Today was a day of exploration that took us from the depths of ancient history to the serene shores of Paros, all while savoring the delightful flavors of Greek cuisine. It’s amazing how much this island has to offer, blending cultural heritage with natural beauty. I felt a deep connection to the past as we wandered through the marble quarries, and the relaxation at the beach was the perfect way to unwind.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at STOU FRED in Parikia. Fred's place is more than just a restaurant; it's a gastronomical experience. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the staff made us feel right at home. I opted for the French cuisine, and it was delicious. David enjoyed a classic Greek breakfast, while Jasmine tried a bit of both, showcasing the fusion of flavors that Fred is known for. Journey Through Time: The Ancient Marble Quarries

The ancient marble quarries were an absolute highlight. It’s surreal to walk through the same tunnels where ancient miners toiled, extracting the world-renowned Parian marble. As we descended into the earth, the temperature dropped noticeably, and the air grew heavy with the weight of history. I could almost hear the echoes of chisels and hammers from centuries ago.

The quarries are located near the village of Marathi and have been in operation since the Early Cycladic period, around 3200 BC. The most famous are the underground quarries of the Nymphs and Pan, which produced the incredibly pure lychnites marble. This marble was favored by Greek sculptors for its transparency and fine consistency. It was incredible to think that masterpieces like the Venus de Milo and the Hermes of Praxiteles were crafted from this very stone.

Jasmine was fascinated by the stories of the miners, who were often slaves, and the conditions they endured. David, ever the engineer, was impressed by the ingenuity of the ancient quarrying techniques. We explored the underground galleries, marveling at the intricate network of tunnels and chambers. The air was cool and damp, and the silence was broken only by the occasional drip of water.

After our historical adventure, we were ready for some relaxation. We drove to Agios Fokas, a serene beach located near Parikia Bay. The drive itself was picturesque, with stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the rolling hills of Paros.

Agios Fokas is a small, non-organized beach, which meant it was relatively quiet and peaceful. The beach is named after a quaint whitewashed church that stands proudly at the north entrance of the bay. The church is a classic example of Cycladic architecture, with its bright blue dome and simple, elegant design.

We spent the afternoon swimming in the crystal-clear waters and lounging on the sandy shore. The water was so clear that we could see the colorful fish darting among the rocks. Jasmine enjoyed snorkeling, while David and I simply soaked up the sun. I made sure to reapply sunscreen, learning from my mistake of forgetting it on day one! We also realized we forgot beach towels, but luckily, we managed with the ones from the hotel.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape, we took a stroll along the beach. The air was filled with the scent of salt and pine, and the sound of the waves lapping against the shore was incredibly soothing. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

Before leaving Agios Fokas, we visited the charming church. It was a peaceful sanctuary, and we lit a candle to honor the island’s rich cultural heritage. The views from the church were breathtaking, overlooking the bay and the nearby beaches of Marcello and Krios.

With appetites whetted by the sea air, we headed to La Bottega for dinner. This Italian restaurant in Parikia is known for its wonderful cuisine and energetic atmosphere. We arrived early to snag a table with a view of the town.

We started with some delicious appetizers, including ravioli and focaccia. For the main course, David opted for pizza, while Jasmine and I shared a pasta dish. The food was excellent, and the service was fast and friendly. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day’s adventures. From the ancient marble quarries to the tranquil beach and the delicious dinner, it had been a day of discovery and relaxation. Paros has a way of captivating the senses and leaving a lasting impression.

After dinner, we decided to check out Sante Cocktail Bar in Naousa. The bar is nestled in the traditional alleyways and has a great vibe. Jasmine enjoyed a refreshing watermelon pool cocktail, while David and I savored passion caramel martinis. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and it was the perfect way to end our day.

Tomorrow's Adventures

Tomorrow, we’re planning to explore the northern part of the island. Our itinerary includes visits to the Monastery of St. John's of Deti, Agios Spyridonas Beach, and Monastery Logovarda. I’m particularly excited about visiting the monasteries, as I always find a sense of peace and history in these places. We'll also stop by Pragmata Concept Store for some local finds.

As I write this, I’m filled with gratitude for the experiences of today and anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. Paros has a way of weaving its magic, and I’m eager to see what other treasures it holds.

A Final Thought

Today was a reminder that travel is about more than just seeing new places. It’s about connecting with the past, embracing the present, and savoring the simple joys of life. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow will bring even more adventures. The fig tree, which we didn't get to visit today, will have to wait for another trip.
