Whispers of the Sahara

As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, I find myself reflecting on a day that has been nothing short of magical. Today was a deep dive into the heart of the Sahara, a journey that touched my soul and ignited a sense of wonder I haven't felt in years. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the familiar comforts of Toronto for the unpredictable allure of the open road.

My day began with breakfast at Café Restaurant Les Amis. I was looking forward to a hearty Berber omelette, but sadly discovered the restaurant is permanently closed. I grabbed a quick bite at my accommodation, eager to start the day's adventures. The promise of the Sahara was too strong to resist. I had a quick coffee and some pastries to fuel my morning.

First on the agenda was the Bivouac Merzouga Experience. I was excited to immerse myself in the nomadic Berber culture. The drive to the camp was mesmerizing. The landscape transformed into a sea of sand, with towering dunes stretching as far as the eye could see. It felt like stepping into another world, a world where time stood still and the only sounds were the whispers of the wind.
Upon arriving at the bivouac, I was greeted with traditional Berber hospitality—a warm welcome, mint tea, and an invitation to relax and soak in the surroundings. The camp itself was a collection of traditional tents, each adorned with colorful rugs and cushions. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me as I sat there, sipping tea and gazing at the endless expanse of the Sahara.

The desert is a vast and silent teacher, offering lessons in resilience, adaptation, and the beauty of simplicity.

I spent the afternoon exploring the Sahara Desert. I couldn't resist a visit to Fossiles Mineraux Merzouga, a local shop known for its fascinating collection of desert artifacts. I'm always on the lookout for unique souvenirs that tell a story, and this place was a treasure trove. I picked up a few small fossils, each one a tiny piece of the Sahara's ancient history. They'll be perfect reminders of this incredible journey. I bartered with the shop owner for a while, a little bit of fun and a great way to connect with the local culture.

For lunch, I stopped at Cafe Snack Restaurant Said. It was an excellent choice. I savored a flavorful vegetable tagine, said to be unrivaled in the Sahara. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the staff were very welcoming. It was the perfect place to recharge before continuing my desert exploration. I was able to try the local favorite, grilled lamb skewers.

The afternoon was dedicated to simply wandering and taking in the majestic Sahara Desert. I walked barefoot on the dunes, feeling the warm sand between my toes. I watched as the wind sculpted the landscape, creating ever-changing patterns and shapes. It was a truly meditative experience, one that allowed me to connect with nature on a profound level.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Cafe Restaurant Itran for dinner. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan meal while sitting on their cozy terrace. The service was terrific and the atmosphere was cozy. It was the perfect setting to reflect on the day's adventures and prepare for the night ahead. The food was tasty, especially the tagine and couscous.

The evening culminated in a magical experience under the stars. The Berber staff at the bivouac set up a campfire, and we all gathered around to share stories and listen to traditional music. The sky was ablaze with stars, more than I have ever seen in my life. It felt like I could reach out and touch them. I learned about the constellations from a Berber guide, who shared ancient tales and legends. It was a truly unforgettable moment, one that I will cherish forever.

I am really looking forward to experiencing Ali & Sara's Desert Palace and the Merzouga Dunes tomorrow. I plan to start my day with breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Chez Youssef, followed by lunch at Cafe Restaurant Zahra and dinner at Restaurant & Cafe Zaid Merzouga. I will also check out Riad Tighmart Merzouga, a local bar.

As I lay in my tent tonight, listening to the gentle sounds of the desert, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. This solo journey into the Sahara has been everything I hoped for and more. It has challenged me, inspired me, and opened my heart to the beauty and wonder of the world. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a note in my journal: I must remember to buy a portable power bank when I get back to Toronto. My camera almost ran out of battery today, and I wouldn't want to miss capturing any more of these precious moments.

It’s experiences like these that make me feel so grateful for the life I’ve built. Leaving Bermuda as a young woman, marrying David, and building a life in Toronto has given me so much. But it’s these solo adventures that really allow me to connect with myself and the world around me. Perhaps Jasmine will join me on one of these trips someday soon!
