Solo Adventure in the Enchanted Forests of Yakushima
Day 11: A Day of Cultural Immersion and Culinary Delights in Yakushima
Exploring Yakushima's cultural heart, from ancient shrines to local markets, and savoring the island's unique flavors.
Island Culture and Flavors
Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Yakushima, exploring its cultural roots and savoring the unique flavors the island has to offer. It's amazing how much you can discover when you take a day to slow down and appreciate the local scene. Greta would have loved wandering through the shops with me, she always had an eye for unique crafts.
The day started with a hearty breakfast at hiyoriya. This small, organic restaurant is known for its macrobiotic and vegan cuisine. It's a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away from the main road, and looks like a regular house. I managed to snag a table and enjoyed a delicious, healthy meal made with locally sourced ingredients. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. Since going freelance, I've made a conscious effort to eat healthier, and this place definitely aligned with that goal.

Next on the itinerary was the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. This center provides a great introduction to the island's ecology and history. The staff was very attentive and helpful, providing clear and well-organized information. The building itself is quite striking, and inside there's a small souvenir shop where I found a unique handmade bookmark. They also screen a panoramic movie about the island, which gave me a feel for how wild and unspoiled it is. It was a great way to learn more about Yakushima's environment, nature, geography, and local culture.

The best journeys are those that lead you to unexpected discoveries, both within yourself and in the world around you.
After immersing myself in the island's culture, it was time for lunch at Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. This market is a must-visit for food and souvenir enthusiasts. I decided to try the local specialty: flying fish. I opted for the Deep-Fried Flying Fish Combo, and it didn't disappoint. The fish was larger than I expected, with delightfully crunchy wings and a perfect salty flavor. The market also had a souvenir store where I picked up a few unique mementos.

With my curiosity piqued and my stomach satisfied, I headed to Yaku-jinja, also known as Yaku Shrine. This serene Shinto shrine is a sacred place of worship and is considered the guardian shrine of the islanders. The atmosphere was incredibly calm, and I bought a climbing charm in the shape of Yakushima as a keepsake. The shrine itself has a sense of history, with weathered statues and twisting trees. It's a place of peace and tranquility, offering a beautiful view of the mountains and ocean. I took a moment to reflect on my journey so far and felt a deep connection to the island's spiritual side.

After the shrine, I spent some time shopping at HONU yakushima. This shop offers handcrafted accessories with a Yakushima theme. The word Honu means turtle in Hawaiian, and turtles feature prominently in their products. I picked up a few small gifts for Greta and my family back home. It's always nice to find unique, locally made items that capture the essence of a place.

As evening approached, I made my way to Il Mare for dinner. This Italian restaurant offers a unique twist on classic dishes, using seafood sourced from the surrounding waters and local venison. I decided to try one of their pizzas, which had a lovely, fluffy crust. The chef is fluent in English, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a delightful culinary experience that blended the flavors of Italy with the spirit of Yakushima.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Yakushima's natural wonders, including the Sandaisugi Cedar and Daio Sugi [If I have time, I might check out Ambar, a local bar.]. I'm excited to continue my adventure and see what other hidden gems this island has in store.
This trip has been a wonderful opportunity for personal reflection and adventure, just as I had hoped. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel and explore new cultures. And even though Greta couldn't be here with me, I know she would have loved every minute of it.
The quiet moments at Yaku-jinja reminded me of our hikes in the Odenwald Forest back in Germany, a peaceful escape into nature that we both cherish. Maybe next time, I'll convince her to join me on a trek through Yakushima's ancient forests.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Yakushima has to offer beyond its famous cedar forests. The island's culture, cuisine, and spiritual atmosphere are just as captivating. It's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the local way of life and connect with nature on a deeper level.
As I headed back to my accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. From the serene atmosphere of Yaku-jinja to the delicious flavors of Il Mare, Yakushima had once again exceeded my expectations. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow would bring. Maybe I'll even find a hidden onsen to soak in after a long day of hiking. Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: Yakushima has captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what else it has in store.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow promises more exploration of Yakushima's natural wonders. I'm particularly excited to see the Sandaisugi Cedar and Daio Sugi, two more of the island's ancient giants. After a day of hiking, I might treat myself to a drink at Ambar, a local bar, to unwind and reflect on my adventures. It's all about balancing exploration with relaxation, and Yakushima seems to offer the perfect blend of both.
As I prepare for another day of discovery, I'm reminded of a quote from John Muir:
In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
And with that, I bid you goodnight from the enchanting island of Yakushima. Until tomorrow, happy travels!
