A Day Amongst the Dunes
Today was all about embracing the raw beauty and hidden treasures of the Merzouga region. From the thrill of a Sahara Safari adventure to the fascinating finds in a local fossil shop, it was a day filled with adventure and cultural immersion. It's days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo journey in the first place – to discover the unexpected and connect with the world around me.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Resturant Nora. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Moroccan coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for the adventures that lay ahead. I fueled up with a traditional Berber omelet, savoring the rich flavors and spices that are so characteristic of Moroccan cuisine. It was a simple yet satisfying start, and I felt ready to take on whatever the day had in store. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere made it a truly pleasant experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

With breakfast done, it was time for my Sahara Safari Adventure. I had booked a tour that promised to take me deep into the Erg Chebbi dunes, and I was eager to witness the desert landscape up close. The guide picked me up in a sturdy 4x4, and we set off into the sandy expanse. As we drove further and further away from civilization, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The dunes loomed large in the distance, their golden peaks shimmering in the morning sun.

The safari was an exhilarating experience. We traversed the dunes, the vehicle skillfully navigating the ever-shifting sands. I was struck by the sheer scale and beauty of the desert. It was a landscape of endless horizons and undulating waves of sand, a place where time seemed to stand still. We stopped at various viewpoints, each offering a unique perspective on the surrounding scenery. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place.
One of the highlights of the safari was visiting a traditional Berber camp. I had the opportunity to learn about the nomadic way of life, sipping mint tea with the locals and listening to their stories. It was a humbling experience to witness their resilience and adaptability in such a harsh environment. They shared their knowledge of the desert, pointing out medicinal plants and explaining the importance of preserving their cultural heritage. I felt a deep connection with these people, and I was grateful for their hospitality.
After the safari, lunch was at Sky restaurant. The reviews I had read mentioned its unique location amidst the Erg Chebbi dunes, blending the serenity of the Sahara with culinary excellence. The restaurant offered panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, providing a stunning backdrop for my meal. I savored a delicious tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, while soaking in the beauty of the desert.

Sometimes, the most unexpected detours lead to the greatest discoveries.
In the afternoon, I visited DRISS FOSSILS AND MINERLAS SHOP. I've always been fascinated by geology, and I was excited to see what treasures this shop held. The shop was a veritable museum of fossils and minerals, with specimens from all over the region. I spent hours browsing the displays, marveling at the intricate patterns and ancient origins of these natural wonders.

Driss, the shop owner, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his collection. He shared stories about the discovery of each fossil, explaining the geological history of the area. I learned about the ancient seas that once covered the Sahara, and the creatures that inhabited them. It was like taking a step back in time, connecting with the deep history of this land.
I ended up purchasing a few small fossils as souvenirs, tangible reminders of my time in Merzouga. Each piece held a unique story, a testament to the power of nature and the passage of time. I left the shop feeling inspired and enriched, my mind buzzing with new knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the world around me.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Kasr Diafa Restaurant & Snack & Cafe for dinner. This spot was recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. I wasn't disappointed. The aroma of grilled meats and spices filled the air, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. I ordered a mixed grill, savoring the flavors of lamb, chicken, and beef, all cooked to perfection.

I felt a sense of connection with these people, and I was grateful for their hospitality. As I finished my meal, I watched the sunset over the Sahara, the sky ablaze with vibrant colors. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Reflecting on the day, I'm reminded of how much this journey has enriched my life. I've learned so much about the culture and history of this region, and I've connected with people from all walks of life. The Sahara is a place of stark beauty and profound spirituality, and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to experience it.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Tiziri Camp - Luxury ECO Desert Camp Merzouga and experience Merzouga 4x4. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me in this magical place. I'm also planning to grab breakfast at CAFE RESTAURANT TENERE, lunch at Snack chez Toufik, and dinner at Restaurant Cafe SaharaTime. And maybe, if I'm feeling adventurous, I'll check out Bar TABAA for a nightcap.
This solo journey has been transformative, allowing me to reflect on my life back in Toronto, my work with environmental sustainability, and my family – David and Jasmine. I miss them dearly, but I know that this experience will make me a better person, more grounded and appreciative of the world around me. I can't wait to share my stories with them when I return, and hopefully inspire them to embark on their own adventures.
As I prepare for my final day in the Sahara, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. This journey has been a dream come true, and I know that the memories I've made here will stay with me forever. The beauty of the desert, the warmth of the people, and the thrill of discovery – these are the things that make life worth living. And I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to experience them all.
