Day 7: Delving Deep and Soaring High: Cappadocia's Hidden Gems and Sunset Spectacles
Uncover Cappadocia's secrets: Explore ancient underground cities, witness breathtaking sunsets, and savor Turkish delights on this journey.
Underground Wonders and Fiery Sunsets
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey from the depths of ancient civilizations to the heights of Cappadocia's stunning vistas. Anjali and I ventured into the heart of this magical region, exploring its historical wonders and natural beauty, creating memories that I know we will cherish forever. It was a day of discovery, delicious food, and breathtaking views, a true feast for the senses.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Volcanic Cave, a local spot known for its traditional Turkish breakfast spread. Fuelled up for the day, we set off to explore the Özkonak Underground City. It's fascinating to think that this subterranean city, accidentally discovered in 1972, dates back to 400 B.C. and could house up to 60,000 people for months. As someone who grew up in the mountainous terrain of Gorkha, Nepal, I've always been drawn to the idea of hidden places and resourceful communities. It was used to store food, protect livestock, and shelter people from enemies.

Navigating the narrow passageways and imagining life in this underground world was an experience that transported us back in time. The intricate network of tunnels, living spaces, and storage areas was a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people who once called this place home. It was a bit claustrophobic at times, but the sheer scale of the city and the stories it held kept us captivated. The residues of parsley, fennel, and rock salt were found, leading researchers to believe that the city had spice containers for food preparation.
Emerging from the depths, we surfaced into the bright Cappadocia sunshine and made our way to Açık Saray Müzesi. This open-air museum, also known as the Open Palace, is a sprawling complex of rock-cut churches, monasteries, and living spaces dating back to the Byzantine era. As we wandered through the ruins, we were struck by the beauty and artistry of the frescoes that adorned the walls of the churches. These ancient paintings, depicting scenes from the Bible and the lives of the saints, were a testament to the deep faith and artistic talent of the people who created them. The museum was built around 1000 A.D. and features unique geological structures. The site was used by Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros Phokas' soldiers and includes dining halls, personal rooms, and monasteries.

The beauty of Cappadocia lies not just in its landscapes, but in the stories etched into its rocks and the flavors that dance on your palate.
For lunch, we stopped at Retro Cappadocia Restaurant Local Food, a charming spot known for its home-style Turkish dishes and stunning views of Cappadocia. The restaurant is family-run, with the grandmother doing the cooking and the rest of the family handling the service. I opted for the testi kebab, a traditional dish of meat and vegetables cooked in a sealed clay pot. The waiter dramatically cracked open the pot at our table, releasing a fragrant steam that filled the air. The kebab was delicious, the meat tender and flavorful, and the vegetables perfectly cooked. Anjali chose a meze plate with many vegetarian options. The terrace provided amazing views of the sunset.

After lunch, we indulged in a bit of shopping at Hattusa Handmade Ceramics, a local shop known for its beautiful and authentic handcrafted pottery. As someone who appreciates traditional crafts, I was immediately drawn to the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the ceramics. The owner, Turan, is a kind and talented artist who has been practicing his craft for 35 years. I purchased a few small bowls and plates, each one a unique piece of art that will remind me of our time in Cappadocia. It is a family-owned business with traditional Hittite art.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Red Valley Park, one of the most popular spots in Cappadocia for watching the sunset. As we arrived, the sky was already beginning to turn shades of orange and pink, casting a warm glow over the valley's unique rock formations. We found a spot on a ridge overlooking the valley and settled in to watch the spectacle unfold. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the valley was bathed in a fiery red light, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. The silence was broken only by the occasional whisper of the wind and the soft murmur of other onlookers, all of us united in our appreciation of this natural wonder. There are vendors selling wine and juice at the top.

For dinner, we chose Seki Restaurant & Lounge, a restaurant that focuses on sustainability and uses fresh, organic ingredients from the hotel's garden. The views from the outdoor terrace were amazing. I chose the Testi Kebab, a local favorite. Anjali enjoyed the Yarma soup with barley.
