A Day of Discovery and Reflection

Today was a day of diving deeper into the heart of Yakushima, not through its famed forests alone, but through its cultural and spiritual essence. After several days of rigorous hiking, it felt right to slow down and absorb the island's history and traditions. I was excited to explore the Yakusugi Museum and Yahazudake Shrine, and maybe pick up a few mementos along the way.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi. The fresh, locally-sourced gelato was the perfect way to start the morning, offering unique flavors that captured the essence of Yakushima's natural bounty. It was a refreshing change from the usual breakfast fare, and everyone in our group enjoyed the sweet, creamy treat [me included!].

After breakfast, we headed to the Yakusugi Museum, a place I had been eagerly anticipating. As a community outreach coordinator focused on environmental sustainability, I was keen to learn more about the ancient Yakusugi cedar trees that define this island. The museum is located on the southwestern area of Yakushima Island.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the exhibits showcasing the immense scale and age of these trees. The museum thoughtfully displayed the history of logging on Yakushima, including the shift toward more sustainable practices after World War II.

I was particularly moved by the exhibit featuring a branch from the Jomon-sugi, a cedar estimated to be over 1,000 years old. Seeing such a tangible piece of this ancient giant, I was reminded of the importance of preserving these natural treasures for future generations. The museum also displayed tools used for felling cedar trees during the Edo period, including massive chainsaws. It was fascinating to see the evolution of these tools and the impact they had on the island's forests.

To truly appreciate a place, you must understand its past and respect its present.

The Yakusugi Museum did an excellent job of presenting the complex relationship between the islanders and the cedars. I learned about the cedar shingles, known as hiragi, which were used to pay local land taxes during the Edo Period. The museum also highlighted the efforts of Tomari Jochiku, a Buddhist priest who advocated for the exploitation of the forests. It was a comprehensive look at the history of Yakushima, and I left with a deeper understanding of the island's natural and cultural heritage.

After immersing ourselves in the history of Yakusugi, we drove to Yahazudake Shrine, a Shinto shrine nestled on the coast. The bright red torii gate stood out against the backdrop of the vast cave, creating a striking visual contrast. According to local beliefs, this cave is home to the gods of fishing and marriage. The shrine is located on Cape Yahazu in Isso, along the way to Isso Lighthouse.

As we approached the shrine, the tranquil atmosphere enveloped us. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore, combined with the gentle breeze, created a sense of peace and serenity. We climbed the stairs leading to the main hall, taking in the stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The shrine itself was small but beautifully maintained, with intricate carvings and vibrant colors. I took a moment to reflect on the spiritual significance of this place, offering a silent prayer for the well-being of my family and the preservation of Yakushima's natural beauty.

The Yahazudake Shrine is known for its picturesque location. The red torii gate frames the entrance to the cave, creating a stunning visual effect. The shrine is a popular spot for tourists seeking a blend of natural beauty and cultural significance. Some visitors have described the shrine as a hidden gem, offering a sense of adventure and tranquility.

After our visit to the shrine, we were ready for lunch. We stopped at Kamogawa Restaurant, known for its local cuisine and fresh seafood. I decided to try the local specialty, flying fish, prepared in a traditional style. The delicate flavor of the fish, combined with the savory sauce, was a culinary delight. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. It was the perfect place to refuel after a morning of exploration.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Pukaridō, a charming shop near the airport. I was looking for a unique souvenir to remind me of my time on Yakushima, and Pukaridō did not disappoint. The shop offered a wide selection of local crafts, including items made from Yakusugi wood. I was particularly drawn to the Sunao Yakushima accessories, which incorporated Yakusugi and natural stone.

I ended up purchasing a beautiful bracelet made from Yakusugi beads. The rich, earthy scent of the wood reminded me of the ancient forests we had explored. It was the perfect memento to take home, a tangible reminder of the island's natural beauty and cultural heritage. Pukarido is located approximately 5 minutes by foot from Yakushima airport. The shop sells numerous foods, sweets, and Yakusugi handicrafts.

As the day drew to a close, we gathered for dinner at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. This restaurant is known for its traditional set menus and local dishes made with ingredients from Yakushima. The restaurant offers a Yakushima flying fish set menu, which is both delicious and visually appealing. The space allows you to see, taste, and feel Yakushima.

The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, with artwork adorning the walls. We savored each dish, appreciating the flavors and textures of the local ingredients. It was a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion and exploration. As we ate, we reminisced about our adventures, sharing stories and laughter. It was moments like these that made our trip so special, creating lasting memories that we would cherish for years to come.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to tackle Mt. Miyanoura, the highest peak on Yakushima. I'm a little nervous about the climb, but also excited to see the island from a different perspective. We'll also visit the Sunset Hill Observation Deck, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sun setting over the East China Sea. And of course, we'll be trying out more of Yakushima's culinary delights, with dinner planned at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter [a restaurant with a great name!].

As I reflect on today, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience Yakushima's cultural and spiritual side. From the ancient cedars to the serene shrines, this island has a unique charm that captivates the soul. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, knowing that each day on Yakushima is a gift to be treasured. The island has a timeless escapade, deep in Japanese culture and nature.
