Echoes of Empires: Exploring Marrakech's Royal Legacy

Today, Marrakech revealed more of its historical layers, and it was nothing short of captivating. From the serene Saadian Tombs to the imposing ruins of El Badi Palace and the tranquil Ménara Gardens, it felt like stepping back in time to wander through the remnants of empires. I was eager to delve into the stories etched in stone and to share them with you all.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bazaar Cafe. The atmosphere was buzzing with early risers and the aroma of fresh coffee. After a quick bite, we set off to explore the Saadian Tombs. It’s amazing to think that these incredible tombs were hidden away for centuries, only rediscovered in 1917. Can you imagine stumbling upon such a treasure? It’s like something straight out of an adventure novel! The intricate details and the sheer artistry of the mausoleums were breathtaking. The Chamber of the Twelve Columns, where Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur is buried, was particularly stunning, with its detailed carvings and the play of light across the marble. It's a testament to the opulence of the Saadian dynasty. Greta would have loved the tilework; it’s exactly the kind of thing she appreciates in architecture.

Next on our list was the El Badi Palace, or what remains of it. Built in the late 16th century to celebrate a military victory, the palace was once a sprawling complex of lavish gardens, opulent courtyards, and hundreds of rooms adorned with gold, turquoise, and crystal. Today, it’s mostly ruins, but even in its dilapidated state, you can sense the grandeur it once possessed. As I walked through the expansive courtyard, I imagined what life must have been like during its heyday, with musicians playing, dancers performing, and dignitaries from around the world gathering to pay homage to the Sultan. It’s fascinating to think that this palace, which took nearly 25 years to complete, was stripped of its treasures just a century later by a subsequent ruler. The cycle of rise and fall is so evident here. The storks nesting atop the walls added a surreal touch to the scene.

For lunch, we ventured to Un déjeuner a Marrakech, a charming spot known for its delightful French-inspired cuisine. After days of tagines and couscous, it was a welcome change to enjoy a lighter meal with a French twist. The rooftop terrace offered a lovely view of the Medina, and the gentle breeze made it the perfect setting to relax and recharge before our next adventure. It was a great spot to chat with my friends about our morning. I made sure to take some photos to show Greta later; she’s always looking for new restaurant ideas for our next trip.

Our afternoon was spent at the serene Ménara Gardens. Located a bit outside the city center, the gardens offer a tranquil escape from the bustling Medina. As we approached, the iconic image of the pavilion against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains came into view, just like on the postcards. The gardens were created in the 12th century and feature a large reflecting pool surrounded by olive groves. It’s a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, and there was a relaxed, convivial atmosphere as families strolled along the paths and couples sat under the olive trees. I found a quiet spot to sit and reflect on the day's experiences, watching the sun cast long shadows across the water. It’s moments like these that make traveling so rewarding. I remembered reading about the GITEX Africa tech fair scheduled to take place here next year, a blend of ancient serenity and modern innovation.

Before heading back to the hostel, we stopped by Latifshop Moroccan Artisanat & déco. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for Greta and our families back home. The shop was filled with beautiful handcrafted items, from colorful ceramics to intricate metalwork and vibrant textiles. I ended up buying a beautiful ceramic bowl and a few small trinkets, hoping they would capture the essence of Marrakech. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and it felt good to know that my purchases were contributing to the local economy.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to SKY-BAR for a pre-dinner drink. Perched high above the city, the bar offered stunning panoramic views of Marrakech. Sipping on a refreshing cocktail, we watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, with the city lights twinkling below. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Dinner tonight was at Dar Moha, a renowned restaurant known for its modern take on traditional Moroccan cuisine. The setting was magical, with tables arranged around a central courtyard and a tranquil ambiance. Chef Moha's innovative dishes were a feast for the senses, each plate a work of art. The flavors were bold and complex, showcasing the best of Moroccan culinary heritage. It was a truly memorable dining experience, and I savored every bite.

Tomorrow, we're planning to venture a bit further afield with Palmeraie Quad & Buggy Tours and Agafay Desert. A change of pace is certainly in order, and I’m excited to see what adventures await us beyond the city walls. We’ll be having breakfast at L'Mdina Marrakech before heading off for a day of thrills. I'm particularly looking forward to exploring the Agafay Desert, which I hear is a stunning, rocky landscape that offers a different perspective on Morocco. We’ll wrap up the day with dinner at Naranj Libanese, a highly recommended spot for Lebanese cuisine.

Today was a day of contrasts, from the solemnity of the tombs to the grandeur of the palace and the tranquility of the gardens. Marrakech continues to surprise and enchant me with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. It’s a city that truly captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression. I’m so grateful to be sharing this adventure with my friends, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. Until then, stay tuned and keep exploring!

Oh, and I really need to remember to buy a travel adapter. My phone is constantly running out of battery, and it's a pain to keep borrowing one from my friends! It's definitely going on my list of essentials for the rest of the trip.

I’m also hoping to find some time to check out some local events. I noticed there's a cooking class with Chef Najla and other cooking-related events happening. Maybe I can pick up some new skills to impress Greta back in Heidelberg! Also, I saw that GITEX Africa, a major tech fair, will be in Marrakech next year. It's exciting to see such a blend of ancient history and modern innovation in this city. I will also keep an eye for the ON MARCHE Festival, in case I can extend my stay, as I'm a big fan of contemporary dance.

The call to prayer echoes in the distance. Time to rest.
