A Day of Discovery in Paros

Today was a fascinating blend of history and beauty here in Paros. It’s amazing how much this island has to offer beyond its stunning beaches. I'm excited to share my experiences exploring ancient ruins, charming villages, and of course, indulging in some delicious Greek cuisine with my family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at BuonVento in Marpissa. The restaurant had a serene location with ample sea view. The Italian hosts match with success the south-Italian cuisine with the products of the Parian land creating dishes that are the fruit of the encounter of two Mediterranean cultures that have a lot to share. I opted for a classic omelette with fresh herbs, while David enjoyed a traditional Italian breakfast. Jasmine, of course, went straight for the Nutella pancakes. It's become a bit of a tradition on our travels for her to sample the local version of her favorite breakfast treat. Fueled up and ready to go, we set off to explore the historical side of Paros.

Our first stop was the Ancient Cemetery, located near the port of Parikia. This site dates back to the 8th century BC and was in use until the 3rd century AD. It’s incredible to walk through a place where so much history has unfolded. The archeological evidence shows that the cemetery was in use from the 8th century BC until the 3rd century AD. Walls divided the cemetery and the ancient town. Excavations have revealed various tombs and a mass grave, offering a glimpse into the burial practices of the time. Walking around the grounds, I couldn't help but reflect on the lives of those buried here so long ago. It's humbling to stand in a place with such a deep connection to the past. Jasmine, surprisingly, was quite intrigued by the sarcophagi and the stories behind them.

Visiting the Ancient Cemetery was a profound reminder that every place has a story etched in its stones, waiting to be discovered.

Next on our itinerary was the Venetian Castle in Parikia. This fortress was built in the 13th century, utilizing marble from ancient temples. It served as a crucial defense against pirates and enemy attacks. The views from the castle were breathtaking, offering a clear panorama of the Aegean Sea. It’s a bit of a climb to get to the top, but the effort is well worth it for the stunning vistas and the chance to explore this historical landmark. The castle is near charming bars and fish taverns, replacing Venetian storehouses that were once present. David, always the history buff, was fascinated by the architecture and the strategic importance of the castle.

After immersing ourselves in history, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Galazia Hytra, where we had a delightful meal. This restaurant is known for its unique Cycladic flavors and modern dishes. The restaurant is located inside the five-star resort, Galazia Hytra is considered ideal for dinner with a view to Piso Livadi and the endless Aegean sea. Inspired by the Michelin-starred restaurant “Hytra” in Athens and promises an array of flavors and ingredients from the Cyclades. I savored a fresh seafood dish, while David opted for a traditional Greek salad. Jasmine, ever adventurous, tried the moussaka and declared it a new favorite. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring.

With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to the House with Flowers and Sea View. This spot is exactly as it sounds—a charming house adorned with vibrant blooms, overlooking the sparkling Aegean Sea. The meticulously maintained gardens were a delight to wander through, and the sea view was simply mesmerizing. It was the perfect spot for some family photos, capturing the beauty of Paros in full bloom. Jasmine, with her keen eye for photography, took some stunning shots of the flowers against the backdrop of the sea.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Pirate Bar in Parikia. Tucked away in the narrow cobblestone streets, this bar is known for playing jazz, blues, and classical music. Sipping on refreshing cocktails, we enjoyed the lounge ambiance and reflected on our day of exploration. The bar plays the best jazz, blues and classical music on the island, and offers a wonderful lounge ambiance for an evening full of great music, great drinks and great company. It was the perfect way to relax and soak in the atmosphere of Paros. I even chatted with a waitress who, like many young Greeks, was working in the tourism industry despite having a degree in psychology. It’s a reminder that while Paros is a beautiful place to visit, it also faces economic challenges for its residents.

For dinner, we chose Greco Paros Traditional Greek Taverna. This taverna is a beloved gathering place where locals and visitors come together to enjoy the flavors of Greece. We indulged in traditional dishes like souvlaki, moussaka, and calamari. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. The food was delicious, and the sunset view was the perfect backdrop to our meal. Jasmine devoured a tasty greek gyro, and Laura Currie said that she loved the zucchini balls/fritters.

As I sit here writing this, I’m filled with gratitude for the experiences we had today. Paros has a way of captivating you with its blend of history, beauty, and charm. Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit the Cycladic Idol, Moraitis Estate, and the Mesovounia Nature Reserve & Sanctuary. I’m excited to see what new adventures await us.

Before heading back to the Argonauta Hotel, we made a quick stop at a local bakery for some traditional Greek pastries. It’s these little moments, shared with my family, that make these trips so special. I’m also hoping to get a chance to do some Gombey dancing while we're here. I participate in a troupe back in Toronto, and it would be amazing to connect with some local dancers if possible.
