Kyoto's Tapestry of Tradition and Taste

Today was a day of contrasts, from the vibrant red of a thousand torii gates to the hushed reverence of an imperial palace, all interwoven with the golden thread of sake. It’s amazing how each day here unveils a new facet of Kyoto, deepening my appreciation for this city's ability to honor its past while embracing the present.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Kakyo. I opted for their traditional Japanese set, a beautiful arrangement of grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly seasoned vegetables. It was the perfect start to a day promising a blend of spiritual and historical exploration. The delicate flavors and mindful presentation set a tone of serene anticipation for the adventures that lay ahead.

Ascending the Vermilion Path: Fushimi Inari Shrine

The first stop was Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up the mountainside. As I approached the shrine, the energy was palpable, a mix of reverence and excitement from the throngs of visitors eager to experience this iconic landmark. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of incense and the faint echo of prayers.

The climb was both a physical and spiritual journey. Each gate, donated by businesses seeking prosperity, seemed to pulse with a silent energy. Sunlight filtered through the gaps, casting a warm, ethereal glow on the path ahead. I took my time, pausing to admire the intricate carvings on the gates and the small fox statues – Inari's messengers – that guarded the way.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and the ascent of Mount Inari reminds us that every step, every prayer, adds to the richness of the experience.

It was a Saturday, and the path was bustling with locals and tourists alike. Despite the crowds, there was a sense of shared purpose, a collective desire to connect with something larger than ourselves. I even saw a few people dressed in traditional kimonos, adding to the timeless atmosphere of the place. I made it about halfway up before deciding to turn back, knowing that the full ascent would take a couple of hours. The panoramic views of Kyoto from that vantage point were breathtaking, a reminder of the city’s beauty nestled amidst the mountains.

A Toast to Tradition: Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum

After the invigorating climb, I headed to the Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum in the Fushimi district, one of Japan's premier sake-producing regions. The museum, housed in a beautifully preserved brewery, offered a fascinating glimpse into the history and craftsmanship of sake making. As someone who appreciates the nuances of different cultures, I found the process of sake brewing to be incredibly intricate and steeped in tradition. The museum showcased the tools and techniques used for centuries, highlighting the dedication and skill of the brewers.

I learned that Fushimi's famed water, sourced from underground springs, plays a crucial role in the sake's smooth, light taste. The moderately hard water, rich in minerals, allows for a slow fermentation process, resulting in sake with a unique balance of umami and sweetness. The highlight of the visit was, of course, the sake tasting. I sampled three different varieties, each with its distinct aroma and flavor profile. It was a delightful sensory experience, and I gained a newfound appreciation for the art of sake.

Imperial Grandeur: Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace

In the afternoon, I visited the Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace, a serene oasis of meticulously manicured gardens and historic architecture. Originally built as a retirement residence for Emperor Gomizuno in the 17th century, the palace exudes an air of understated elegance and tranquility.

The tour, led by a knowledgeable guide, took us through the palace grounds, showcasing the stunning gardens with their picturesque ponds, artfully arranged stones, and meticulously pruned trees. I was particularly impressed by the Kogosho, a small, elegant structure that served as the emperor's private study. The simple yet refined design reflected a deep appreciation for nature and harmony.

As I strolled through the gardens, I couldn't help but reflect on the weight of history that permeated the air. This was where emperors had once walked, made decisions that shaped the nation, and found solace in the beauty of their surroundings. It was a humbling experience to be in such a place, to feel connected to the past in a tangible way.

A Touch of Modern Design: D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO

Before dinner, I decided to explore D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO, a unique shop located within the grounds of a Buddhist temple. This design store focuses on “long-life design,” showcasing well-made, durable products from local artisans and manufacturers. It was a refreshing contrast to the traditional crafts I had seen earlier in the day, offering a glimpse into Kyoto's contemporary design scene. I found myself drawn to the simple, functional beauty of the items on display, from sturdy tea mugs to handcrafted wooden utensils. It was a great place to find tasteful souvenirs that reflected Kyoto's blend of tradition and innovation. I ended up buying a beautiful ceramic tea set, a perfect reminder of my time here.

Culinary Delights: A Kaiseki Dinner at Sakuragawa

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Sakuragawa, a restaurant known for its exquisite kaiseki cuisine. Kaiseki is a traditional Japanese multi-course meal characterized by its seasonal ingredients, meticulous presentation, and emphasis on balance and harmony. Sakuragawa lived up to its reputation, offering a culinary experience that was both visually stunning and incredibly delicious.

Each course was a work of art, showcasing the freshest ingredients and the chef's mastery of technique. From the delicate sashimi to the savory grilled fish and the fragrant rice dish, every bite was a revelation of flavor and texture. The service was impeccable, with the staff explaining each dish in detail and ensuring that I felt completely comfortable and taken care of.

The atmosphere was serene and intimate, with soft lighting and traditional Japanese décor. It was the perfect setting to savor the exquisite cuisine and reflect on the day's experiences. As I finished my meal, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's culinary artistry.

Tomorrow's Journey: Imperial Villas and Serene Gardens

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of Kyoto's hidden gems. My itinerary includes a visit to the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, another stunning example of imperial landscape architecture, followed by a stroll through the Murinan Garden, known for its innovative design and serene atmosphere. I also plan to visit Shimogamo Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest and most important Shinto shrines. And, of course, I'll be sure to sample some more of Kyoto's culinary delights, with dinner planned at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. I might even check out Bar Dram for a nightcap.

As I settle in for the night at The Hiramatsu Kyoto, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, of leaving you with a feeling of wonder and appreciation for the beauty and richness of Japanese culture. I am so glad I decided to take this solo journey.
