fortifications was immediately impressive. The castle is surrounded by imposing stone walls and deep moats, a testament to its defensive purpose. Entering through the grand gates, we were transported back to the Edo period. The crisp winter air added to the atmosphere, making it easy to imagine what life must have been like for the shoguns and their court.

The Ninomaru Palace, the main attraction within the castle grounds, is a stunning example of feudal-era architecture. We wandered through the various rooms, each meticulously preserved with beautiful tatami mats and ornate wall paintings. The famous 'nightingale floors,' designed to chirp underfoot to alert the occupants to intruders, were a fascinating detail. Greta was particularly intrigued by the Kuroshoin and Shiroshoin, the shogun's quarters, imagining the private moments and important decisions that must have taken place within those walls.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and shrines, but in the stories etched into its very stones.
The gardens surrounding the Ninomaru Palace were equally captivating. Despite the winter chill, the landscape was serene and meticulously maintained. Ornamental stones, manicured pine trees, and a large pond created a tranquil oasis. We took our time strolling through the gardens, admiring the artistry and attention to detail that went into their design.
A Royal Stroll Through the Kyoto Imperial Palace
Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the former residence of Japan's imperial family until 1868. The palace is located within the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a vast and beautiful park in the heart of the city. As we walked through the park towards the palace, we passed locals jogging, families picnicking, and tourists snapping photos. It was a vibrant scene, showcasing how this historical space continues to be a vital part of modern Kyoto life.

The Kyoto Imperial Palace is open to the public, and we were able to explore the expansive grounds and admire the restored buildings from the outside. The Shishinden, the Hall for State Ceremonies, was particularly impressive, with its intricate carvings and vibrant wall paintings. Although we couldn't enter the buildings, just being able to walk the grounds and imagine the emperors who once resided here was a special experience.
We learned that in 1868, the order to restore Imperial Rule was given in the Kogosho, the Court Room. It's incredible to think about the pivotal moments in Japanese history that unfolded within these very walls. The palace provided a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Japan's emperors and the traditions that shaped their rule.
Finding Serenity in Kyoto Gyoen National Garden
After exploring the Imperial Palace, we took a leisurely stroll through the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. This expansive park is a green oasis in the middle of the city, offering a peaceful escape from the urban bustle. Even in January, the garden had its own unique charm. While the famous cherry blossoms were still months away, we discovered the early signs of plum blossoms, their delicate fragrance filling the air. I was surprised to learn that the plum blossom season here extends from mid-January to mid-March. The garden boasts over 200 plum trees, and I made a mental note to visit again later in the season to see them in full bloom.

As we wandered through the garden, we came across the remnants of other imperial residences and historic sites. It was fascinating to see how the park incorporated these elements, creating a blend of natural beauty and historical significance. We walked through Haha-to-Ko-no-Mori Forest, imagining how stunning the fall foliage must be. I am adding it to my list of places to revisit if we ever come back during autumn.
A Culinary Delight at Hafuu
By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We headed to Hafuu for a well-deserved meal. This restaurant is known for its exquisite meat dishes, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. Greta and I both opted for the Wagyu beef, which was cooked to perfection and melted in our mouths. The restaurant's ambiance was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot to relax and refuel after a morning of exploring.

I chose the Wagyu sirloin steak, while Greta decided on the beef cutlet. Both were exceptional, and we savored every bite. We also tried the Katsu sandwich, which was rumored to be a celebrity favorite, and it was easy to see why. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the bread was perfectly crisp. It was a truly memorable culinary experience.
Evening Indulgence at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO
As evening approached, we made our way to THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO for dinner. This restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored traditional building, once the residence of a renowned Japanese painter. The setting was stunning, with a serene garden and elegant interior. The restaurant offers Italian cuisine with a focus on seasonal ingredients, and we were excited to try their creations.

We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a variety of exquisite dishes. The presentation was impeccable, and each course was a work of art. The flavors were complex and nuanced, showcasing the chef's skill and creativity. The service was attentive and personalized, making us feel truly pampered.
Greta particularly enjoyed the pasta with seasonal vegetables, while I was impressed by the perfectly cooked fish. The dessert, a delicate creation of chocolate and fruit, was the perfect ending to a memorable meal. The whole experience felt like a luxurious treat, a perfect way to end a day of exploring Kyoto's imperial history.
Nightcap at Bar K6
To cap off the evening, we decided to visit Bar K6, a renowned establishment known for its sophisticated ambiance and expertly crafted cocktails. The bar was cozy and intimate, with a dimly lit interior and a well-stocked bar. The bartenders were true professionals, creating unique and delicious drinks tailored to our preferences.

Greta ordered a classic gin and tonic, while I opted for a whiskey-based cocktail. Both were expertly made and beautifully presented. The bar had a relaxed and refined atmosphere, making it a perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.
As we walked back to our Ryokan, we talked about how much we had experienced in just one day. From the grandeur of Nijō Castle to the serenity of Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, and the culinary delights of Hafuu and THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, it was a day that will stay with us for a long time. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Ryoan-ji (famous for its rock garden), and Ninna-ji Temple. I am looking forward to more of Kyoto's beauty and history.
