First Impressions: Kyoto's Embrace

After a long journey from Germany, Greta and I finally arrived in Kyoto, ready to immerse ourselves in the heart of Japan's cultural heritage. The crisp January air was a refreshing change, and the city welcomed us with a unique blend of ancient traditions and modern vibrancy. Our first day was packed with iconic sights and culinary delights, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure.

Our day began with an early start and a hearty breakfast at Kizahashi, nestled within The Thousand Kyoto hotel. The traditional Japanese garden surrounding the restaurant created a serene atmosphere as we enjoyed a delicious spread of local delicacies. I particularly enjoyed the blend of traditional and modern elements in the dishes, a perfect introduction to Kyoto's culinary scene.

Fushimi Inari: A Thousand Gates to Wonder

Our first stop was the breathtaking Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountainside. The sheer scale of the shrine was astounding, and as we walked through the seemingly endless tunnel of gates, I felt a sense of awe and wonder. The contrast of the bright red against the winter landscape was striking, creating a truly magical experience. Despite the many visitors, there was a sense of peace and tranquility as we made our way higher up the mountain. I managed to snap some photos, hoping to capture the essence of this incredible place. Greta was fascinated by the small fox statues, each with a unique expression, that lined the paths. We learned that foxes are considered messengers of Inari, the god of rice, and are revered throughout the shrine.

Kiyomizu-dera: A Panoramic Vista

Next on our list was Kiyomizu-dera, a temple perched on a hillside offering stunning panoramic views of Kyoto. The temple's wooden stage, constructed without the use of nails, was an architectural marvel. Standing on the stage, we took in the breathtaking vista of the city below, a sprawling tapestry of traditional houses and modern buildings. The winter air was crisp and clear, making the view even more spectacular. We even saw some visitors dressed in traditional kimonos, adding to the charm of the scene. I also braved the Otowa Waterfall, where you can drink from three separate streams, each said to grant a different benefit: longevity, success in studies, or a good love life. I chose the longevity stream, hoping for many more adventures with Greta.

Sannenzaka: A Stroll Through History

From Kiyomizu-dera, we wandered down to Sannenzaka, a charming historic street lined with traditional shops and tea houses. The atmosphere was enchanting, and it felt like stepping back in time as we strolled along the cobblestone paths. We browsed the shops, admiring the handcrafted goods and local delicacies. Greta was particularly drawn to the intricate pottery and lacquerware, while I was fascinated by the traditional sweets and snacks. We stopped at a tea house for a warm cup of matcha and a traditional sweet, savoring the flavors and soaking in the ambiance of this historic street. We were careful as we walked, remembering the local superstition that a fall on Sannenzaka brings bad luck!

A Culinary Journey: From Oden to Cocktails

As evening approached, we made our way to Yasakadori Enraku for a delightful lunch. The restaurant specialized in Oden, a traditional Japanese hotpot dish. The broth was light yet deeply flavorful, and the ingredients were fresh and delicious. It was the perfect way to warm up after a day of exploring in the winter air. The elegant atmosphere of the restaurant added to the experience, making it a truly memorable meal.

For dinner, we had reservations at Kikunoi Roan, a renowned restaurant known for its exquisite Kaiseki cuisine. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing the seasonal flavors of Kyoto with impeccable presentation. The chef's attention to detail was remarkable, and every bite was a delight. It was an unforgettable culinary experience that truly captured the essence of Japanese fine dining. The inspiration for the restaurant's name, taken from a Zen saying “Meirekireki rododo”, resonated with me, encouraging a sincere and confident approach to new experiences, unrestrained by tradition.

To end our first day in Kyoto, we decided to experience the city's nightlife with a visit to L'Escamoteur, a unique bar known for its creative cocktails and entertaining performances. The bartender, a charismatic Frenchman, crafted inventive drinks while performing magic tricks and engaging with the audience. The atmosphere was lively and fun, providing a perfect end to a day filled with cultural immersion and exploration. Greta was particularly impressed by the bartender's skill and showmanship, and we both enjoyed the unique and memorable experience.

Reflections and Anticipation

As we walked back to our ryokan, the Kyoto Watazen Ryokan, I reflected on the incredible day we had experienced. From the awe-inspiring Fushimi Inari Shrine to the panoramic views from Kiyomizu-dera, and the enchanting streets of Sannenzaka, Kyoto had already captured our hearts. The culinary delights, from the comforting Oden to the exquisite Kaiseki, had tantalized our taste buds. And the lively atmosphere of L'Escamoteur had provided a perfect end to a day of cultural immersion.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, visit the Tenryu-ji Temple, and perhaps even brave the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO for breakfast and Arash's Kitchen for lunch. Before dinner at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi, we might even pick up a souvenir at Souvenir Kyoto.

Kyoto has so much to offer, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring. I am especially grateful to share these experiences with Greta, whose enthusiasm and curiosity make every moment even more special. It's moments like these that remind me why we embarked on this journey in the first place – to explore new cultures, create lasting memories, and deepen our connection with each other. As we settle into our cozy ryokan, I'm filled with anticipation for the days ahead, eager to discover more of Kyoto's timeless charm and hidden treasures.

It’s safe to say that Kyoto has already exceeded our expectations, and I can't wait to share more of our journey with you all. Stay tuned for more updates from this incredible city!
