Marrakech Unveiled: A Day of Discovery

Today was one of those days where Marrakech truly revealed its layers. It felt like stepping back in time and then snapping back to the present with a delicious cocktail in hand. Exploring the city with friends always adds an extra layer of fun, and today was no exception. It was a day packed with history, art, and a little bit of shopping, perfectly capturing the essence of this vibrant city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bakchich Cafe. The aroma of Moroccan spices filled the air, and the cafe buzzed with the energy of locals and tourists alike. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast – a tagine with eggs and some local bread. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The cafe's proximity to Djemaa el Fna made it a convenient starting point, and the vegan options available ensured everyone in our group found something to enjoy. I made a mental note to try their vegan couscous next time!

From there, we ventured to the Bahia Palace. The name 'Bahia' translates to 'brilliance', and it certainly lived up to its name. As we wandered through the palace, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate details of the architecture. The palace, built in the late 19th century, showcased the grandeur of Moroccan craftsmanship. The history of the Bahia Palace is fascinating. Originally built by Si Moussa, grand vizier of the Sultan, in the 1860s, it was later expanded by his son, Ba Ahmed. The ambition behind its creation was evident in every corner, from the stunning stuccos to the lush gardens. I learned that the Cour d'Honneur, with its Italian Carrara marble floor, was once converted into a harem by Bou Ahmed. It's incredible to think that this palace housed his four wives and numerous concubines. Walking through the rooms, I could almost hear the echoes of the past, the whispers of the people who once lived and loved within these walls. The intricate marquetry, plasterwork, and zouak (painted wood) were breathtaking. It was easy to get lost in the beauty and history of this place.

The beauty of Marrakech lies not just in its monuments, but in the vibrant life that pulses through its ancient heart.

Next on our list was the Madrasa Ben Youssef, a historic Islamic college. This architectural treasure, nestled in the heart of the Medina, was founded in the 14th century and expanded in the 16th century. As we stepped inside, we were immediately transported to a different era. The Ben Youssef Madrasa has served as an intellectual hub for centuries, attracting students from all over the Muslim world. The refined zellige tiles, with their geometric and floral motifs, were a sight to behold. The intricately carved cedar wood doors and ceilings revealed the artistic precision of the time. I was particularly drawn to the central courtyard, a serene space that once fostered exchanges between students, teachers, and thinkers. It’s amazing to think that this madrasa, once the largest in the Maghreb, accommodated over 800 students. The student rooms, though modest, evoked a sense of humility and dedication to learning. The Madrasa Ben Youssef embodies the cultural and religious history of Morocco, a testament to the intellectual fervor of its time.

After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to explore the House of Photography in Marrakech. This museum, opened in 2009, showcases the extraordinary diversity of Morocco through the lens of both anonymous and famous photographers. The photographs, dating from 1870 to 1960, offered a unique perspective on Moroccan life. We saw documentary photos, art photos, street scenes, and portraits, each telling a story of a Morocco long past. I was particularly moved by the images of Berber culture and the landscapes of the country. The House of Photography isn't just a museum; it's a research center and an educational venue. It’s a place where teachers and students can learn about the history and heritage of Morocco. The museum's collection includes photographs, glass plates, postcards, and documentaries, providing a comprehensive view of Morocco's past. The temporary exhibitions added another layer of depth to the experience. On this day, the exhibits included Moroccan silks from 1922 and a collection titled 'May of the photo – My picture'. It was fascinating to see how different photographers captured the essence of Marrakech and its people. The Maison de la Photographie is more than just a museum; it's a journey through time, offering a glimpse into the soul of Morocco.

After a day of cultural immersion, we were ready for some retail therapy. We headed to 33 RUE MAJORELLE, a concept store located near the Jardin Majorelle. This chic and stylish store offers a curated selection of Moroccan fashion, jewelry, furniture, and accessories. It's the perfect place to find unique souvenirs and gifts. As someone who appreciates design and craftsmanship, I was immediately drawn to the store's aesthetic. The collections are regularly updated, ensuring there's always something new to discover. I ended up buying a beautiful Berber rug for our living room in Heidelberg. It was a bit of a splurge, but I knew it would be a reminder of our trip to Marrakech. The store is more than just a shopping destination; it's a celebration of Moroccan creativity and style. I also found some lovely skincare products made with local ingredients, perfect for Greta. I know she’ll appreciate the thoughtful gift.

With our shopping bags in tow, we decided it was time for a late lunch at Dar Cherifa. Finding it was an adventure in itself, as we navigated through the maze-like streets of the Medina. But once we arrived, we were immediately captivated by its beauty. Dar Cherifa is a 500-year-old riad that has been beautifully restored. It's considered the oldest riad in Marrakech, dating back to the Saadian period. The candle-lit courtyard, surrounded by orange pillars and intricate archways, created a romantic and exotic atmosphere. The food was delicious. I opted for a traditional Moroccan tagine, while others in our group tried the couscous and the vegetarian options. Everyone raved about their meals. The flavors were authentic and the presentation was impeccable. I learned that Dar Cherifa uses organic ingredients and offers cooking classes, which I found particularly interesting. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in Moroccan culture and cuisine. After lunch, we were allowed to go up to the terrace for a post-drink. The view of the ancient medina was breathtaking. It was the perfect way to end our visit to Dar Cherifa.

As evening approached, we made our way to Dar Yacout for dinner. This restaurant is known for its enchanting setting and traditional Moroccan cuisine. The evening began with a visit to the rooftop terrace, where we enjoyed drinks and panoramic views of Marrakech. Then, we were led to a sumptuous room with a rose petal-covered fountain and live musicians. The ambiance was magical. The menu at Dar Yacout is a pre-set four-course affair. We started with a variety of Moroccan salads, followed by chicken with olives, lamb and couscous, and a selection of desserts. The portions were incredibly generous, and the flavors were rich and authentic. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel like royalty. I was particularly impressed by the decor, a striking mix of traditional and bizarre elements. The flowering columns and candy-striped fireplaces added to the restaurant's unique charm. Dar Yacout is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in Moroccan culture and cuisine in a setting fit for royalty. After dinner, we lingered on the rooftop terrace, savoring the last moments of our evening. The city lights twinkled below, and the air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter.

To cap off our day, we decided to visit BAROMETRE COCKTAILS in Marrakech. This speakeasy-style bar is known for its creative cocktails and enjoyable atmosphere. Finding it was a bit of an adventure, as it's located down a back street in Gueliz. But once we stepped inside, we were immediately transported to a different world. The bar has a speakeasy atmosphere, with a cozy cocktail bar and a separate dining area. The decor is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century pharmacy, adding to its unique charm. The cocktails at BAROMETRE are truly works of art. The bartenders create innovative concoctions that are both visually stunning and delicious. I tried a chocolate frappe which was amazing! The service was excellent, and the staff made us feel welcome. It was the perfect way to end our day in Marrakech.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Marrakech is a city that truly captivates the senses. From the historical palaces to the vibrant markets, there's something for everyone. And exploring it with friends makes it all the more special. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting Jardin Majorelle, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, and Anima Garden. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of today and dream of the flavors, sights, and sounds of Marrakech.

I'm particularly excited about visiting Jardin Majorelle tomorrow. I’ve heard so much about its vibrant blue hues and exotic plants. And as a fan of Yves Saint Laurent, I'm eager to explore the museum dedicated to his life and work. We will have breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Dar L'hssira, lunch at La Table Ocre - Restaurant Marocain, and dinner at Pepe Nero. I wonder what tomorrow will bring!
