Whispers in the Bamboo

Today, Greta and I ventured into the enchanting world of Arashiyama. It's a place I had only dreamed of, filled with towering bamboo stalks, serene temples, and playful monkeys. Away from the tech and the familiar comforts of Heidelberg, I found myself lost in the captivating beauty of Kyoto, a world where nature and culture intertwine seamlessly. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and unforgettable moments, a true feast for the senses.

Our day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. I must admit, finding a fully vegan place in Kyoto was a pleasant surprise. I opted for the heavenly pancakes. Greta went for the breakfast pancakes with fruits. They were light, fluffy, and the perfect way to fuel up for our day of adventures. I am not usually a pancake person, but these were delicious.

With our bellies full, we made our way to the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. As we stepped into the grove, I was immediately struck by the sheer height of the bamboo stalks, and the muted light filtering through them. It felt like entering another world, a cathedral of nature. The winter air was crisp, and the ground was slightly frosted, adding to the ethereal atmosphere. The sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the gentle rustling of the bamboo in the breeze. It was incredibly peaceful, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Greta, with her architect's eye, was fascinated by the patterns and textures of the bamboo, snapping photos from every angle.

In the heart of Arashiyama, nature whispers its secrets, inviting you to pause, breathe, and connect with the world around you.

After wandering through the bamboo forest, we made our way to Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just outside the grove. The temple is renowned for its exquisite Zen garden, and I was eager to experience its tranquility. As we entered the garden, I was immediately struck by its serene beauty. The carefully raked gravel, the moss-covered stones, and the meticulously pruned trees created a sense of harmony and balance. Although it's January, and the vibrant colours of spring and autumn were absent, the monochromatic beauty of the snow-kissed garden held its own unique charm. It was easy to see why this garden is considered one of the finest examples of Japanese garden design.

We spent some time wandering through the garden, taking in the peaceful atmosphere. Greta was particularly taken with the Sogen Pond Garden, with its snow-covered rocks and reflections of the Arashiyama mountains. I found myself drawn to the Dharma Hall, where a large painting of a cloud dragon adorns the ceiling. The dragon's eyes are rendered in such a way that they seem to follow you, no matter where you stand in the building. It's an impressive sight, symbolizing the all-seeing eyes with which the dragon protects Buddhism.

Leaving the temple, we decided to grab lunch. We found ourselves at Arash's Kitchen, a Persian and Indian Halal restaurant. I was intrigued by the fusion of flavours, and we were both craving something different from the traditional Japanese cuisine we'd been eating. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the aroma of spices filled the air. We ordered a selection of dishes to share, including kebabs, biryani, and naan bread. The food was delicious, a burst of flavours that transported me back to my travels in the Middle East. It was a welcome change of pace, and we left feeling satisfied and energized.

Our final stop for the day was the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. I had heard mixed reviews about the park, with some people finding it touristy and others praising it as a unique experience. As we started the climb up the mountain, I began to understand why. The path was steep and winding, and the air was thin. It was a bit of a workout, but the views along the way were stunning. We could see the entire city of Kyoto spread out before us, a tapestry of temples, gardens, and modern buildings.

After about a 30-minute hike, we finally reached the top of the mountain and entered the monkey park. And there they were: Japanese Macaques, also known as snow monkeys, roaming freely among the visitors. I was initially a bit apprehensive, having never been so close to wild monkeys before. But they seemed harmless enough, mostly interested in finding food and grooming each other. We bought some monkey food (peanuts and apples) and entered the feeding area, a small hut where visitors can safely feed the monkeys through a wire mesh. It was quite an experience to have these creatures reaching for food right in front of us. Greta, who is always up for a bit of fun, was particularly amused by the monkeys' antics, laughing as they snatched peanuts from her hand.

We spent some time observing the monkeys, watching them play, groom, and interact with each other. It was fascinating to see their social dynamics, their hierarchy, and their individual personalities. I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection with these creatures, a reminder that we are all part of the same web of life. The views from the monkey park were also incredible, offering a panoramic perspective of Kyoto and the surrounding mountains. It was the perfect way to end our day in Arashiyama, a moment of awe and appreciation for the beauty of nature.

Before heading back to our ryokan, we stopped by Souvenir Kyoto. I am not much of a shopper, but Greta wanted to get a few things. She picked up some small trinkets, traditional crafts, and a few postcards to send to our families back home. I ended up buying a small Daruma doll, a traditional Japanese symbol of perseverance and good luck. I thought it would be a nice reminder of our time in Kyoto, a symbol of the challenges we've overcome and the adventures that lie ahead.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to something special. We made a reservation at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi, a steak restaurant known for its high-quality meat and skilled chefs. The restaurant was located along the Takase River, and the atmosphere was intimate and relaxed. All the seats were counter seats, and we had a perfect view of the chef preparing our meal. We ordered a selection of grilled dishes, including Kobe beef and Wagyu steak. The meat was cooked to perfection, tender, juicy, and full of flavour. It was a truly memorable meal, a celebration of our day of exploration and discovery.

As we walked back to our ryokan, the city lights twinkled around us. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared today. Arashiyama had exceeded all my expectations, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and unforgettable moments. It was a day that will stay with me long after we leave Kyoto, a reminder of the power of travel to open our minds, expand our horizons, and connect us with the world around us. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we will explore Nijo Castle, the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. I think I will enjoy seeing more of the historical and political heart of this amazing city.

Back at the Kyoto Watazen Ryokan, I realized I had forgotten to pack an adapter for the Japanese outlets! Luckily, the ryokan staff were able to provide one. I also wished I had brought a light jacket, as the evenings can get quite cool. But these were minor inconveniences, easily forgotten in the face of the day's adventures. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, thinking about the whispers of the bamboo forest and the playful antics of the monkeys. Kyoto, you have truly captured my heart.
