A Day of Discovery in Kyoto

Today was all about embracing the unexpected in Kyoto. I set out with a plan, but as always, the city had its own agenda, leading me down paths filled with cinematic wonder, historical intrigue, and a touch of railway nostalgia. It's these detours that often make travel so rewarding, offering glimpses into the soul of a place that you wouldn't find on a map.

My day began with a hearty traditional Japanese breakfast at Komefuku. The restaurant was cozy, and the aroma of freshly cooked rice filled the air. I opted for a set meal that included grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of *tsukemono* (Japanese pickles). It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the simple yet profound flavors that Japanese cuisine offers. The warmth of the miso soup was especially comforting, chasing away the morning chill and preparing me for the adventures that lay ahead.

First stop: Toei Kyoto Studio Park. I've always been fascinated by the world of cinema, and this place promised a unique peek behind the scenes of Japanese period dramas. The park is an active film studio combined with an amusement park, a delightful blend of entertainment and education. Walking through the meticulously recreated Edo-era streets, I felt like I had stepped back in time. Samurai roamed the sets, geishas gracefully glided by, and ninjas lurked in the shadows. I even caught a glimpse of a real film crew in action, adding to the surreal atmosphere.

I decided to try my hand at being a ninja, navigating the Ninja Mystery House. It was a maze of hidden passages, secret doors, and disorienting tricks. Though I wouldn't say I'm ready to join the ranks of the legendary ninja clans, it was a fun and challenging experience. I also watched a live ninja show, complete with impressive acrobatics, sword fights, and plenty of cheesy humor. It was pure entertainment, and I couldn't help but grin at the over-the-top performance.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.

Next, I immersed myself in the world of trains at the Kyoto Railway Museum. As someone who appreciates the blend of history and engineering, I was excited to see the impressive collection of locomotives and railway cars. The museum is a testament to Japan's rich railway heritage, showcasing everything from steam engines to sleek Shinkansen bullet trains. I spent hours wandering through the exhibits, marveling at the craftsmanship and innovation that went into these machines. I even got to climb aboard a few of the trains, imagining what it must have been like to travel across Japan in a bygone era.

One of the highlights was the massive railway diorama, a sprawling miniature world complete with working trains, bustling cities, and scenic landscapes. It was mesmerizing to watch the tiny trains chugging along the tracks, navigating the intricate network of tunnels and bridges. I also enjoyed the interactive exhibits, where I got to try my hand at driving a train simulator and operating a railway switch. It gave me a newfound appreciation for the skill and precision required to keep Japan's trains running smoothly.

From there, I traveled to Nijō Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the shoguns. Built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period, the castle served as his Kyoto residence and a symbol of his power. The castle is divided into three main areas: the Honmaru (main circle of defense), the Ninomaru (secondary circle of defense), and the gardens that surround them. I began my exploration at the Ninomaru Palace, the main attraction of the castle. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the grandeur and elegance of the palace's architecture. The palace consists of multiple interconnected buildings, each adorned with tatami mat floors, intricately painted ceilings, and exquisitely decorated sliding doors. The famous nightingale floors squeaked beneath my feet, a clever security measure designed to alert the shogun to any intruders.

I wandered through the various waiting and audience rooms, imagining the elaborate ceremonies and political intrigues that once took place within these walls. The tour route led me to the main audience room, where the shogun would sit on an elevated platform, flanked by bodyguards hidden behind doors. Only the highest-ranking visitors were granted access to this inner sanctum, a testament to the rigid social hierarchy of the Edo period. After the palace, I strolled through the Ninomaru Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden with a large pond, ornamental stones, and meticulously manicured pine trees. The garden was designed to create a sense of harmony and tranquility, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

As evening approached, I sought a culinary adventure at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura for lunch. Opting for the Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option was a great choice, since I wanted to have a little bit of everything. Each dish was a testament to the chef's skill and the region's culinary heritage. The restaurant itself exuded a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.

For dinner, I decided to indulge in a teppanyaki experience at Teppanyaki Minami. The chef's skillful performance, combined with the exquisite flavors of the food, made for an unforgettable meal. It was a delightful way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.

Finally, as the day wound down, I decided to check out L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its creative cocktails and magical atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The bartender, a true mixologist, crafted a bespoke drink tailored to my tastes. As I sipped my cocktail, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Kyoto.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates, visit the Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum, and explore the serene Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO, a store that showcases local crafts and design. It sounds like another day of exploration and discovery.

Kyoto continues to surprise and enchant me. As I walked back to The Hiramatsu Kyoto, I thought about how each day here feels like peeling back another layer of this fascinating city. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

And I really need to find an adapter. My phone is almost dead, and I need to capture all these wonderful experiences!

“To travel is to live.” Perhaps Hans Christian Andersen was right – every journey is a chance to truly live, to discover not only the world around us but also the depths within ourselves. And with that thought, I bid you goodnight from Kyoto.
